This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by nine readers including unusual sandstone formations, an old camp trip, and lots of lions.
Sue chose #1002, “for the day we returned home.” This was the first day I visited Kruger National Park, and the first day I saw lions. These two brothers aren’t quite full grown as seen by the lack of a huge mane. South Africa 3-8-2010.
Jeff chose #1023, “for Borrego Days beginning October 23rd.” One of the young males from above.
Alan chose #5120. An amazing sandstone formation lithified from ancient sand dunes seen while hiking upper Buckskin Canyon in southern Utah.
Diane and Nigel chose #810. They may have seen this balancing rock as we drove by Cliff Dwellers between the North Rim Grand Canyon and Lee’s Ferry when they visited northern Arizona.
Cathy chose #1014. Same pride of lions as above but more of the family.
Rita chose #88. The inside of a rebuilt kiva at Aztec National Monument in New Mexico visited in 2005.
Sherry chose #1625. An unknown mushroom seen along the Widforss trail on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.
Jodee and Bill chose #1816, one of two in a panorama. These sandstone cliffs were seen while hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa in 2010.
Jo chose #9564. The day after closing the lodge to guests on the North Rim all the furniture stacked in the auditorium for winter. Kind of sad.
My choices from a road-trip adventure in October 1996 camping along the Snake River in Idaho. Different truck and camper, younger me, and note those fuel prices.

Do you have a favorite this week?
Thanks for the memories
Dear Gaelyn, I am here EARLY this week! I’m fascinated by the [reconstructed] kiva. Is it a type of Mexican dwelling or a tomb? I love the sandstone formations and LOVED seeing the Drakensberg mountains. (even though I was in the foothills only yesterday. LOL!) Thank you for the interesting posts always. My number for next week 8145. Have a great week. Jo
It is believed that kivas were used for spiritual purposes by Native Americans in the Southwest. How lucky for you to walk in the Drakensbergs. #8145 for next week.
my friend used to live at the foot of the Drakensburgh mountains and has often told me about visits to Kruger so this selection is lovely to see. sad to see seasonal close down. always best to look forwards.
Memories.
I have many memories of rafting the Snake River and Hell’s Canyon in 1953 with my Dad and uncles. They bought a WW-11 surplus army raft loaded it and off we went for a 10-day adventure. It was an adventure they had wanted to do since they were teenagers growing up in Moscow, Idaho and Spokane.
Love your old Ford. I still have my 71′ F-100. 302″ V8 & ‘3 on the tree’, and that camper looks like my first one. A light 8-footer, though I never had it on the F-100.
Thanks for the memory prods.
I’ll bet rafting the Snake was awesome. And who doesn’t like an old Ford. That one, color-wise, was my favorite.
Thank you for leaving a comment. Both the Drakensberg and Kruger are special places.
Lots of lions! North Rim getting a breather. Pretty Idaho road trip pictures AND gas prices that we’ll NEVER see again!! Have a good week! #1492
Next to elephants, lions are my favorite animal on safari. Saw them almost every morning and evening absorbing the heat from the pavement where they would sleep. #1492 for next week.
Can’t believe I’m actually looking at this on Friday!!! I’m usually days late 🙂 Love the wonderful lions. Perfect that Sherry got a cool mushroom pic as she’s always finding them in her hikes. Your one Snake River pic looks a lot like Lee’s Ferry. The sandstone cliffs are so dramatic!!
#1151 for next week please.
Don’t feel bad, I’m usually days behind reading blog posts. I too thought the Snake looks much like the Colorado, now that I’ve seen both. #1151 for next week.
Past my bed time, but if I do not reply tonight another day will run a ay with me. Exceptional set of photos and off the top of my head the only balancing rocks that I can think of in in Zimbabwe. Favourites have to be the lions, every day I want to get in the car and drive to one of the game reserves, a big slice of me just has never left Africa. 1510 for next week please. Enjoy your weekend and relax, you are retired now. 😍
Hugs from us both, Diane and Nigel.
Thanks. In France you have hoodoos called demoiselles coiffées. I would ride with you on safari any day of the week. Sigh… #1510 for next week.
Loved the Idaho photos. I’ll choose 1987 the year I mapped Hells Canyon along the Snake River
Thanks. That must have been fun. #1987 for next week.
I either didn’t get one over or it didn’t take. One way or another, such issues with Cox co, there will be a last straw and I get different service for email. Wow to see so many lions, and in the road! Makes me wonder how acclimated to humans. Next week #5512 please Gaelyn. Anytime UT/AZ border sights are mentioned, as recently, I have memory of meeting brother off AZT-Arizona Trail on that date. I don’t really remember dates, I’ve kept events/timeline long time. Gypsy
I thought I’d stop breathing when the first lion strolled past, but then so many more. They don’t seem to see cars as threats or prey and people are not allowed out of their vehicles. Two-leggeds could be food for many wild animals. #5512 for next week.
I love the Snake River road trip photos. A long time ago in some ways but not in others.
6209 for next week. Have a great week.
Thanks. An adventure I’d almost forgotten about. #6209 for this week.
LOVE every single one of the lion pictures and am so envious of your seeing them in the wild. Just wonderful! The cliffs of South Africa are beautiful. Also really like your pictures along the snake in 1996 but of course I love water and pictures of water. Had to sigh at the gas prices. My red mushroom is a favorite. Based on the size of the rock next to him, he was a big one. I’ll try # 4861 the temperature outside and inside when I woke up this morning.
Thanks. Sure was a thrill seeing lions. I believe the mushroom was a rather large bolete. Only about five degrees warmer here this morning. #4861 for this week.
Hi Gaelyn Wow !! plenty of Lions around there, Love those two sitting in the middle of the road, needless to say I would be very scared of them. The shot of the sandstone formation at Upper Buckskin Canyon is pretty impressive also. I think my fav in fact are those two Lions.May I have no 1042 for next week please. Stay safe and I hope you had a good weekend.
I certainly had respect for the lions but felt safe inside the truck. #1042 for this week.
