This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 10 readers including travels and camps in California, Arizona, and Utah, little ole me and my art, plus a winter evacuation in Washington.
Diane and Nigel chose #2210. They saw a similar view of sunset from the Lodge when visiting the North Rim Grand Canyon. Rangers get paid in sunsets, moon is overtime.
Jo chose #7000. A recently seen rainbow phenomenon while camping during monsoon on the Kaibab Plateau.
Jodee and Bill chose #3110. Sunrise—a rare for me sight anywhere—at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California.
Rita chose #9999. A recent sunset from a desert camp north of Quartzsite, Arizona seen in January this year.
Cathy chose #2941. Back to Anza-Borrego the day before above looking at the Santa Rosa Mountains.
Gypsy chose #413, “for my first trip to Cochise Stronghold in Dragoons and a yurt.” A place I have yet to visit will be added to the forever growing list. However, getting a half-way decent shot through a tunnel window in Zion National Park was a first for me in 2008. Also my first season as a Park Ranger at the North Rim Grand Canyon and I was exploring all kinds of places near the park.
Sherry chose #1244. The Navajo Bridge Interpretive Center is a great stop for information, shopping, bathroom, and walking onto the old bridge with a high probability of seeing California Condors. Sadly the parking lot is not big enough for RVs but it’s a short walk from the little berg of Marble Canyon, Arizona.
Sue got #39 for the number of words in her last comment. Me at 13 months and my brother at 8 years. Taken in 1955, scanned decades later.
Alan gets #50 for the number of words in his last comment. The 1972 high school art assignment was interpreting the “city”. I grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago where all these businesses advertised in the newspaper. So I clipped the ads and then painted an acrylic collage. Most aren’t even around anymore.
Jeff chose #117, “for the 1st time in the 117 years of the World Series the leadoff batter hit a homerun on his 1st swing. Go ASTROS!” The first time recorded in our lifetimes was the 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens, where I worked my first season as a Ranger in 1992. This shot from the Norway Pass trail looking down on Meta Lake shows some of the extent of “blast zone” or blown down trees.
A good introduction to my choices, though it was Sue’s number that started this. Four years after above, I volunteered during the winter in maintenance—and that’s it’s own story. Was a winter to remember.
Over two feet of snow at Mt St Helens in February 1996 followed by an ice storm and freezing temperatures with high wind.
Then it rained and rained and rained flooding the Lewis River.
Flooding took out about 20 feet of road, same bridge as above.

OMW Gaelyn, what tough weather you had and the results. Thanks for sharing. I am at a family funeral in the Free State (300km from home – in my old home town) and will return to the Berg tomorrow. My number for next week is 1302 (my birthday) Have a great week. Jo
What an incredible set of pictures this week! I can’t pick a favorite although mine, Anza-Borrego, keeps that on my list to visit. Nice shot through the Zion tunnel. Next week #8120
Thanks. I highly recommend Anza-Borrego though the camping situation has changed since I was there last. Not the only time I scored a tunnel shot. #8120 for next week.
Whatever are you doing commenting on the blog while at a funeral. Be well. #1302 for next week.
Oh foot. Lost it. I’ll try again later. Too long for tge phone I guess
Our favourite has to be our photo, We have a similar shot but no moon, wonderful memories. Love the photo of you with your brother. Wow we cannot imagine you working a winter in snow, you hate the cold as much as we do!!!!!! 2910 for next week please. Hope your weather is better than ours, it looks like we have rain set in for the next week! Not freezing but it is still pretty cold we have the fire burning. Warm hugs from us both, Diane and Nigel.
Thanks. I didn’t used to be as bad about cold weather, but the older I get… I am currently sitting in front of an electric heater every morning. #2910 for next week. Stay warm.
I love the olden days photos and the story! Flooding is a scary thing! #234
Thanks. It was a scary experience that made a great story. #234 for next week.
Zion NP tunnel. At the upper terminus of the tunnel is a small parking lot and a trailhead to the best short hike I have ever taken. Spectacular views, rock formations, and color. Easy hike. Highly recommended. RV parking if you have a truck bed camper. No trailers, though, there ‘may’ be RV parking at an upper lot.
Flood of 96′; I was 3-days downtown Portland building a seawall against the rapidly rising Willamette River.
Our wooden boat building club shop at Oaks Park had 9-ft. of water in it. We marked the wall with a line and plaque.
I spent days wondering if my sailboat at the marina would be swept away down the Columbia and realized there are all kinds of ways to lose a boat.
My cabin on Buck Creek just before it enters the White Salmon River survived another flood.
Some great pics.
That Zion parking has always been full when I go by.
That was some flood. Sounds like you lucked out except for a lot of work.
Thanks.
When you are on a motorcycle, you can nearly always find a parking spot. At other times I just lucked out or waited for someone to leave or someone was pulling out as I came in. I have had to pass by, reluctantly, a few times, but was able to stop for other trails farther down the road.
A few miles past the tunnel is a road that goes north up to hwy.-14 and crosses the Virgin River several times. Can be a bit rough, but worth the time. I have traveled it in a Civic, but condition varies.
Wow those pictures of Mt St. Helens are gripping. First the total devastation and then your winter there and having to be evacuated. Looks scary all the way around. I’ll try 8133 for next week please.
The evacuation was an unusual experience, though the helicopter ride was fun. #8133 for next week.
The shots of the flooding are dramatic. Anytime a spillway overflows then everybody downstream is on their own.
3871 for next week.
Flood damage went west to the interstate and beyond. Quite the adventure. #3871 for next week.
Thank you much and yay for first times. Partly the allure of new roads, places, trails. Reading of best short hike and volcano, reminds me of one in southeast AZ quadrant, I believe a lava-made grand arch. I could look it up, but take awhile. Look at a real to goodness map:) My brother is doing his next long hike on Skyline Islands Traverse. #1115> date of Rosetta landing on comet’s shady side, and effects shown of an earthquake event while living in Glendale…Arizona! Being bit funny, but Is there a rule of thumb/custom blog comment length, or by you? :)Gypsy
New is unbelievably exciting but repeat visits often provide something new as well. Lava arch sounds cool. No rules on comments except keep it civil. #1115 for this week.
Hi Gaelyn, those floods looked horrendous and there have been many around the world recently.Great photo’s and I love that one of you at 13 months old, what a cutie. My fav your shot through a tunnel window in Zion National Park. Brilliant !! no 4374 for next week please. Hope you had a great weekend.
This flood had a lot to do with clearcut hillsides and bad weather. I’ve managed to score a few more times on window shots in the Zion tunnel. Best taken in off season with little traffic and that hardly happens anymore. #4374 for this week.
Ah well, think I will try again now that I am at the computer. Trouble is, I can’t remember exactly what I wrote. It was a LONG paragraph. LOL. Pretty sure it was something about the Navajo Bridge. I had to go to google maps and look at that route, trying to remember if I have ever been that way. Can’t believe I haven’t. So, yeah, I loved this photo of the bridge interpretive center because once again, you made me search my own memories as well as enjoy yours.
Hard to believe you haven’t driven over Navajo Bridge at some point between Flagstaff and points north. Definitely put it on the list, and look for Condors. I love sparking your memories.
