This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 12 readers including a variety of places in South Africa, the Kaibab Plateau in Arizona, and my first motorhome.
Alan chose #1551. He’s been shoveling snow lately and does go out in the rain as well. This shot of the wet forest drive after holding out for no rain while camping at Marble View.
Cathy chose #2417. A plant she should be familiar with, fruiting Cholla, at a place she’s probably hiked, Snake Gulch trail on the North Kaibab National Forest, Arizona.
Doris chose #9309. Sunset over the Kanab cemetery through my window when living at Crazy Horse RV park the winter of 2015/16.
Susan chose #277. This giant amethyst geode stood about six feet tall, for sale in Quartzsite during January 2012. I didn’t dare ask the price. But if I had a forever home base, I’d want one big enough to sit inside, just one half. Amethyst is a wonder calming stone.
Jodee and Bill chose #7201. Saw these Burchell’s Zebra on an early morning safari drive in Karoo National Park, South Africa during my 2014 visit.
Sue chose #9622, “for another daughter’s birthday!” Two days after my 2014 birthday I was chatting with warthogs in our camp at Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa. Damn beggars.
Rita chose #7777, for some reason a very popular number. While parked off grid on a friend’s land in Walnut Grove I enjoyed more than one beautiful sunset during the spring of 2020 on my way northward back to Bryce Canyon National Park.
Diane and Nigel chose #402. Three days after opening the North Rim, May 15th 2008, and my first season working at Grand Canyon National Park, I enjoyed this view from the Cape Royal overlook.
Gypsy chose #3162, “for Bisbee adventures.” That’s one of three in a panorama of my first adventure in South Africa and a stop at the Paul Sauer Bridge, this looking upstream of Storms River in the bottom of the canyon.
TreDeuce chose #1367. My first visit to South Africa in 2010 and saw the Big 5 on my first day in Kruger National Park, including elephants more than once.
Jo chose #8766. Animals she’s familiar with, Springbucks and Gemsbok, at a place I’m sure she’s been, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa during my 2014 visit.
Sallie and Bill chose #155. Called “The Box” towards the bottom of Bright Angel Canyon as I was hiking towards Phantom Ranch, at the bottom of Grand Canyon. This shot from my first rim to rim hike in 2008.
My choice, and first motorhome (the one in the middle). My partner, to the left, and I had moved that winter of 1999/2000 starting with a Skoolie conversion, then a morphydite camper, and my own RV with him in his own.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Thanks for the memories
1371# for next week.. Back on the road tomorrow into Nevada to rescue a dog. By the time I get back I will have over 4,000 miles under my butt in the past 3-weeks. Maybe the “beggars” would make good companions. I wonder how they would be on the trail with a leash..
Dang, I barely put that many miles on the whole winter. Imagine the reaction to warthog on a leash out for a walk? #1371 for next week.
Love my Cholla. But then I love all cacti. And give them the respect (distance & care when handling) they demand. Lol Next week #5000. Let’s see what’s in the middle of the stack. Have a good week!
Thanks, I too love cactus, respectfully. #5000 for next week.
Impossible choice again this week. Love our shot of the North Rim, but there are so many African memories here as well. Of course any sunset is hard to beat also. 1102 for next week please.
Have a great weekend, keep warm. Hugs from Nigel and Diane
Thanks. 80°F today is absolutely lovely. #1102 for next week. Stay warm.
Hi Gaelyn. Lovely mixture of photo’s,we can never get bored can we. I just love that huge Amethyst g, also the elephants bathing at Krugar Nat Park. The North Rim at Grand Canyon is my fav for this week and can I have 0374 for next week please. Enjoy your weekend and take care.
Thanks. I love the variety of memories. #0374 for next week.
Dear Gaelyn. My choice brought back great nostalgia! Grant and I did the Kgalaghadi Transfrontier park in out Isuzu double cab. Before the biking days. I still have a plaque somewhere in the park supporting the lions. This weekend is my birthday. So 6900 for next week. Have a great day Jo
I sure wish we’d 4×4 for Kgalaghadi, the few driveable roads were limiting. Thank you for supporting the lions. A HUGE Happy Birthday! #6900 (going on 40) for next week.
None was more favorite than others this week, although I did enjoy my warthogs. Love the old motorhomes. Don’t see many of those rolling down the road any more, even if they are sometimes parked here and there. How about 9812 for the youngest daughter’s birthday.
At over 50 years old it’s no wonder these oldie but goodie RVs are no longer rolling. Don’t figure new ones will last that long. #9812 for next week.
Never have I seen a geode as huge and beautiful as the amethyst. It is stunning! The “beggar” warthogs gave me giggles. What a fun way to start the day looking at all the wonderful pictures and learning something new along the way. #1937 next week, please.
Wouldn’t that be an awesome find for a rockhound? Thank you. #1937 for next week.
Wow, that first photo!! Looks like some of the rains I have been caught out in during runs and hikes. Doesn’t bother me as long as I can keep my phone dry. I forget how hard it can rain in the west. You don’t get that much rain but sometimes the sky just opens up and lets it all out at once.
I love the last photo to, partners with your own RVs. Somebody needs some space, they just drive off for a while.
I remember the all day long deluges growing up in IL. SW can certainly drop the bucket load but usually doesn’t last long. It’s the all-dayers I run from when washes run fast and deep.
I’m here and it’s still Friday, hooray, right on time for once! Oh I am exhausted thinking about that hike in “our” picture (well, the return trip especially) — thanks for taking us along on this and all the other hikes you do that we never could! And for the trips to Africa, the same. So two separate but equal motor homes seems like not such a bad idea at all. Except that then I’d have to do all the driving of one, which would definitely cut into my time for photos from the road! Just to be different (and because it doesn’t worry me) how about 6666 next time?
Thanks, you did better than me, answering on Sunday. There are times I wish I had a driver, but then I take photos while driving. #6666 for this week.
Some of the joy with your photos and writings is not only being in the present, but memories of places past and introducing new areas for my list. Which reminds me of your clever line on past site heading. I did notice you changed the lead photo of your site:) So “my” photo made me realize how I’m drawn to gorges, ravines, boxes. My fav is also the Marble View which TOO reminds me of eagle eyes road up Cerbat Mts over Chloride AZ. Check out the lovely campgrounds: Windy Point and Packsaddle for views, privacy. Also loved you with Pumbaas. #4112 April 1! stay in Patagonia’s Lucy & Desi Spartan long, long trailer:)
Thanks. I do like to live in the NOW, but enjoy looking back as well. I’m sure your list is getting long. I love driving through forest on tiny two tracks, so now will add Eagle eyes rd to my list. #4112 for this week.
Always a fun variety of photos. For next week I’d like 43 the total points scored in Super Bowl 56.
Thanks. I heard about the Superb Owl. 😉 #43 for this week.
That Amethyst is absolutely amazing. Where in the world would one find one that huge. Amethyst is perhaps my very favorite gem. I can use all the calming I can get. Great pictures of the elephants and zebras. How wonderful that you got to go to Africa multiple times. Don’t think that will happen for me sadly. Guess I’d better go back now and see how I missed last week. SIGH. I’ll try 1623 for next week.
Amethyst is found in this country but I think this came from Uruguay. Can you imagine the excitement finding one that big, or bigger. Small piece works for calming. I keep a cluster near my desk. I long to return to South Africa. #1623 for this week.
