This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 10 readers including plenty of Southwest rock, a river in Oregon, African rhinos, and my Senior High School photo. (OMG I was young!)
Rita chose #9218. Quaking Aspen and the Grand Canyon are not an easy combination to find as the rim of the canyon isn’t quite the right environment. I hunted for several seasons hoping to catch that fall color against the warmth of the canyon layers.
Diane and Nigel chose #101. My Senior year class photo from 1971, where it all started when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up. “A gypsy”, and the rest is herstory.
Jennifer chose #2021. My first visit to White Pocket in 2015, I think you need a permit now. Ancient sand dunes lithified then eroded into outlandish shapes like this rock toadstool.
Doris chose #7639. On top of the Coconino sandstone, looks like a magical place to camp, but day use only, and impossible to get to (I think). Seen from the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park Point Imperial overlook.
Sherry chose #120, “for the day I hope our future will be come brighter.” I think we all want that. Me too. Would love to have a mug like one of these, just a little oversized, but never found a new one I liked as much as the artifacts. This shot was taken in 2005 when I worked as a Park Ranger at Mesa Verde National Park in the museum.
Jodee and Bill chose #3205. From a January 2015 hike up Palm Canyon trail in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California.
Jeff chose #0204, “the new tentative opening of Anza-Borrego State Park for camping.” Not seen in California, these two rhinos were taking a mud bath in Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa, where I camped in 2014.
Sallie and Bill chose #120, “when we are really celebrating a New Year.” I’m with you on that. And could almost be with you in reality where this shot was taken on the Rogue River in Oregon during the summer of 2007 when I Rangered at Oregon Caves National Monument.
Yogi had a laptop die so no number and I’ll pretend I’m random dot org giving him #63, the amount of words in his last comment. Taken in 2005, the living room of my previous 5th-wheel, while parked in Colorado.
Susie chose #6666. From a Christmas visit to friends in 2015.
My choice is the last sunset of 2020 from my camp near Plomosa Road north of Quartzsite, Arizona.

Do you have a favorite this week?
When did it get to be Friday, again??!!
Marvellous adventures. I really enjoy the geology, and the vistas. Thank you for sharing them. #222
The weeks be flyin’ by here too. Thanks, I know you like rocks. #222 for next week.
I love the quaking aspen against the canyon. I also love cups, the black lines on white background type designs are among my favorites.
I got a fancy new laptop!! Random dot org says 3608 for next week.
I’m glad you like cups because you’ve bought two from me. 😉 Jealous about the new laptop but not all the work to set it up. #3608 for next week.
I too appreciate the quacking aspen against the Grand Canyon. For next week I’d like 253, San Diego is 2.53 inches below it’s normal rainfall so far this year.
Thanks. It’s scary dry all over the SW but that’s a lot. #253 for next week.
Ritas chocie (#9218) was my favorite this week.#1360 for next week please.
Yes, my favorite too. #1360 for next week.
Well, it wasn’t necessarily my favorite but I loved seeing the Rogue River! And the photo of a high school young photo of you was delightful. It is always a bit shocking when we see those photos and try to remember what it felt like to be that young. I will chose 1963 the year I graduated from High School
I thought you’d like the river shot. #1963 for next week.
9pm and I have only just made it to the computer. My days just seem to vanish!! Our photo is also our favourite this week, that is a really stunning shot of you. At least with picking Gypsy as what you wanted to be you have managed to keep to it all of your life. All I ever wanted to be was with horses but that has just got far too expensive. Last time I was on a horse was 25 odd years ago riding with a friend through the Mafikeng Game Reserve. No big cats there, so riding horses meant we could get so much closer to most of the game. We even got close to a baby rhino only a few days old, the rhinos just ignored the horses. A fabulous day out.
801 for next week please.
Stay safe, and I hope that everything calms down in the US soon and normality resumes in every way. Diane and Nigel.
Retirement sure keeps you busy. Glad you spent so many years in the saddle. Riding a safari would be awesome. #801 for next week.
Good morning Gaelyn, well it’s 10-30 morning here and very blustery ,some people don’t like the strong winds we have in Crete but I find them most invigorating. I would love one of the Mesa Verde cups with that lovely decoration so popular among the native Americans. My fav this week is of your Senior class photo 1971. The years pass by too quickly don’t they. No 5183 for next week please. Enjoy your week end and stay safe.
I don’t much care for heavy constant wind either, find it aggravating. Life is too short for that. #5183 for this week.
What a fun variety! Love seeing the rhinos. I’m sure missing seeing folks’ comments here 🙁
#8521 for next week please.
Love the desert landscape as always. Love the view of the aspen on the rim’s edge. Cute pic of our favorite gypsy! Early vision of a lovely life to come. Stay safe & healthy! Next week # 224
Thanks. #224 for this week.
#8521 for this week.
Beautiful, the Aspen and the canyon, great contrast. The rhinos are wonderful. I so envy you’re having seen them in person. Your high school picture made me smile. We were all so young and naive in the 70s with our whole lives ahead of us. We could never have imagined how fast time would fly. I have always loved southwestern Native artwork. The designs on the pottery are exquisite. Since I did so well in the 100s this week I’ll take 175 for next week.
Thanks, I love seeing the variety of photos for this. I am “very” old by that 17-year old’s standards. #175 for this week.
I’d meet you on the Rogue any time (after we get through this Covid thing)! Nice shot of that beautiful River …. I’m late again. If not too much late, maybe #100, which feels like the percentage of humidity here tonight…and tomorrow and the next etc etc. I
I would love to float the Rogue again. #100 for this week.
