This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including South African fauna and flora, Southwest redrock, and the ass end of an elephant.
Jim and Diana chose #1121, “the time of today’s SpaceX launch of a new Sirius XM satellite.” This shot of Waterbucks grazing was the time of day for sunrise while on safari in Kruger National Park, South Africa my first visit in 2010.
Doris chose #9751. This Pied Kingfisher was definitely looking for something to eat at the Mankwe Dam (reservoir) in Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa during my 2014 visit.
Lisa chose #5280. One of many unidentified flowers in the gardens at Forever Resort Badplaas, South Africa. To be honest, I was camped there for the thermal water slides, but the beautiful grounds were nice also.
Diane and Nigel chose #1112. Though the shot is out of focus, they are intrigued by slot canyons so I’m going with what looks to me like a sculpture of profiles facing each other like lovers. Antelope Slot Canyon near Page, Arizona 9-10-09.
Yogi chose #9429. The Wave, another iconic feature in the Southwest. Ancient sand dunes turned to stone. My favorite shot this week. A great hike that does require a permit.
Rita chose #847, one of two in a panorama. Another great hike, now requires a permit but is closed due to COVID, Havasu Canyon, creek, falls, and reservation. This is below Mooney Falls, which requires some bravery to climb down to.
Jeff chose #1221, as the planets align and the days get longer I’m looking forward to a better year!” Hear, hear, I’ll drink to that! And here is the skeleton of an elephant aligned to look up it’s ass (which is how I’d like to see 2020 leaving). Elephant Museum at Letaba Rest Camp Kruger National Park, South Africa 3-9-10.
Sherry chose #7777. Out the door camped in Belly Acres RV Park in Ajo, Arizona doesn’t compare with her lovely views out the motorhome windshield onto a Florida beach.
Cathy chose #9001. As seen along the hike to The Wave may be easier to imagine massive sand dunes lithified, or turned into rock, then sculpted by wind and water.
Jodee and Bill chose #1643. The Drakensburg Mountains are topped with rich black basalt cliffs and slopes covered in green as seen from the Sterkspruit Falls trail hiked 3-14-10 in South Africa.
Sue chose #1976, “for my first year mapping soils.” I’d map at least two distinctively different soils in this location with my back to the Kelso Dunes and facing the Providence Mountains under the moon in Mojave National Preserve, California in February 2016. (Go slow, the road isn’t that bad.)
My choice of a sunset last week from camp on Kofa National Wildlife Refuge. Should be posting about this place next as I’m about two weeks behind real time.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Hi Gaelyn thanks for sharing your great photography once again, Since I like Black Basalt pottery the Dragensburgh Mountains caught my eye, they look pretty dramatic and I would love to be able to see them for real “oh well” My fav this week is “The Wave” at South Western Ancient sand dunes. No 8987
Thank you for coming back and commenting. I had to look up Black Basalt pottery and see why you like it with that smooth matte finish. They are dramatic mountains, but then so is the The Wave. #8987 for next week.
You’ve added places to my bucket list this week. 755 for next week, please!
I love when that happens! #755 for next week.
I was so hoping after I read the opening lines that I would have picked the elephant. Made me laugh out loud. Thanks! I was surprised when I got to the picture, I was expecting skin and all.
I love any shot of yours from Antelope – on my bucket list – but the profiles are terrific.
Of course I also love The Wave picture, also on my bucket list. Not sure I’ve seen a big panorama like that. Just amazingly beautiful. I definitely agree that the view out your door at Belly Acres is a far far cry from my soon to be history view of the Atlantic. Hope you were only there for one night. I’ll try 5972 for next week.
LOL! I actually did a post about animal butt shots from safari South Africa. Much like you, I take pics of everything. Thanks, it’s hard to shoot in the shadowy slot, and to change perspective at the Wave. I never do more than a night or two at any RV Park. #5972 for next week.
I got really lucky this time. Kelso Dunes and the Mojave Preserve are a favorite spot for me. I am sad to consider the fire damage to the Cima Dome area in the preserve. We may go that way again in the coming year. I’ll pick 2014 for a favorite camp at Hole in the Rock.
Thought you’d like that. I like Hole in the Rock also. Haven’t been back in a while, and not since the fire. #2014 for next week.
I love Antelope Canyon pics, including the photo made on the way to the canyon. I’ll be there one of these days.
Random dot org gives me 6459 for next week.
Stay warm, It is bitterly cold and very windy here today. I hate cold wind. Did I ever say that?
Start applying for your permit now. #6459 for next week.
Oh we have to go with ‘our’ slot canyon as our favourite this week that is incredible with the faces looking at each other. Just amazing. 1812 for next week please. Have a good weekend. Hugs Nigel and Diane
I thought you’d like that one. Mother Nature is the best artist. #1812 for next week.
The shots of The Wave are awesome – and I really like the Kofa sunset too. For next week, how about #1219 – today’s date.
Thanks. That sandstone is squirrely. #1219 for next week.
I haven’t seen any patterns like that here, but there are huge sandstone rock formations around the country.
The Mohave National Preserve. Another for my never ending list of places I’d like to see. Next week #3274
Much diversity in Mohave Preserve. #3274 for next week.
Great pictures from Antelope Canyon and The Wave. Even your ‘out of focus’ faces is awesome, such a great place to visit. For next week I’d like 443 the cost of replacing the Jeep’s fuel pump.
Mother Nature is the best sculpture of rock. Ouch, #443 for next week.
Oh I love my pic this week, all the rich emerald green is a balm! Our desert is lovely, but we’re SO dry this year without the greens we’ve had here in the past.
#7047 for next week please.
The desert is dry and cries for rain. #7047 for this week.
I side-tracked to your hike to the Wave photos. Thanks for sharing those. I’ve been intrigued with all those interesting place up at the Vermillion Cliffs. It’s a place I’m not going to get to…so have to live it vicariously. The closest I’ve gotten to that area is the Navajo Bridge, the Paria Hoodoos (hiked) & Lee’s Ferry. Your narration helped me orient myself.
Glad you enjoyed the journey to the Wave. I might not ever make it back there either.
