Last Friday the truck, camper, everything I own, (except phone), and all that was precious to me burned beyond recognition. I was not inside but Sierra was. Thankfully I was camping with friends who have taken me in surrounded by love while I wait for the insurance company.
No idea what started the fire. This is what remains. Having dealt with the Yarnell fire I know that digging in this mess is futile. Though I did mask up and put on gloves to stir a bit and found a few well scaled sterling silver bracelets.
Thankfully I was and am surrounded by a wonderful group of nomad friends who embraced and took me in.
Waited over the weekend for Geico’s fire specialist. Hard to believe this big company doesn’t have people working weekends. Now it’s a waiting game.
Wednesday I moved along with the caravan to another camp. I’m safe and happy. Only took me 69 years to find my tribe.
Posting this from my phone is difficult. Could be a while before I collect from the claim and replace the laptop, camera, camper and everything else.

Thanks for following my journey.
Oh Gaelyn I am so very sorry for all of your loss. It brings tears to my eyes for you and poor little Sierra. How painful to the heart. I am glad to hear you are in the company of good friends though to help see you through this. Hoping insurance will get on it right away and get you some relief at least monetarily. Best wishes and hugs to you.
Oh no! So tragic. But your attitude is wonderful. Sending love and healing to you.
Oh no, I exclaimed reading this. Just so sudden, as you know it is, but wishing it wasn’t again. I am so sorry Gaelynfriend for your loss. Your friends-fam stepped in I’m so glad and you have so many out here thinking of you during this freakin’ time. I’m so thankful you are ok, breathing. Poor Sierra, may she rest in peace. Keep us posted as you’re able, but mostly take good self-care. A time for receiving what others will give. Sending you a hug right…..now.
I’m in shock so very sorry to hear this horrible news. Glad you have good friends to help right now. Big gentle hug
I saw the title and hoped this wasn’t the case, and I am so very sorry that it was. I am so sad for your loss. Sierra was a great travel companion and a dear friend. What a heartbreak — words cannot even express… sending you a big hug and love from CO.
Oh honey! I cried for you & your kitty and was in horror at the pictures. Prayers for you as you navigate your loss.
I sent you an email
I am so sorry to hear such sad news. I can’t even imagine how you must be feeling. Losing Sierra also must be so heartbreaking. My thoughts are with you.
So sorry for you. I’m at a loss for words. Doris from Pa
Oh this just sucks mightily. And losing Sierra as well. My prayers are with you.
As an experienced camper and park ranger, this is proof it could happen to any of us. Glad you have friends there, so often you are alone and become one with your surroundings.
Hope your insurance settlement is quick and plans are made to travel soon.
Sorry to read about your camper burning up Gaelyn and losing Sierra as well.
That is terrible. I feel so sorry for your loss that I don’t know what else to say.
I am hoping that since I am back home and using the laptop, maybe this time the comment will show up. Although what I wrote a few days ago when you first posted this blog may me a bit less relevant than it was then. Who knows. Either way, I am so saddened by your loss, one that seems just a bit too much for one lifetime. Twice burned? Crazy. And Sierra. Words fail here. Even though you have found your tribe, your kitty can’t be replaced. Only the though of her being with Berta is a bit of comfort. Having been following you along on Facebook I see you are traveling with friends. Not sure if they are old friends or new friends, but no matter, they have taken you in and are providing comfort and care when you need it most. I hope things get settled in a good way for you. Although some of the “stuff” that you told me about that you were carrying all tucked away in the camper can never be replaced. That is sad. It just isn’t fair at all. I hope you can get back to Skull Valley, get a new truck without some of the issues of the old one, get a new computer, and please please please I do hope that all those magnificent photos were stored in a cloud somewhere and not on all those externals that you talked about having in your rig. So many questions, but you are safe, and you sound well, unbelieveably so, so well that I am not sure I really believe you. LOL. As if maybe you are putting on a brave front. Kudos to you if that is the case and kudos as well if you are really doing well. Hugs to you, Gaelyn. IF this one doesn’t post I am screwed because once again, I am sure I won’t be able to repeat it.
Cant find the link to your Pay Pal account. Can you post again.
Sue’s comment says it all. My heart just breaks for you and for Sierra. Keep us posted on your recovery.
I only lost my car and all the towing mechanism and kayak set up but the cost to me is so much too much financially and personally. The insurance of the woman who hit me is giving me nearly nothing toward any of what I need to put me back in the same situation I was seconds before she plowed in to me. Not to mention the work on my part to handle all of this.
I can’t imagine how many times worse your situation is but I have tons of empathy.
Just read your email about this devastating situation and Sierra, how awful for her… and you. Sierra is plural so maybe one of her other 9-lives will show up rubbing up against your leg.
The road and adventures still beckon and soon again you will hit the adventure trail.
One foot in front of the other…A
Most EV’s burn up due to propane gas line issues due to the stress of dynamic structure motion and vibrations from road and off-road travel. I always turned off my gas before travel and when leaving the unit. After travel I inspect the lines and connections with a flashlight and stethoscope, and inspection camera, the kind used to inspect engine cylinders and are now quite inexpensive @ Harbor Freight.
In my last EV build, I eliminated in-house propane and used and Induction plate and an air-fryer and electric pot with a mini-split for heat and air a Marine wood stove for heat.
It could have been caused by electrical issues or a lithium(laptop/house storage) battery, though, that would be less likely, but the increasing use of RV Solar and its ancillary equipment, multiple storage batteries and wiring, increases the odds of fires from electrical sources as do high-amperage alternator and dual-battery installations. Installation of these involved systems should be performed by professionals or very well informed DIYers.
Propane is the major cause of RV fires and quite a few(in the thousands) burn up every.
We were expecting a couple to arrive at our RV park in NE Texas. They called for last minute directions and said they were just a few minutes away. They never arrived. Later we found out that their motor-home exploded and left the road about a mile & half away and crashed into a tree. Neither one of them survived. The cause was later determined to be a propane leak.
You just can’t be to careful with propane.
I’m so very sorry for your losses Gaelyn. I’m equally grateful that your tribe is found and is embracing you in your time of greatest need. Having the 5er still intact to return to eventually has to give you some peace. I sure hope the insurance company does its very best to get you back on the road.
Nooooooo, glad you are amongst people who love and care for you.
