This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including the contrasts of snow and desert.
Sue chose #9149. At the base, about 90°, of the actual Wave there is frequently a pool of water that offers nice reflections but hikers are asked to stay out of the water to protect aquatic life. I saw tadpoles with bodies the size of quarters. Also keeps residues out of the water from things like sunscreen.
Alan and Random dot org chose #5788. The density and diversity of the Sonoran vegetation seems to increase at the southern Arizona border with Mexico. This is nearby at a favorite boondock in the Ajo area.
Gypsy chose #4214, “time spent in the deep south after Hurricane Katrina.” My mind sees bleakness after that storm, as many see a bleak desert. This particular area near the Arizona/California southern border lacks the dense growth of the desert seen above. Nice place for big views, rockhounding, and not far from Yuma.
Diane and Nigel chose #3112. Sunset over the snowy Sierra Mts as seen from the warmer Alabama Hills below. This was taken in March 2017 and there is already way more snow pack this year, which is awesome.
TreDeuce chose #1357. The second day after opening for the 2014 season at the North Rim Grand Canyon and I was on the Lodge verandah. Rangers get paid in sunsets.
Cathy chose #5891. She might recognize this view, or similar, of the cemetery in Kanab, Utah seen through my RV window while snowing. Taken 11-28-15 when I wintered at Crazy Horse RV Park (previous owners).
Jeff chose #167, for the predicted year end percentage of water content in the Sierra Mts snowpack. So good to see. Also good to see Wizard Island through a smoky haze at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon during nearby fires in mid-September 2007. I was working at Oregon Caves National Monument and took a road trip.
Wanda chose #3789. This lovely grove ended my Mt Palm Springs walk in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California.
Doris chose #1110. Oh no, back to snow, the end of April 2010 the meadows wore white along the SR67 drive through the Kaibab National Forest, and the yet unopened North Rim Grand Canyon.
Sherry chose #1222. OK, an elephant foot might seem weird, however, visiting and learning at the Elephant Museum in Kruger National Park South Africa was not weird, it was fascinating. Besides I know Sherry takes pics of signs and displays. Do you know that elephants walk on their toes, that’s why they are often depicted as ballerinas.
Melissa chose #1010, for the stripes and spots from last weeks Zebras and Giraffes. Her choice is one of three in a panorama of Havasu Falls on the Havasupai reservation. Calcium rich water deposits travertine creating rim edged pools in the blue water and drip-like formations on the canyon walls.
My choice from 30 years ago, January 1992, when I was a student at WWU (Western Washington University), Bellingham. One of my nature getaways was as far as I could drive without getting stuck in snow for views of Mt Baker, northern most USA peak in the western Cascade Range.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Thanks for the memories
Oh no, Gaelyn, I didn’t choose a number last Friday. I tested positive for Covid that day and the rest of the week has been a painful blur. Please put me down as 7700 for next week. Happy 2022. Jo
Oh no Jo! I hope you are feeling OK. Take care of yourself please. #7700 for next week.
We love our shot of the snowy mountains and the pink sky, but every photo this week is a favourite. Just on our way out, so this is a little rushed. 701 for next week please. Hugs from us both, Diane and Nigel
Thanks. #701 for next week.
Well, once I saw that Purple Sweater I was Won Over! 8*)
I would like to try 650 for next week, please. (It is 6:50am)
Oh how I wish I still had that sweater. Too bulky for RV on the road living. #650 for next week.
Your two pics are the faves this week. I do recognize your Crazy Horse camp spot; but from 89. ; ) I think I’m liking the snowy pics, Sierra Mtns & 67. Happy to see it this year for the snowpack & water levels. Have a great weekend! #3883 next time please (seems I’m drawn to mirror image #’s for some reason right now)
I too am happy for snowpack, somewhere I’m not. 😉 #3883 for next week.
I love that I can click to another page, like seeing more Alabama Hills, which I added to my list! Sonora Deserts reminds me I wonder if they’re only still allowing foot and horse traffic off roads between I-8 and 10. Good to hear the grounds are recovering. Foot into quiet nature and Overland stagestop. You have amazing memory of so many places! or maybe cheats. I sure do. Anyway, all so great. Say Oregon three times and tap me there:) Oh, I can’t figure what that last photo is of? #1212 was traveling NC, and Amos Lee with Avett Brothers.
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoy the links to previous posts. Writing about the places I’ve been, and this Foto Friday Fun, help my memory. I miss Oregon. Last photo, snow on the peak of Mt Baker, film print then scanned and digitized. #1212 for next week.
Mount Baker. My very first ascent of a Cascade peak/mountain, now over 50-years ago. Time flies.
Hoping ‘Jo’ quickly recovers from the scourge plaguing our planet.
1359# for next week.
Stay warm.
The only peak I’ve ever climbed was Mt St Helens, and after she was shorter, 30 years ago. #1359 for next week, though I could have sworn it was suppose to be #1360. 😉
I originally misstated adding (3)’. It should have been (2). Adding (2) should keep all the numbers prime. Adding the prime number (3) doesn’t do that. If not, I’m sure somebody here will catch that and mote it.
Sorry, I’ll never remember all that.
Great photos all, i love the Sonoran vegetation photo the best.
8810 from random dot org for next week.
Thanks. #8810 for next week.
Love your photos, as always! Gorgeous sunset at Grand Canyon!!
I’ll try 6277 next week.
Thank you. Rarely a bad sunset at Grand Canyon. #6277 for next week.
Love the Wave of course (bucket list) and Great shot of the Sierra Mountains from the Alabama Hills (bucket list) and the North Rim sunset (want to return). . My photo was not weird at all but very interesting. I did not know they walked on their toes. What amazing animals they are. But my hands down favorites are the Havasu Falls (BUCKET LIST) and the great pictures of you from the side and the close up of Mount Baker. 30 years ago. Isn’t it unbelievable? You seriously could make a calendar from every single Foto Friday post you do. I’ll try 2002 for next week please.
Thanks. You better get west to check places off your list. All worthy. Elephants are amazing. #2002 for this week.
Your photos are always great, but this time there was an extra special zing. Of course, I was enamored when I opened the post and saw the first one was the best one was my choice for the week. You know I love your photos of the Wave, always a bit different than the zillions of stock photos that are cruising around the internet.
Wizard Island shrouded in smoke in the summer of 2007. I guess our smoky summers have been happening longer than I remember. The Biscuit Fire in 2002 was my first introduction to Southern Oregon summer smoke, the first year I moved to Southern Oregon. It was a helluva a year! The years in between have been less so, until the 2013 when I remember smoke being horrendous that year. When I go back through my calendar I see smoke over and over again for the same time of year. And on and on it goes. I’ll choose 2022 this time, hoping for a better summer after our record rains and snows this winter.
Thank you. I love your comments. I may visit and take pics of icons, but I also like to shoot everything else too. I worked at Oregon Caves during the Biscuit Fire. It was creepy and smoke drifted into the cave. I truly pray for no more big wildfires and time to rehab our neglected forests. #2022 for this week.
Hi Sue? I’m Gypsy and we know Gaelyn:) I am from Grants Pass! First nine years of life enjoyed that freedom 1957-66, Josephine Hospital. Lived on Highland, then Regina Way, when just dirt road. Enjoyed reading of a fellow GP. Thanks.
Oops, I typed too fast. I go by Gypsy, but it auto filled Gail, given name. take care.
We’re still hoping to get a good dusting of snow on our surrounding mountains – your Sierras are so pretty! Happy New Year and best wishes for a year of all the best kind of surprises.
#3314 next week please
As long as the snow stays in the mountains I’m OK with that. We so need the snowpack everywhere. #3314 for this week.
I too hope for snow, in the mountains where it belongs and is desperately needed. #3314 for this week.
