This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including holes in rock both natural and human made, of course there’s rock, and a tailless elephant too.
Jo chose #7700. A very rare shot taken through a window in a tunnel in Zion National Park. Winter is the only time it’s quiet enough in the park to slow down in the tunnel, or maybe even stop like we did here.
Diane and Nigel chose #701. Met up with Berta in Flagstaff and we had breakfast at this Howard Johnson’s Railway Restaurant with nostalgia for the historic railroads.
Melissa chose #650. There sits the remains of two dwellings on each side of Box Canyon at Wupatki National Monument, Arizona.
Cathy chose #3883, a mirror image number. It’s almost a mirror image on each side of the drainage below Jumpup Point, a drainage that eventually flows into the Grand Canyon.
Gypsy chose #1212, when she traveled in North Carolina. I traveled on BLM Road 8910, House Rock Valley that sits below the North Kaibab Plateau in Arizona.
TreDeuce chose #1359. Watched this tailless elephant take a dust bath in Kruger National Park during my first visit to South Africa in March of 2010.
Alan and random dot org chose #8810. A rather interesting view looking down two stories in the center of Desert View Watchtower on the South Rim Grand Canyon National Park, where I happened to be for my birthday in 2015.
Jennifer chose #6277. Good thing she likes rocks, as this shot is full of granite boulders in the area of White Tank campground in Joshua Tree National Park.
Sherry chose #2002. This fin of rock called Angels Window can be walked on top of from the Cape Royal trail on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.
Sue chose #2022. Not the best shot I’ve ever taken at Zion National Park, but it’s through a window on their shuttle in the Virgin River Canyon when Pat came to visit summer of 2014.
Jodee and Bill chose #3314. An unidentified plant seen in Hluhluwe iMfolozi National Park, South Africa. Maybe Jo or Diane will recognize it.
I have a few photos hanging in a file under 2021 called “because”, where I put and process past photos because I think they deserve a second look. Like this oldest one from 4-18-10, an arch in Haulapai Canyon on the Havasu Canyon trail, Havasupai Indian Reservation, Arizona. And more recently from 1-20-21, this panorama of morning light rays on the Plomosa Mountains from a camp just north of Quartzsite, Arizona.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Thanks for the memories
They are amazing photos, all! Happy Friday! Thanks for all the rocks. I love them. #7723
Thanks Jenn. #7723 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn just getting used to new computer. Great pics this week. Of course i love all the Canyon shots especially the one called angels window on the North Rim of Grand Canyon, Fav for this week is the lovely elephant at Krugar National Park no 7721 for next week please, Have a good and safe weekend.
Glad to see you’re working it out. #7721 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn I think the plant is a Balloon Cotton Bush (Gomphocarpus physocarpus) but not positive. Check it out. As ever an amazing set of photos, but the first one and the last two have to be favourites, brilliant shots and yes they have to be ‘because’ 😊
We hope all is well and that the desert is warmer than here at present. We do have blue skies and sun today but there is still ice lying around. Hug as always, Diane and Nigel
OOPs forget next weeks number 1401 please. D
Got it.
I think you’re right about the plant, also known as “Hairy Balls” and “Bishop Balls”, a member of the milkweed family. Thanks, I believe you sent to Zion. Most certainly warmer, though I haven’t drug out any shorts. No ice. #1401 for next week.
Love my almost mirror image AND link. Beautiful area to get lost and find yourself. 8910, Joshua Tree & your Arch bring big smiles. Friday Rocks!! with this post. 😄👍 Next # 2581
Thanks. Figured you would know some of these places. #2581 for next week.
HI Gaelyn, each and every image is brilliant! Unfortunately I don’t know that pretty flower in Hluhluwe Game Reserve. The last image is spectacular. I love the folder name: Because. Very clever. My choice for next 22k 1201. It was the littlest Hedges’ birthday on Wednesday; Liam turned seven. have a great weekend. Jo
Thanks. Diane identified the Balloon Cotton Bush. Most SA plants are IDed because Joan knows them all. #1201 for next week.
I am wondering if you remember my words on the blog a very long time ago. I talked about JOY. In capitals. How I felt it that morning hiking. IN THE VERY SPOT OF THAT PHOTO in Joshua Tree on that very trail. What a delight to have that moment brought back to me in your photo. Some of the others were brilliant photos, I loved camping near Wupatki, but the Joshua Tree photo elicited a deep, emotional response. Made me want to jump in the MoHo and head for Joshua Tree. Except….the people…so many of them any more. Hard to enjoy the place the way we used to. Lemme see…maybe 9898 for whatever reason for next time. Maybe imagining a world in 9898.. wouldn’t it be interesting to see what the next 7,876 years brings to our planet? About 7,000 years ago Crater Lake was being formed by the eruption of Mt Mazama….devastating human life all around, which still managed to survive.
I don’t remember the post, but I can just about see you there with a look of JOY on your face. I love how our lives have overlapped in so many places. And that we went before the crowds. It’s easier for me to imagine the eruption of Mt Mazama than the far future. #9898 for next week.
I found the picture of the rocks at White Tank camp ground fascinating. #9000 for next week please
All the rocks in Joshua Tree are fascinating. #9000 for next week.
So many pretty rock formations this week. That tunnel window reminds how looooong and dark that tunnel is! That plant looks like a weed with melons :-)))
#2345 for next week please
Thanks. Can’t go wrong with rock. I got to lead traffic through the tunnel with the truckcamper. Won’t do that again at $15. The funny plant is a member of the milkweed family, Balloon Cotton Bush, and the “melons” are about the size of a golfball. #2345 for next week.
Wow! Do I like 6277. Beautiful composition of Structure, Elements & Light. Definitely a candidate for next year’s calendar.
Artfully captured beauty makes me feel. Thanks.
Ooop’s! 1359 + 2= 1361 for next week.
Getting excited about getting back to the desert… and getting to hell out of Texas… Yahoo!
Got it. Get it!
Thanks. Sometimes I get really lucky. I don’t know how you can spend so much time in TX. #1359 for next week.
Great photos all, I love the Joshua Tree NP. That place is on my bucket list. Lots and lots of rocks and other stuff to look at there.
random dot org says 5231 for next week!!
Thanks. Joshua Tree is a must see, just be ready for crowds. #5231 for this week.
Mm your last two. I love rays of light. In the Jumpup photo, I see watermelon slices:) Drawn to White Tanks mt area photo. #4769 next please. Thank you G.
Thanks, just because. 😉 #4769 for this week.
Wonderful all of them. Would love to see Zion when it was that uncrowded. If I may come back in to the game I will take #352 next week. How come the elephant didn’t have a tail?
Thanks. Zion is crowded almost always now days. Hard to say what bit off the elephants tail. #352 for this week.
How did I miss this Foto Friday? Who knows. I didn’t know it until I went to this week’s. That happens just a tad too much for me. SIGH
Anyway, Love the picture going through the tunnel to Zion. Brings back great memories for me. I sure hope the crowds will slip back at some point before I’m too old to return with Winnona. I think I took that same picture at Desert Watch Tower. What a fantastic work of art that building is.
Always love your elephant pictures and am partial to the first “because” picture. I’d love to hike the Havasu Canyon Trail. I’m too late for a number for last week so I’ll just go there and try for this week. Life is slipping away from me in my inattention.
No big deal, I’m sure you’re busy. Unless we get more parks to spread people around, I don’t see visitation dropping.
