This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 10 readers including sedimentary rocks, camels and giraffe, and incredible patterns in nature from around the world.
Diane and Nigel chose #3007. A lovely Grand Canyon view from Parrissawampitts Point along the Rainbow Rim trail when hiking with friends Jim and Gayle on 6-11-15.
Jeff chose #1971, “the year Arches National Monument became a National Park.” 2010, the year I first visited South Africa and hiked the lush green Drakensberg Mountains.
Cathy chose #6001. A look at Willis Creek off the Skutumpah Road in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Utah. Keep meaning to go back. Maybe she’ll go with me.
Rita chose #0249. Giraffes have incredible faces. Seen at Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa 1-26-14.
Alan chose #955. Textured walls along the Toadstools trail I believe are ancient mud deposits.
Sue chose #2222. The above shot might be more her thing as a soil scientist. And she’s probably seen at least some of metal sculptures by Ricardo Breceda displayed at Galleta Meadows Borrego Springs, California.
Sherry chose #5902. She sees marvelous water birds while kayaking in the east. Lots of good birding at the Salton Sea in California, but not sure it would be a good place to paddle.
Jo chose #2008. Maybe she can identify this colorful grasshopper seen near her South African backyard in the Drakensberg Mountains I saw while hiking with her son.
Doris chose #9505. A turn in the Orange River called Echo Corner—didn’t get an echo—below Augrabies Falls the day I celebrated my 60th birthday in South Africa.
Sallie and Bill chose #819. Patterns in nature left behind by busy bugs unseen until the bark disappears. Seen along the Widforss Trail on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona 7-28-09.
My choice, the limestone layers and hoodoos seen in the Dixie National Forest’s Red Canyon along SR12 as I drove to Cedar City last month and was almost washed away leaving the WallyMart.

Do you have a favorite this week?
Thanks for the memories.
If you ever see an archived photo that you’d like to see in the next Geogypsy calendar please let me know.
Well I thought I’d have the first comment today by posting at 7:00 in the morning but I was on my phone and I wrote the entire comment and then I tried to post it and got an error and the comment disappeared. So I’m trying this just to see if it will work and I think I’ll come back when I can get on my laptop and post my real comment
Sorry that happened.
Well at work so here goes. That wonderful giraffe face is my very favorite. How fantastic to see giraffes in the wild!! Those Green mountains in Africa attracted me with their lush look. I’m in the Green mountain State right now and they are very Green mountains but they look quite different from those in your picture. I also really like the shot of grand staircase Escalante which is still on my elusive bucket list. I’ll try 4852 for next week.
You still got the first comment. I still dream of returning to South Africa. Yesterday I saw more of Grand Staircase and was awed at every turn in the road, and there were many turns. #4852 for next week.
Those pesky bark beetles are killing a lot of trees! So far on the road trip this year we have travelled 2739 miles.
Bark beetles kill trees in stressed out forests due to a lack of fire. That’s a whole lot of miles. #2739 for next week.
Thanks for the Friday visual treats.
#1357 for next Fridays treats.
You’re welcome. #1357 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, Lovely set of photos and no particular favourite, we love then all. I think this is a Grasshopper in the family Pyrgomorphidae,,often called Gaudy grasshoppers. Possibly it is Maura rubroornata ?
608 for next week please. Hope you have a good weekend working. Hugs Diane and Nigel
Thank you for ID. I figured you might know. #608 for next week.
My favorite pic this week is the 1st one. As always love all the links so I can read about all the interesting places you’ve been. I’d like to climb that Dry Park fire tower. Climbed the one near Jacob Lake. What a treat it would be to have an outing with you! Maybe we will meet up some time!! Next week #4207
Thank you. We should get together sometime. If nothing else I should be staying a little while down your way this fall once the season is over. #4207 for this week.
Dear Gaelyn where to start commenting on these beautiful images. The Drakensberg “Valley” is not green now in winter but still beautiful. Sherry calls them the green mountains: ironically, one of the paintings in the art shop which I ran for my friends, the artist, Steve and his wife Estelle, was called “Green Mountain”. I LOVE the patterns in the bark and also the mud patterns on Toadstool Trail. And no, sorry, I can’t ID the grasshopper. It is colorful though. I love the giraffe and the sculpture of the camels. And the Salton Sea sunrise. All so beautiful. Thanks for sharing these lovely stories. My number for next week is 2205 (the time my guest arrived at my guest house this evening! ) Have a great weekend. Jo
Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to comment. I believe Diane IDed the Gaudy Grasshopper. #2205 for next week.
Love the artwork of the bugs under the bark! Beautiful green views from different countries, what a treat. Hard to beat the sweet giraffe though 🙂

Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Stay safe.
Thank you. Foto Friday is a way for me to actually see my old photos and enjoy the memories that go along. Glad you all play. #99 for this week.
Great photos all, I especially love the Dixie National Forest Shot. Something about pine trees, red rocks, and hoodoos.
Keep on keeping on!! 5285 from random dot org
Thanks. The green and red rocks do make a nice contrast. #5285 for this week.
For sure, those insects have made incredible textures on “our” tree… I wouldn’t have known what did that! Beautiful views in our national parks and in South Africa!…. I had to smile at the thought of paddling in the Salton Sea… you would need a clothespin for your nose! But the birding *was* great .
I always thought a rubbing would be cool on the insect patterned trees. It’s not Always stinky at the Salton Sea.
