This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes 10 images chosen by readers featuring elephants, tall South African grasses, and the Bryce Canyon welcoming committee.
Jo chose #5103 “an amount in my booking documents which I cannot reconcile.” Hope that problem is solved, or maybe I could send some elephant help her way. Of course an animal she knows from her home country of South Africa. This shot from Kruger National Park taken 2-19-14.
Alan chose #3170. He likes trees and photographs them all the time so should appreciate this shot showing mistletoe in a Mesquite tree seen along Palm Canyon trail in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park California 1-8-15. Sadly, mistletoe usually kills its host eventually.
Rita chose #7776. A water hole is one of the best places to watch wildlife while on safari in South Africa, or anywhere for that matter if you have patience. This shot taken 3-7-14 in Addo Elephant National Park.
Diane and Nigel chose #904. This shot of Lake Powell from spring 2009 is the fullest I’ve seen the reservoir since then. With decades of drought the lake is currently down 135 feet from full pool.
Cathy chose #0008. A significant highlight of making photos was shooting the annular solar eclipse from the North Rim Grand Canyon on 5-20-12.
Lisa chose #1640. The Drakensburg Mountains in South Africa are lush and green due to the rain and snow fall. Though did manage to stay dry on the Sterkspruit Falls trail in March 2010.
Jeff chose #8205, “regular season games my Padres finally became the last team to pitch a no-hitter.” Different kind of games going on with these youngsters at Addo Elephant National Park a couple days after the above shot.
Jodee and Bill chose #1739. An artsy shot from the Drakensburgs.
Doris chose #6857. I love these kinds of curvy drives through southern Utah redrocks. What better than through the Cockscomb along SR89 between Kanab and Page, Arizona taken 7-21-15.
Sallie and Bill chose #818. The Widforss Trail, a favorite, on the North Rim is mostly forested with peaking views of Grand Canyon.
My choice for Foto Friday Fun, the welcoming committee wasn’t paying much attention to me on the final drive to my RV site at Bryce Canyon.
Thanks for playing along. By leaving a number from 0001 to 9999 in a comment a corresponding numbered photograph, and usually a memory, will come from my many decades of photo archives.
Do you have a favorite this week?
I enjoy your posts. I hope your trip back to work goes well for you! #4444
Thanks. First days of work are beating my butt, especially at elevation, with snow, and this morning 21°F. #4444 for next week.
Hope your first week of work is going well. #2218 For next week please. my service number at the local Honda dealer to have a roof rack installed.
Thanks. This first week was a killer just trying to breath at 8000 feet, below freezing mornings, with snow yesterday and 21° this morning. #2218 for next week.
Looks like Elephants are popular this week Gaelyn and they are my favourite animal, apart from dogs of course. Favourite this week is the view over Grand Canyon at the Widforss Trail. Good luck for your season at Bryce. Stay safe and have a great weekend. No 2993 for next week please.
I too love elephants. Rather large for a pet though. 😉 I’ll spend this weekend still unpacking and settling in. #2993 for next week.
Hello Gaelyn, thank you for the collection of images. I have reconciled the amount – into my bank account, so I am happy! My absolute FAVE is your solar eclipse image. I also love the artsy shot of while you were in the Drakensberg. Did you do one trip with Joan to the Berg and a later hike with John? Re Sterkspruit falls: Many years ago Steve the artist whose art I used to sell , met a woman who said her very young daughter had slipped off the falls and drowned in front of her parents. He was so touched by this, that he painted the girl as she would look 20 years later. It was the only “nude” painting Steve did. The girl is sitting on a rock, facing the falls with her back to the person viewing the painting. Her beautiful chestnut hair cascades down her back and she has no clothes on. It’s very tastefully done. I sold many prints of this painting over the years that I managed The Art Box. A fence has been erected around the falls since the little girl fell. Lo and behold, in 2018, a film crew made a movie in the Central Drakensberg. The crew asked the paramedics to hide in the bushes and the lead actor, a handsome young man from Pretoria, despite warnings from the paramedics (who are local), climbed over the railings to pose on the rock. He slipped and fell to his death! My number for next week please:1844 (the time here in SA on this Friday night1) Have a great week. Jo
Joan and I arrived at the Bergs a few days before John and I hiked so we took short walks from camp. We stayed at the falls overlook deck. That’s a sad story, both of them. As a Ranger I see people go over rails all the time and just don’t get it. #1844 for next week.
I absolutely love #0008. If any followers haven’t seen the link Gaelyn provided under that photo, please check it out. Gaelyn those are the most amazing “Ring of Fire” photos!! Not to mention you took them from by beloved North Rim 🥰.
Thank you for sharing your stories as always! Next week #5860
Thanks so much. The eclipse was a fun experiment that worked. #5860 for next week.
Uh oh! I must have missed last Friday. Darn. Well clearly today is elephant day and I love it. They are SO BIG! I can’t imagine being as near to them as you were. Love your pictures of them. I’ll take 4567 for next week.
I hadn’t read the other comments and your replies. I’m amazed at you – 8000 feet, snow and 21 degrees. I don’t think I love anything enough to experience those things.
If I think about spring at this elevation next year please shoot me.
When an elephant walked by our rig they tower over by three times. Yet I think of them as gentle giants. #4567 for next week.
The elephants have to take pride of place, such lovely animals. Wow Lake Powell is really low, 135 feet is a mighty long way. Sounds like your first week was not the best it can only improve. 1604 for next week please. Have a good weekend, warm hugs, Diane and Nigel.
I thought you’d like the elephants. It’s still snowing. #1604 for next week.
A nice set of photos. I’m having a tough time deciding on a favorite – I love both the north rim and the Utah red rocks pictures. Stay warm, hope you have lots of propane.
Thank you. The SW is beautiful all around.
I hope your first week back treated you kindly. The elephants are adorable and majestic–a tricky balance, but they manage it magnificiently. The shoadows on the Lake Powell photo make that landscape *pop*. Very cool! This year will not even come close to those levels. 7725 for next week please!
I’m beat and cold but otherwise will survive. Still acclimating to altitude. Going to be an extremely dry year unless we get exceptional monsoons. #7725 for next week.
Nothing more beautiful to me than wild grasses so I love my pic!! And so many elephants this week, what a special treat for all of us.
#923 for next week please
I too love to see the sun shimmer on tall grass. #923 for this week.
I love the elephant photos this week. The first elephant looks like he dumped a load on the road. Kind of rude.
2846 from Random dot org.
Not only dumped in the road but the protected dung beetles will be on it very soon. #2846 for this week.
As usual all fun photos. The Mexican peso has dropped to a $.05 USD For next week I’d like 1982 (19.82) the exchange rate as we crossed into Mexico yesterday.
Thanks. OMG! Has the rate ever been that low before? #1982 for this week.
Loved our beautiful view , but oh those elephants (there was a great one in this weeks FF too that I forgot to comment on!) I just can’t get too much of these amazing animals!
Thanks. I could watch elephants for the rest of my life.
