This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including lots of rim-to-rim Grand Canyon, a Forest Snail, and a Royals Royce. Are you wondering if it’s mine?
Cathy chose #0308. These “Toadstools” made of rock, in this case sandstone of varied hardness, should not be eaten. Yet the hike is short and easy within Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah.
Jim and Diana chose #290, “as how many millions of miles Perseverance flew to get to Mars.” The huge block of rock in the foreground has fallen from above and now lies along the North Kaibab trail. It is ~290 million year old Coconino sandstone, the third layer down from the rim of Grand Canyon. Also the third time I hiked rim-to-rim, this in mid-October with friends.
Doris chose #2832. Considering how few creatures I see in the desert I am always amazed by the plethora of burrow holes. These in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California. They are everywhere, in every desert I explore.
Diane and Nigel chose #1902. A perfect match as they are classic car buffs. And this one is buffed to a high shine. A 1939 Royals Royce Phantom parked at the North Rim Grand Canyon isn’t what I expected to see in 2010.
Sallie and Bill chose #100. From the first time I hiked rim-to-rim in early May 2008 and saw blooms along Bright Angel trail on the ascent while two days previous it was in the 30°s when leaving the North Rim.
Lisa chose #7986. Just the way I like to see snow, from a distance. Pine Valley Mountains from SR9 headed to St George, Utah, 1-10-16.
Yogi chose #152, a panorama. Another from that first 2008 rim-to-rim hike, entering The Box, a narrow canyon following Bright Angel Creek to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of Grand Canyon.
Jodee and Bill chose #421. One of the rental cabins at Phantom Ranch that I’ve never stayed in. Think way ahead for reservations. There are three ways to get to Phantom Ranch, hike, mule, or boat.
Sherry chose #2121. While camped in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California in 2014, I hiked on Christmas day up Coyote Mountain in search of a snake. I also got this view across the desert to the Santa Rosa Mountains.
Sue got #106 for the number of words in her last comment. Not far from where she lives in Oregon, the Siskiyou National Forest offers amazing diversity of life, including the Forest Snail. This shot from the Cave Creek trail near Oregon Caves.
Jeff chose #5521, “for Cinco de Mayo 2021” and he’s hoping for a SoCal celebration! Should have been a celebration for me to be up for this glorious sunrise over the Indian Ocean, South Africa.
My choice, last light on the Kofa Mountains from my last camp. Wonder what the next view will bring.

Do you have a favorite this week?
Wow…that rock looks like some of the stuff the Mars Curiosity rover has photographed. It’s even the right color. 🙂 Let’s do 2047 for next week…the time of the next Starlink launch on Sunday.
Three kinds of rocks, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, and I think that’s throughout the universe. But I could be wrong. #2047 for next week.
That rock on the North Kaibab trail. has to be a favourite today but the South African sunrise and the Rolls are not that far behind. Rolls and Bentley are fabulous cars but not quite what we would buy for ourselves but my Dad might well have done. We like old cars, but they need to be sporty and I have to admit that we have a thing about German cars of which of course Porsche is one.
2602 for next week please. Have a good weekend, hugs Diane and Nigel.
I am surprised the rock is first for you. It’s a pretty car that I wouldn’t want. Think your sports car are more fun. #2602 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn Looks like I missed commenting on last weeks post Sorry!! Love the Rolls Royce car ,such luxury. and the South African Sunrise is outstanding Would like no 2220 for next week please.Have a great weekend.
It happens. #2220 for next week.
Toadstools is a fun little place to hang out a while. I stayed at Phantom Ranch around ’94 doing a Rim to Rim. Another special place with Canyon Magic. Thanks for sharing! Next week #1026
Phantom Ranch is its own club, cause everyone there had to work somehow to get there. #1026 for next week.
Hi, Gaelyn: I am certain that I saw the 1939 Rolls Royce back in 2010 when Nancy and I were Volunteers up there. I always enjoy your photos but especially ones of the North Rim area. Hope you are finally dug out from the snow!
Thanks. It was always a treat when the classic cars showed up at the canyon. Thankfully I’m in the desert so no snow.
Doesn’t sound like Phantom Ranch is a place I’ll ever see myself so fun to get to see it here! Funny that the little snail is the sole critter representative in this week’s collection 🙂 All are a beautiful reminder of how much there is to see and enjoy “out there”!
#3421 for next week please.
I could see you doing a river trip to Phantom. #3421 for next week.
I knew right off that Rolls Royce wasn’t yours. Doesn’t have a big camper on the back.
But it could tow a trailer. 😉
Kinda cool I got an Oregon photo in the midst of all the South Africa and Utah photos. And a snail is just about right for today. I never get bored. Always have lots to do. Today I am bored. Quilting is boring. Knitting is boring. It is too cold to do yard work. I am sick of the internet. The news is really boring. I tried listening to a book. Boring. Maybe I should go play the piano….boring. LOLOL You have NEVER seen me like this and neither have I. Maybe because I woke up at 3 AM. OK….gotta pick a not boring number….666
Sunrise over the Indian Ocean is my favorite this week. How about #312 for next week, the date I get my second covid vaccine.
Sometimes it is worth getting up early. #312 for next week.
I only get bored when I want to, and that’s OK. I give permission for that. Hope today was better. #666 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, at last I am able to read your post and comment. I’d like 2500 for next week please. Have a great week. Jo
Hey, hey. Welcome back. #2500 for next week.
Wow that is some snazzy car. Bet it got a lot of attention. Love the snail and the beautiful Indian ocean. The phantom cabin is cute. I’ll try 227 for next week please.
Can you imagine towing with that Rolls? #227 for next week.
My ethnocentric self is always amazed at photos of beaches with the Indian Ocean. Love the Rolls Royce also.
Random dot org says 6916 for next weej,
A beach is a bitch. #6916 for next week.
I always love to see those brave desert flowers blooming away in spite of less than ideal conditions , so that was a great “choice “. A nice selection of beautiful views and hikes today, perfectly summed up by your last picture and caption. May you always have a beautiful next view ! And thank you for sharing the ones from your memory bank! 327 next time?
If it grows in the desert, it’s a survivor. Thank you for your always lovely comments. #327 for this week.
I like the 421 Phantom Ranch Cabin pic the best.
Thanks.
I love the desert in the spring! It’s surprising that so many of the otherwise neutral desert plants put on a show come springtime. I hope we get more rain this year than last, but that’s a constant refrain. Number 268 for next week please!
Spring seems a surprise in the desert when green and blooms appear. #268 for this week.
I’ve enjoyed your Anza Borrego view several times when visiting The Snake and friends.
For next week I’d like 911 as I give a Shout Out to all First Responders.
And I’m feeling remiss about not returning to AB for so long. #911 for this week.
