This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 12 readers including panoramas for big landscapes and bridges, crazy crystal shot, a little snow, snake, bird, and two-seater.
Sue gets #146 for the number of words in her last comment. One of four in a panorama that just doesn’t come out quite right. The Ogden Scenic Wayside Bridges in Oregon over the Crooked River, but I’m not sure what road. Help me out here Sue. I’m pretty sure this was seen along a journey south to Arizona from my 2007 Ranger job at Oregon Caves.
Jodee and Bill chose #301. Sunset through a crystal that hung in my RV window taken in December 2008. And with the same number and Yarnell view without the crystal in January 2009.
Jennifer chose #9191. She LOVES rocks so should enjoy this view below, and with backs to, the iconic Wave. The erosion of ancient sand dunes turned to stone reveals the bedding planes we see as curves and ripples. They indicate which way the wind blew on the dunes.
Jeff chose #1862, “the Battle of Puebla took place on 5 May 1862. It’s been celebrated in California as Cinco de Mayo since 1863.” So this is not on May 5th or drinking a margarita but celebrating ice cream on the Lodge verandah, out of uniform a rare event.
Gypsy chose #0205, “for one Death Valley trip.” One of four in a panorama shot of Badwater Basin on a Death Valley trip to see the Super bloom during February 2016.
Diane and Nigel chose #3004. Sunset over the Badlands from Fonts Point in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California.
Alan chose #1252. Late April 2009 driving towards the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park before it’s open to the public. Over ten years I saw this Spring view differ from buried in snow, flowing with water, brilliant green, and bursting with tiny flowers.
Jo chose #8353. Just a harmless Wandering Garter Snake seen along the Rainbow Rim trail near Parissawampitts Point on the North Kaibab National Forest along the rim of Grand Canyon. I’d been driving around looking at Autumn colors.
Rita got #45 for the number of words in her last comment. Yup, that’s me at 18-months old taken in an Illinois studio in 1955. Seems the 50s were big at this type of posed photography.
Cathy chose #2111. Lush green meadows filled with tiny white flowers surround Crane Lake the end of August, 2010 and during monsoon. Another scene along the drive to the North Rim Grand Canyon along SR67.
Sherry chose #5120. This Raven’s territory seemed to be near the Desert View Watch Tower on the South Rim Grand Canyon National Park. Staff from 2016 stopped at this far eastern overlook after three days of training and headed back to the North Rim.
Sallie and Bill chose #526, “a granddaughter’s birthday.” Wonder how she’d feel about this old two-seater seen at the North Rim Lookout Tower I hiked to in 2009.
I frequently go back as far as I can find for the current month, in this case May 1974, long-time friend Ed at White Pines State Park, Illinois. He took the photo of me the same day and place. Sadly, he died of cancer last year. Though I’m sad he’s not here I am happy for the good memories.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Thanks for the memories
Well, I must say that was a great collections of photos. Always good photos, but sometimes they catch me more than others. Of course that photo of the Wave moved my heart. But the bridge photo was a delight. I loved the first time I came upon that huge crack in the ground, in 1975, driving to California from Northern Idaho. The bridge is 25 miles north of Bend on Highway 97, the route I drove a lot getting from home to southern california. Mo and I have crossed that bridge many times in our travels and sometimes stop for photos. The best time was when we caught some company doing bungie jumping for people. It was really scary to watch, since that canyon is very narrow and very rocky. The woman we watched jump seemed to come awfully close to those rocky basalt cliffs.
Thanks. I figured you know that bridge location. Can’t even imagine bungie jumping from it, or anywhere for that matter.
…. or throwing your children over it.
Enjoyed the variety of pictures this week. Think Sunset over Badlands draws me in the most. Next week #9531
Thanks. #9531 for next week.
Many pictures of places on my bucket list-Death Valley, Anza-Borrego, the Wave.
Love the sunset through the crystal and not shots.
Of course the wave and the shot from Fonts Point are real beauties.
I’ll try 9595 for next week.
Thanks. So many places, so little time. #9595 for next week.
Awesome variety of fotos this week! I’ve tried to get a permit for The Wave several times, Always amazing to see a another picture of it. Of course I’m partial to Font’s Point.
The Kentucky Derby is run on the 1st Saturday in May, tomorrow will be the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby.
Thanks. Might get easier for Wave permits now that BLM has upped the number put out daily. I’m going to assume your number for next week is 148.
I love all the photos, the wave is on my bucket list especially
8185 for next week
Thanks. Might be getting easier for a Wave permit now that BLM is issuing more of them daily. #8185 for next week.
The Second/new Crooked River Gorge bridge.
The Oregon Department of Transportation began planning a new crossing of the Crooked River Gorge in the late 1990’s. To honor the tradition of bridge crossings over the Crooked River Gorge, it was important for this new bridge to complement the older bridges. David Goodyear, an award-winning bride engineer, was contacted to design the new structure – a concrete deck arch bridge, 535 feet long (almost 100 feet longer than its predecessors), 79 feet wide, and 295 feet high. The new Crooked River Bridge is the first major cast-in-place segmental concrete arch bridge in the United States. Construction began in Nov. 1997, and the bridge opened to public on September 16, 2000.
Oregon has magnificent bridges all over the state. Thanks for this update.
Hi Gaelyn, all wonderful photo’s and I love the one I chose of you at age 18 months. Fav , for this week is that beautiful sunset through a crystal which hung in your RV. Have a great weekend and stay safe.
Thanks. I try to always have crystals in the windows for daily rainbows dancing in the house.
Sorry forgot to thank you for those extra points.
Love the pic of the wave and it is certainly our favourite, though our shot of the Badlands is a very close second sharing it with the picture of you. Just love that smile! So sorry about Ed, but good that you have great memories. Have a great weekend, hugs from us both Diane and Nigel. 605 for next week please.
Thanks. Been a busy week moving so looking forward to a weekend off. But does it really matter what day of the week when retired? LOL #605 for next week.
Sometimes, memories are the best, and memories of dear friends make our lives wonderful.
I am enjoying your retirement! And, yes, you found me some delicious rocks! I don’t really know how my daughter ended up a hydrogeologist, but she is! It’s grown on me.
You look so cute in your baby photo. Cheers! #2301
Life does have its downs, so does memories. You have a smart daughter. Thanks. #2301 for next week.
Ah well, I’d enjoy finding that “antique’ two-seater more than that particular grand-daughter would as she isn’t (sadly) much of an outdoor girl. Fun tour through your memories. and definitely yes at our age we are grateful for the memories of good times. (Still, like you, we look forward to making more!). Oh. almost forgot. I guess I will choose 5622
Kids these days probably don’t even know what a “two-seater” is. Yes, let’s keep making memories. #5622 for next week.
I love mini you and sunset. And was so surprised and tickled that my photo matched trip reason for the number! I’m guessing that doesn’t often happen. Wonderful of you relaxing with ice cream. I remember one friend telling me don’t be too available:) I came across date of my first real solo journey called Full Moon Over Rise and just about same month/day as now, so #5809 please.
Thanks. You know I try to correlate photo with comment but it isn’t usually the same place. Right on to solo travel. #5809 for next week.
Dear Gaelyn, a lovely array of photos and stories again. This is the first time I have read your Friday post and it had no SA photos. I almost thought the bridges over the Crooked River were taken in the Western Cape. However, a wonderful collection as always. I LOVE that my number brought up a snake. And I love the 50’s photo of you this was my favorite although I love the photos of your friend and then you on the grass. My number for next week is 4175. Have a great week. Jo PS thank you for visiting my blog. xxx
Thanks. No SA, how did that happen? Could be why I have to read your blog to see SA. 😉 #4175 for next week.
Found the crystal photo very interesting. Any picture of the Wave is my favorite. #15, the length of a new canoe I just bought, for next week please.
Thanks. I love my crystals and like to play. Had a 17 footer about 40 years ago and went in the Minn Boundary Waters. Have fun. #15 for this week.
