This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including my youth and before my time, with travels to the Southwest and South Africa too.
Lisa chose #915. Although I don’t know what kind of vehicle this is (what’s left anyway) it’s certainly from before my time. While walking in the Weaver Mountains many years ago in Yarnell I came across this rusty relic.
Jeff chose #602, “the length of last nights eclipse.” Imagine living over 1000 years ago when an unexplainable eclipse occurred. You can just barely see a Native ruin right of center seen in Wupatki National Monument in Arizona. I was there 4-16-09 and it snowed.
Rita chose #3322. Nature’s rock art displays bedding planes and minerals on a sandstone boulder seen along the Bunting Trail in Kanab, Utah. The trail leads to dinosaur tracks.
Diane and Nigel chose #1911. The luscious rolling green hiked through in the Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa in March 2010.
Doris chose #3775. Appropriately named Sunset Dam, a great stop before rushing back to camp before the gates close. Kruger National Park South Africa 2-13-14.
Sue chose #2045, “for the date it will probably be before I ever get to Africa.” She’d be 100 years old then. At this time in history it’s possible she’ll live that long. But in the meantime, she could settle with the more nearby Death Valley National Park and get a sunset view over Badwater Basin and Telescope Peak.
Sherry chose #3. My dad’s powerboat sitting almost high and dry along the shore of the Illinois River as the barge going by pulls the water in an undertow. The boat’s name was Six-Pac as dad said it wouldn’t run without at least that much beer on board, and there was always more than that. Taken in 1969 and later scanned.
Jennifer got #11 for the number of words in her last comment. A rather lousy film shot from March 1975 later scanned. A frozen waterfall at the head of Kaskaski Canyon in Starve Rock State Park in Ottawa, Illinois. This was a favorite place to visit in my youth and I returned during 2012 when I went to my 40th high school reunion.
Sallie and Bill chose #1128, their anniversary. How about an anniversary panorama sunset over the Vermilion Cliffs from August, 2010. A favorite stop of mine along SR89A and I must have been headed back to the North Rim.
Cathy chose #1202. Another must stop place along SR89A, Navajo Bridge, where it’s likely to see California Condors, and this wonderful view upstream of the Colorado River in Marble Canyon.
Alan chose #1944. OK, not my photo, but I just couldn’t resist. This staged wedding shot taken in 1944 in Millers Chapel along the tour route in Oregon Caves National Monument. The photo is in my history archives from when I worked at the cave beginning in 2002.
After that season at Oregon Caves, I caravanned from Washington to southern California in November 2002 with my dear friend and life mentor Darlene. We lived in our RVs and sold at a fleamarket in Yucca Valley where she is modeling some of my jewelry. I visited nearby Joshua Tree National Park more than a few times.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Thanks for the memories
That car is a Model T, Gaelyn. The fenders are a giveaway with that beaded feature in them. Google “1925 Model T” to see what I mean.
Let’s do 2525 for next week, which is not only a one-hit wonder by Zager and Evans, but is also the year the Lions will finally win a Super Bowl.
Thanks, I obviously don’t know my classic cars, or football either. #2525 for next week.
My photo is one of my many favorite places in Northern AZ. Interesting pictures this week. Thanks as always for sharing. Next week 3576
Thanks. The bridge is almost in your front yard. #3576 for next week.
The frozen waterfall reminds me of the times Multnomah Fall’s froze in spectacular fashion and crazies climbed it.
3375# is a pic that evokes memories of kayaking the Everglades and Caddo Lake.
6/10/5- (50) for next week, for my first wife who recently died of smoking related lung cancer. We will miss You kid.
In a phone conversation a couple of weeks before she died she reminded me that I always told her… “Those damn things will kill you someday” _ “You were right, I should have listened”
I think ice climbing is crazy, but they did it at Starve Rock also. Not me. Sorry to hear of your loss. Glad I finally quit that nasty habit. #6105 for next week.
So many interesting pics here Gaelyn. especially the one of you in the Origon Caves. I also like the one I chose of the Nature rock art along the Bunting Trail in Utah. Fav this week is SR 89A, Navajo Bridge, a wonderful view indeed of the Colorado River in Marble Canyon.Hope all is well with you. Have a great weekend.
Thanks. That’s actually me in a cavern in Joshua Tree National Park. #206 for next week.
Sorry Gaelyn forgot to pic a number…No 206 please.
Hard to pick a favourite this week, but perhaps it has to be ours which made me very emotional when I saw it. We keep thinking that soon we can visit again, when we now just have the news that there is a new variant on the go and all flights to and from Africa are banned – again. This is the time of the year when the National parks are booked out with visitors, they so need the money but they are having huge cancelations So so sad. The variant has already found its way to Belgium – a flight from Egypt!!! When will it ever end? Feeling pretty depressed.
Have a good weekend and take care. Hugs from us both, Nigel and Diane.
2611 for next week please
Last week I looked at airfare to RSA and was appalled that it’s almost doubled. Then I too heard about the new variant. When will it end? Hugs to you two also. #2611 for next week.
I love the Vermillion Cliffs and Death Valley pics especially.
I got my calendar in the mail today. I love it!!
4959 for next week
Thanks. Glad you like the calendar. #4959 for next week.
Love that lush green in South Africa and your gorgeous picture of the Colorado river from the Navajo bridge. My picture reminds me of my family spending 2 weeks several summers in a row on a lake in Indiana where I had a boyfriend with a speedboat who took me water skiing, a sport I absolutely loved. I’m happy with my single digit choices so I’ll carry on with #4 for next week.
Thanks. I too loved to water ski in my youth. #4 for next week.
Oh NO How did I miss last week? I need to scroll back and see why I missed it. Please give me 2711; today’s very significant date in my life. Happy weekend to you. Jo
I am sorry for that significant date. 🙁 #2711 for this week.
Thank you for the beautiful sunset Anniversary gift!! Loved the Joshua Tree memories (I have a few of those also) and all of the scenic travels. Would love to visit and see dinosaur footprints!
Thanks. Glad you liked it. There are several places with easy access to dinosaur footprints in Utah. #1121 for next week.
Mostly off-the-grid for the past couple weeks south of San Felipe, with crappy cell signal. Lots of fun photos, thank for your efforts it takes to catalog them all. For next week I’d like 2112 for the number of ounces in the 6 kilos of shrimp we returned with. 6 kilos = 211.2 oz. Looking forward to your winter posts as I get caught up.
Good for you. Was talking with a friend about my month in San Felipe and desire to be on the shore, somewhere. I wish I could still eat shrimp because that sounds wonderful. #2112 for this week.
