This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 15 readers including Southwest forests and red rock, mud, South African wildlife and fossils.
Sherry chose #8367. Always dicey when going for a forest drive during monsoon season but oh so worth the rainbow reward. Seen in the Kaibab National Forest 9-26-14.
Jeff chose #4136 for the acres burned in the CalFire/Airport Fire when he posted last week. Don’t think was a “forest” fire, but California has seen plenty of those. Thinning occurs on the Kaibab National Forest in an attempt to return the Ponderosa Pine forest to the open like environment it should be. When out for a drive in Lookout Canyon I found a horse-camp with this wonderful old rail fence.
Susan chose #1914, “the year my Mom was born.” Summer of 2014 was the year Pat visited from Serbia via Seattle. When folks come to the North Rim, where I was working, I try to show them other places as well and Zion is another nearby national park.
Sue chose #2224, “for our home arrival.” That’s today as I type. My home tends to be wherever I park it, like when staying at Mojave National Preserve in February 2016. Glad I didn’t have to use these human chipped hand and toe holes to get home. Saw these on the equally daring Banshee Canyon Rings Loop Trail near Hole in the Wall camp.
Diane and Nigel chose #1802. A most unusual gall growing on an Arizona White Oak tree in Yarnell.
Keith chose #1209, “the date we closed on the land.” That being near one of my old stomping grounds Tonasket, Washington. This shot from another of my old stomping grounds, Bryce Canyon National Park in 2010 long before I worked there. Look closely to see the natural rock bridge visible from Farview lookout.
Cathy chose #1939. When camped at Toroweap Grand Canyon National Park, one needs to walk carefully to the rim so as not to disturb the cryptobiotic soil. Instead it’s best to follow the well beaten road one mile to the rim.
Sallie and Bill chose #2263, “My daughter’s birthday and age.” Not as old as the stars that were seen at the Star Party on the North Rim Grand Canyon. Here, setting up one of the many telescopes.
Gypsy chose #8012. Visited the South Rim Grand Canyon with a friend the day before my birthday in 2015. Seemed strange looking across canyon to my North Rim summer home at the time. Bright Angel Canyon is where one hikes on the North Kaibab trail and the green at bottom left is Phantom Ranch. Hmmm, where should I celebrate my birthday this year and will you join me?
Wanda chose #8930. So much beauty in the Southwest and Valley of Fire is only an hour from Las Vegas.
Rita chose #0391. A restaurant dinning deck provides opportunity to see wildlife pretty darn close in the private Pilanesberg Game Reserve. Caption please.
Jennifer chose #2498. She likes rocks so I presume that includes fossils. Look closely for the impression, or trace fossil, of a crinoid in this piece of limestone on a fallen Juniper seen at the North Rim Grand Canyon.
Alan and random dot org chose #3598. One of the big “tuskers” seen at Kruger National Park.
Jodee and Bill chose #5421. They see ocean way more frequently than I. Imagine my excitement to wake in camp and walk down to the shore of the Indian Ocean. More shots coming of the sunrise at the end of the post.
Jo chose #4218. After taking friends to visit White Pocket in northern Arizona this is the House Rock Valley Road drive north into Utah in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.
As I was search for photos on 2-22-22 and found Jodee’s photo along the coast taken 2-22-14 it seemed like a no brainer to share a few more shots of that amazing day starting with sunrise, then a privately guided beach walk to the fabulous Mzamba fossil site, and ended with dinner and a beer at MacBanana’s. All in a day in South Africa.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Thanks for the memories
For those new to the blog and/or Foto Friday Fun I want to explain how I do this. I have always been diligent about labeling my photos. When I scanned prints and started shooting digital I added numbers to the descriptive labels (usually starting over daily or monthly) instead of using the camera default number, which I finally accepted many years later. That means that a lot of old photos have very low numbers. Anyway, when you leave a comment with a number, I start with my oldest photos stored on external drives and run a search with your number. I usually choose the oldest on file that hasn’t been published on the blog already. Bonus, for years I’ve added a code to my label that identifies where pics have been posted. Guess I don’t have to explain my complicated system any further. Needles to say, I am OCD about labeling my photos, amongst other things.
As usual I enjoy all your photos. My favorite is the rock bridge, coming in a close second are the sunrise pictures. #8951 for next week please
Thanks. #8951 for next week.
Glorious. The gall on the white oak popped out to me. Is it unusual because oak doesn’t often bloom, or tree has other blooms? Did you cross that rock bridge in Bryce? Are some arches not allowed to be crossed? I learned new one and looked up cryptobiotic soil and wow! Read, one of first living things on Earth 3/5B yrs ago, and makes up 70% of Southwest’s earth. So- I heart zebras…”What’re we watching tonight?” Thx for Foto Friday lowdown! My choice this time #2017 another trip to Patagonia and Velvet Elvis. Now different menu with great pizza, but before, luscious meals AND Lavender Flan mmm. I can’t help my travel-theme picks!:)
Thanks. I hadn’t seen a fuzzy gall like that, more like oversized peas. No, that rock bridge is not accessible and the rock is too soft for climbing. Think the zebras watch B&W? 😉
So much gorgeous here …my eyes are full of all the scenic beauty …and the wonderful African animals. Memories evoked by “our picture… there was a retired science teacher in the little old podunk town where we grew up who had several professional telescopes… star parties at Mr Mosher’s were part of our growing up. I still remember much of what I learned without even knowing I was being taught!
Thanks. How wonderful to grow up with an astronomy teacher. Mind blowing to look into the stars.
I cannot choose a favourite. Your photos are just amazing. Thank you for the rocks, bless your heart! My daughter is a hydrogeologist, and there is so much to learn. I wish I liked to travel. #1925
Thanks. Don’t have to travel much to enjoy rocks, they’re everywhere. #1925 for next week.
Don’t Crush The Crypto!! Love my pic with the Toroweap link. I have some similar photos as you. When you love THAT Canyon can’t get enough of it !! Pretty “all in a day” South Africa pictures. Can’t think of a Z caption just yet but that’s a good picture for something funny! Next week 6290
Thanks. I was sure you’d been to Toroweap more than once. #6290 for next week.
My favorite this week has to be the land bridge. Love the colors. I also love the Valley of the Fires park. We have visited it three times on our way through the area. My choice for next week is 4675
Hard to miss with our southwest orange rocks. #4675 for next week.
Amazing that I was first. Not this week. Looks like you might have gotten to go under the rainbow!
Love the human chipped holds. Another place I need to make it to, The Mojave. As well as Valley of Fire. Your picture pulls me right in. Another fantastic picture of the wonderful Grand Canyon from the south rim. Love all the colors. So beautiful, so grand. Can’t imagine having lunch and seeing that zebra picture. WOW! Also those tusks. And then the sunrise over the water. Really Great pictures for this week Gaelyn. I’ll try 2262 for next time. HA!
Thanks. The posting order is the same as the order comments come to me. You really need to get west one of these winters. #2262 for next week.
So many pictures to comment on! Like many commentators, my favorite was the Bryce Canyon natural rock bridge. Zebra caption: “You’ll get a move on. Your blocking traffic!” #2932 next week.
Thanks. Bryce is special. HeHaw for your Zebra caption. #2932 for next week.
Loved reading about your labeling process. Whew, makes me tired just to think about it. I have over 100k now and the labeling is very iffy for the early years, and possibly a bit iffy for my current photos as well! I loved my choice this time, near Hole in the Wall Camp. We camped there. Such a great, isolated, beautiful quiet place to be. Not sure it is still like that. Maybe next time we get down toward the Mojave we will try it again. We did find some really cool boondocking sites around that area when we took a day trip in the car exploring. My choice for this wee. 8240, for Mo’s birthday this week. She was born in 1940
I do like Mojave Preserve, however most of the roads are rather brutal. I used to write on the back of prints. Really am OCD about it. #8240 for next week.
My comments must get boring. Lovely set of photos. Trying this from my mobile so keeping it short in case it does not work. 2602 for next week please. Forgot to mention that we get a gall like that on the roses here. It is a wasp which lays it’s eggs in them. Hugs from us both. D & N
No comment is boring, it means you were here, so thank you. I knew the gall was wasp eggs, just hadn’t seen one fuzzy red like that before. #2602 for this week.
Hi Gaelyn, thanks for the lovely photos. The brooding sky in the first image is my favorite. My number for next week is 2698 the reservation number of Czechoslovakian guests who are due in at my accommodation gates in ten minutes. Geography was is not a strong suit, but I see their home country is several hundred miles from the Ukrainian hotspot. Have a great day. Jo
Thank you for coming by. How terrifying to live anywhere near this horrid war. Glad they aren’t home for that reason. #2698 for this week.
That photo of the ponderosa pines and the log fence brings back memories to me of growing up in Arizona and Utah.
random dot org says 5410 next week.
I love when the photos evoke your memories. #5410 for this week.
Love my ocean pic and the additional pics inspired by it!! Always fun to see the elephants 🙂
1533 for next week please
Thanks. Been jonesing for ocean. #1533 for this week.
The red sandstone just jumps to life in your Bryce photo. Wowzzer!
The prize of diesel is getting silly at my local station. For net week I’d like 529 to reflect the local diesel price.
Thanks. Sure glad I’m not in CA. But then I haven’t been to town in over a week so don’t know what fuel is currently in AZ. Guess I’ll find out soon enough. #529 for this week.
