This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 13 readers including a lot of firsts, several panoramas, and a variety of canyons.
Jim and Diana chose #2047, “the time of the next Starlink launch on Sunday.” Ancient sand dunes later lithified into sandstone then carved by wind and water left behind this rock Toadstool launching into the sky seen at White Pocket Vermilion Cliffs National Monument during my first visit 5-28-15.
Diane and Nigel chose #2602, a three-shot panorama. A sunset view from the Grand Lodge verandah North Rim Grand Canyon National Park. Rangers get paid in sunsets.
Rita chose #2220. Presumably ancient hand and toe holes to climb the 20 foot spillway to a tank, or possible pool of water, in Banshee Canyon seen along the Rings Loop Trail near Hole in the Wall campground Mojave National Preserve, California. I happily didn’t have to climb them and instead braved the metal rings further into the canyon.
Jodee and Bill chose #3421. One of the things I love most about camping in beautiful places like the Alabama Hills is waking up to the glory of morning light—occasionally sunrise—where I watched the Eastern Sierras greet the day near Lone Pine, California.
Cathy chose #1026. Same canyon view as above but under different conditions. This shot taken 5-16-15, the second day the North Rim was open for the season, kind of freaked out visitors who arrived in shorts and flip-flops.
Sue chose #666. My first hike in Buckskin Gulch slot canyon revealed the power of water to carve sandstone then leave that little stick behind in a hole located far above my head.
Jo chose #2500. I love trees, their also sculpted look, and a root wad from a fallen tree reminds me of the skeletal shapes of deciduous trees in winter without their leaves.
Doris chose #312, a two-shot panorama of the Virgin River canyon in Zion National Park, Utah. My first, and so far only, hike up the Narrows through this water carved canyon 9-2-09.
Sherry chose #227. From my first rim-to-rim Grand Canyon hike in 2008, I paused along the Bright Angel trail above Indian Garden looking back where I’d hiked two days before from the North Rim. The trail seen below leads to Plateau Point and I hadn’t hiked it, yet.
Yogi and random dot org chose #6916. I know he BBQs, maybe not in February or with a seagull in his Oklahoma back yard. This shot was taken in the campground of Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa.
Sallie and Bill chose #327 a three-shot panorama. When camping at Marble View on the Kaibab National Forest this northern view shows the East Kaibab Monocline where the rock layers dip down far to the right.
Lisa chose #268. A five-shot panorama taken from the Hopi Valley Trailhead looking SW to NW along Kolob Terrace Road in a lesser traveled area of western Zion National Park, Utah.
Jeff chose #911, “as I give a Shout Out to all First Responders.” I honor them, everyone, and sadly see them working at all national park sites giving aid. That would include Lake Powell as seen above from Wahweap Bay and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area overlook. A four-shot panorama taken 9-10-09.
My choice, pre-sunset over the Chocolate Mountains as seen from my current camp two nights ago. I love the beauty around me but am struggling with lack of signal. Seems I do better in the morning, so this is coming out late.

Do you have a favorite this week?
Incredible photographs yet again. I love the precariously balanced toad stool, and the very narrow canyons. 6494 for next week.
Thanks. I’m still teasing you with SW landscapes to visit. #6494 for next week.
No favourite really this week, just love them all but the Virgin River canyon in Zion is truly fascinating. Nature is wonderful in every respect though sometimes it can also be very cruel. Ha, we can just imagine T shirts and flip flops at the North rim in snowy conditions! 503 for next week please.
Enjoy the weekend and stay safe, Diane and Nigel.
Slot canyons and slots really slam home the power of water. #503 for next week.
Love the photos! My favorite is the Narrows photo – always wanted to do that hike but it’s never worked out that way. There’s something about slot canyons that draws me in. Second favorite is all of the rest – each one speaks volumes in different ways.
Thank you. There’s a sense of power in a slot canyon.
Happy Me! I got Buckskin Gulch!! One of the few red photos this time around. Although I must say there were a lot of panoramas that vied to be favorite. I’ll choose 3421 for the date of my first COVID shot.
You’ve probably been to many of these rocky places. #3421 for next week.
YAY! At last I am back visiting your blog, Gaelyn, My favorites are the three panoramic photos. Please give me 2000. It’s 20h00 hours Friday night right now and I am waiting for guests to arrive at my holiday accommodation. Have a great weekend. Jo
Welcome back. #2000 for next week.
I am new to the blog but I miss our western trips. Question where are all the pictures people are choosing on Fridays!
The number commenters leave correspond with a numbered photo in my archives. Feel free to join in.
So much pretty desert!! We were just talking yesterday about wanting to get back to Alabama Hills. Glorious light on the Sierras!
#2233 for next week please
I too would like to return to the Alabama Hills. #2233 for next week.
May snow ❄ Be prepared for any weather any time of year at the North Rim. The Lone Pine link photos are gorgeous. Love the mountains and the sinking sun. Next week # 0914
Thanks. The Sierras are dramatic up as the canyon is down. #0914 for next week.
Slot canyons, some day I hope to see one in person. Your pictures are so inspirational. #9851 for next week please.
Thank you. I do hope you can visit a slot canyon. #9851 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, such a nice variety of photo’s this week.I love the one of the pre-sunset at Chocolate Mountains,an unusual name for mountains indeed. My fav though is the Alabama Hills. No 9999 for next week please. Hope all is o.k. with you and you are staying healthy and safe.
Thanks. I like the idea of chocolate mountains. #9999 for this week.
Looks like a Starlink satellite dish pointed skyward. That rock must get a good signal. Let’s do 2158 for next week, the time for Tuesday’s Starlink launch…our 17th launch this season!
LOL! #2158 for this week.
Oh boy, oh boy, I can see all the comments now. The rock on top of that first picture looks like it is sitting on its very tip and might fall off any moment. Those hand and toe holds are very interesting., I’d like to try that. Love my gorgeous picture from the Bright Angel Trail. I hope I get to hike it one more time at least though I doubt I’ll go all the way down and up. Also really like your choice this week. So much character in that shot. I’ll try 8823 for next time.
No way I’d climb the hand and toe holes as then I’d have to get back down. Also glad I hiked the canyon when younger. #8823 for this week.
I always love your panorama shots.. I regret we were never able to hike the Narrows in Zion, and so appreciate seeing your picture of it. Enjoyed every picture . #79 next week?
Thanks. Sadly, Zion Narrows are now very crowded. #79 for this week.
The Buckskin Gulch picture of the stick in the hole in the rock reminds me of a tree on my favorite river run. It sits some 50′ above the low water level and was obviously put there by water, but it stretches the imagination trying to puzzle out how it got there and what that stretch of river must have looked like at the time it was placed. So cool! Rita and I had the same idea, so I’ll pick 7777 this week instead.
Nice. I love trying to figure out the power of nature. #7777 for this week.
Thanks for sharing your very good pics.
Thank you for the nice compliment.
Incredible and fascinating pictures in the blog. Perfect shot of the very narrow canyons. Amazing blog
Thank you.
The Virgin River had a lot more water and the Narrows had a lot more people when we hiked it. For next week I’d like 4599, having just paid 459.9 for diesel! Yikes!
Glad I hiked the Narrows before it got so popular. Ouch for fuel at #4599 for this week.
