This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 13 readers and ranges from the depths of Grand Canyon to snowy heights of the Kaibab Plateau, South African wildlife, plus first and returning visits to amazing places.
Jim and Diana chose #321, “our appropriately assigned area code here on the Space Coast of Florida.” Lift-off! I watched rockets take off as a kid, man walk on the moon, and yesterday Perseverance land on Mars. I have several photos of myself with arms outstretched as if to lift-off mostly taken in amazing places I am excited to BE. One of those places was watching sunset from Plateau Point within the depths of Grand Canyon the second time I hiked rim-to-rim in 2009. (That’s were my photo is.)
Cathy chose #1226. Colorful and swirly sandstone makes White Pocket feel like walking in an ice cream sundae. My second visit there shared with friends.
Diane and Nigel usually choose a number centered around the date but forgot last week so I’m giving them #2122. Living in France there seems to be nothing like the crazy sandstone features seen at White Pocket and they are intrigued. Bill and his dog Sasha took me the first visit.
Yogi and random dot org chose #1156. The photo label reads “Greenstem paperflower” and I was too lazy to verify that ID. I barely remember seeing it camped at Toroweap where I visit for the view—keep scrolling—more than flowers.
Doris chose #2728. As if Grand Canyon is dramatic enough, then add a cloud dance. How I relished the work days spent roving on the Walhalla Plateau, especially with a show like this.
Jennifer chose #632. Havasu Falls requires a hike with permit into Havasu Canyon on the Havasupai Indian Reservation, the people of the blue-green water.
Sue chose #1996, the first time camped with pickup and tent on the east side of the Waterpocket Fold. A place with amazing stratigraphy, as is the Grand Canyon. From my first visit to Toroweap, looking down 3000 feet to the Colorado River just upstream from Lava Falls rapid.
Jodee and Bill chose #1112. Cruising SR89A across House Rock Valley towards the snowy Kaibab Plateau, returning to summer work the Grand Canyon’s North Rim the end of April, 2010.
Lisa chose #7652. While on safari in Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa I noticed that some wildlife didn’t run and hide at our approach. This Hyena mom with older pups were in no hurry and reminded me of coyotes who hang out along roads looking for handouts.
Rita chose #1908. A close up of an old road grader used along the always rough Toroweap Road. I added the panorama shot of the entire grader to put this in perspective.
Jeff chose #218, the date he’s scheduled for the second COVID vaccine. This panorama was taken the date of Cinco de Mayo, 5-5-08, looking up from the Bright Angel trail. My first time hiking Grand Canyon rim-to-rim on day three.
Sherry chose #3521. Taken in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, Utah during a way too quick trip to several parks the end of September, 2015.
Sallie and Bill chose #222, “my daughters birthday!” This was taken the month of my birthday March, 2010 during my first visit to Kruger National Park, South Africa. Why did the Rock monitor lizard cross the road? To get to the other side. (Sorry, sometimes I just can’t help myself.)
My choice for this week’s Foto Friday Fun, a recent sunset over the Chocolate Mountains seen from my MST&T Road BLM camp near Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.
The new movie “Nomadland” opens today. I want to see it but don’t subscribe to any movie things online. Let me know what you think if you watch it. No, I am not in it, I just live like that.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment.

If you’re a new reader—or commenter—please feel free to introduce yourself. We’d all like to know who you are.
Awesome photo! It looks like the clouds’ arms are outstretched! Let’s do 290 for next week, as that is how many millions of miles Perseverance flew to get to Mars. 🙂
Thanks. It was exciting to watch the landing. #290 for next week.
Must have been a tough job driving that road grader. #2832 for next week please.
I can’t even imagine operating all those wheels and levers. #2832 for next week.
I never get tired of those Grand Canyon views. Fell in love my first trip out from back East in the 90’s. #0308 next week. Have a good one!
I know what you mean. Friends gave me Grand Canyon for my birthday in 2006 and the love affair continues. I miss that big ditch. #0308 for next week.
Just tried to comment on the phone and it said I had to log in to Gravatar then it kicked me out!!
Sorry no number but yes you are right, I go with the date so you got it perfectly, thankyou. 1902 for next week please.
Love the shot of Sasha and even more special that we have met her. The shot of the dancing clouds over the North Rim though have to be the favourite, having said that, the photos taken in RSA are always tops.
Habe a good weekend and keep safe. Diane and Nigel.
I thought you’d remember Sasha. #1902 for next week.
We got a huge looking lizard crossing that road! Let’s look at an early photo next time..how about 100. Loved Canyonlands , so enjoyed that memory a lot. …. I just bought the Kindle book “Nomadland” after reading Yogis review… and thought of you immediately. (From his review, not the book, it’ll take me awhile). Was surprised to find It’s a true book not a novel…you should be in it! (We won’t be going to the theater any time soon so the book will have to do for now.)
I doubt I’ll see the movie for a long while. Interested in your review of the book. I know of but don’t know these people. #100 for this week.
Rowing through Lava rapid in a little raft was one of the most exhilarating, terrifying things I’ve done. It doesn’t look so bad from up high, though. Number 7986 for next week please!
I loved Lava rapid and after we went through motorized I wanted to turn around and do it again. #7986 for next week.
Well again there are so many really beautiful pictures it’s hard to choose. I love my Needles picture and Havasu falls on my bucket list. also the rock lizard, the hyenas, the clouds over the Grand Canyon. Oh my. I’ll try 2121 for next week.
Thank you. I believe your bucket list is as long as mine. #2121 for this week.
I love the Grand Canyon cloud dance photo a lot. I have a friend who lives in a van by choice and spends his time on various adventures. He was happy to report that Nomadland has a negative take on the lifestyle. It emphasizes the negative and protrays the nomads as people who are stuck in the lifestyle and have to take various jobs to make ends meet.
He is happy to report it because if people found out how much fun it was then everybody would want to do and ruin the experience for everybody. He’s a through hiker and he said after the movie “Wild” came out it really jacked up the volume of people on the trails.
I’d love to see it but not sure when I will.
152 for next week.
Thanks for sharing the review. I agree with your friend about overcrowding yet am also sad that the lifestyle is misrepresented. #152 for this week.
That antique grater is a gem! I always love coming upon old equipment and trying to figure our how it worked. Love those wide open views across the plateau, such a glorious area. We’ve had a few coyotes recently which I love, not so sure I’d feel the same about Hyenas!
#421 for next week please.
Talk to Diane about Hyenas. #421 for this week.
Love the photo I got, but I think I loved Sherry’s photo more. The Needles is a great place, with fabulous hikes. I hiked back to the Courthouse, I think it is called that, when camped at the Apache campground. It rained buckets and lightning struck all around us. Quite a scary time for sure, with lots of hiding under a rock during the lightning storm and praying no flash flood would get us before we got back to our camp. Of course, once back there, our sleeping bags were soaked and the ice chest was floating in groundwater all over our site. Ahhh more memories!
SW storms are exhilarating and terrifying at the same time under those kinds of circumstances. I love that my photos evoke those memories.
Doris is the bomb! Clouds dancing in Grand Canyon certainly do not disappoint. My choice was taken on Cinco de Mayo 2008. For next week I’d like 5521 for Cinco de Mayo 2021. Fran will be in Ohio … Hope SoCal has a celebration!
And to think, some visitors were bummed by clouds blocking the canyon view. #5521 for this week.
