After several weeks recovering from the Quartzsite Crud and being whipped by the wind I made plans to shoot the moon back at the Cargo Muchacho Mountains.
I am grateful to Yuma friends who let me park for a quiet night in their driveway. Sure beats the noise of traffic, trains, and planes at the VFW-BLM camp north of town. I pretty much slept away the day. Did post a video taken in Silly Al’s Pizza from the visit with Sue and Mo in Quartzsite.
Back to the Cargo Muchacho Mountains BLM camp and parked in the same tireprints only because somebody was in the place I really wanted. They left late in the afternoon but it was too windy chill to walk over and check for signal strength. Because I had signal where I was, I uploaded a fast time-lapse of the traffic at Roadrunner camp near Quartzsite.
Even though it wasn’t yet full I was hoping to shoot the moon. Low clouds hid the moon until sunset.
The next day I discovered a good signal at the desired campsite so moved about an 1/8th of mile deeper into the canyon. Put me insight of vegetation near a dry wash and I could hear birds chirping. Temperature reached 76° so I was able to sit outside and soak in the warmth.
Watched the sun set and was able to shoot the moon.
The next day was equally warm so I got more time outside. The full moon rise occurred after dark making it difficult to shoot the moon without setting up the tripod which I was too lazy to do.
But the next morning I was up early enough to shoot the moon setting. Had some fun adding the Ocotillo to some of those shots. That night I heard coyotes howl followed by the braying of burros.
So I decided to set up the trail-cam the next day. Afternoon wind kept me inside. Good day for napping.
Several more days of high wind kept me inside. Although I was feeling much better my voice still wasn’t back to normal so I didn’t want to push my luck. I had to go outside once to get a full water bottle from the passenger side floor of the truck and that damn wind whisked two empty bottles out and sent them south to Mexico. I managed to finish and download a video from my first walk into the Cargo Muchacho Mountains from just before Christmas.
I’ve spent a lot of this winter in the Yuma, Arizona area because it’s the warmest place to be even with the wind, however, I hope to shoot the moon in March over the Kofa Mountains. But not before making a trip across the border to Los Algodones, Mexico for new eyeglasses.
This is looking good for a decent wildflower year. The area around Organ Pipe has always been incredible in a good year. You don’t even have to leave Two Tanks.
I hope you’re right about the wildflowers. I plan to be near Organ Pipe next month. Will you be in the area?
The winds have been Biblical, here too. You did manage some nice Monn Shots despite the conditions. Hope it stays warm for you.
Thanks. Had fun with the moon at that new to me location. Much warmer now.
Sunset, moonrise, and the moonset fun with Ocotillo; great pictures! 76 sounds so balmy (even with desert wind). Pretty Sierra making the best of a windy day!
Was a great place for sun and moon but I am tired of the wind.
The moon shots are brilliant Gaelyn. It’s been exceptionally windy and cold here in Crete the past few weeks also. Nice that you are seeing friends and having time with them. Take care and have a good weekend.
Thanks. Nothing normal about weather anywhere I guess. Stay warm.
You certainly got some killer moon shots this time around, Gaelyn, in spite of figting that dang cold. And yes, 76 degrees sounds like late spring around here. I am so looking forward to getting warm again, which I never managed to do during our three weeks in the SoCal and AZ desert this time around.
Thanks. Turned into a good place to shoot the moon. I am more than ready for warmer temperatures.
Wow – great moon shots, Gaelyn. Glad you had a 76 day but sounds like you’re still dealing with wind. Hope each day has you feeling better – this crud lingered awhile!
Thanks. I am ready for summer, and no wind. After almost a month, finally beat that crud and even got my voice back.
I am enjoying your retirement! We anticipate ice rain tonight! Yippee.
I’m learning to enjoy retirement with help from folks like you. Thank you.
I was wondering if you feel any deja vu, especially shooting moon over rises you’ve been before. Will each year be a bit different moonrise spot? Glad you’re enjoying new spots, sights. Time does march on. Thank you.
No deja vu, though sometimes I hope for it. Never seems to hit the horizon at the exact same place due to different dates.
Great moon shots, along with the others. I thought my camper was going to tip over on Tues. with the awful wind. It was a bit unnerving. It has been cold too. I was freezing this morning so crawled back into bed. I would love a 76-degree day.
Thanks. It has been a cold and extra windy winter here in the southwest. Just had a couple nice days and now the wind is back.
What fantastic pictures of the moon. They are just amazing, so different and so clear and crisp.. And the sunset too. I think I may have to get a new camera but am afraid I don’t have the funds. Great picture of Sierra as well. Glad you are feeling better. I STILL have my cough. Glasses in Mexico. Wish I could go with you.
Thanks. I would like a lighter weight camera but also not in the budget. Finally recovered from the crud and cough gone too. Hope yours goes away.
Love these shots of the moon, wish i could get shots like that.
Hugs from us both, Nigel and Diane
Thanks. Maybe you can shoot the moon in RSA.
