This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including parks both worked and visited, Drakensburg Mountains in South Africa, and slot canyons.
Bonnie chose #1130. A noon-time shaft of light streaks into Antelope Slot Canyon near Page, Arizona on the Navajo Reservation. Tours required but as of this publication closed due to COVID.
Jim and Diana chose #81. More sandstone walls but this time at Mesa Verde National Park from my 2005 summer season. That big ladder climbs 62 feet into the Balcony House cliff dwelling where I led a tour.
Lisa chose #1791. Monks Cowl camp view of the Drakensburg Mountains, South Africa. A couple days later I hiked into those mountains as you’ll see below.
Diane and Nigel chose #708. My second season at the North Rim Grand Canyon in 2009 taken at the Point Imperial overlook.
Then compare to a recent Facebook memory of my first Ranger job in 1992 at Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Washington.
Cathy chose #1478. Cape Royal, my favorite place for sunsets on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park with the last light shining on Woton’s Throne.
Yogi and random dot org chose #2333. Another perspective of the Grand Canyon, this time from Toroweap’s iconic 3000 foot drop.
Jo chose #4850. Klipspringers, an animal she’s probably seen in her home country of South Africa. These two were in Kruger National Park during my 2014 visit.
Doris chose #2000. Clouds hung over the Drakensburg Mountains while hiking in for an overnight camp.
Sherry chose #9118, her grandson’s birth date. Although she’s been sweltering in the east this summer I hope this snowy scene will cool her off, yet none of this white stuff appears for that special birthday next month. This was my RV window view of the Vermilion Cliffs on February 1, 2016 when I wintered in Kanab, Utah.
Sallie and Bill chose #8192. A small slot canyon along the White Domes Trail in Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada from a January 2016 visit.
Jeff chose #1992, “the last time Comet Swift-Tuttle replenished the debris that creates the Perseid Meteor Shower.” Here I am hiking in the Drakensburg after a downpour rain shower.
My first choice, a Facebook memory from 8-12-18 of sunset over the Date Creek Mountains lighting up SR89 on the Yarnell Hill.
And a second choice from Wednesday when I got lost in my archives for World Elephant Day. Objects in mirror may appear closer. Kruger National Park South Africa.

Do you have a favorite this week?
Everyone of your photos this week are favourites. Impossible to pick one that is better that the others. We could comment on each photo separately, but will refrain from doing so. 1408 for next week please. Have a great weekend. Hugs from us both. Diane and Nigel
Thanks, you are too kind. I’ll admit to getting pickier about the chosen shots. #1408 for next week.
#1478 made my heart sing. Cape Royal. My most beloved special place on our planet. The first geogypsy post I ever read (a couple years ago)was Walhalla Plateau July 16, 2012 which further cemented my powerful bond to this special place. Thank you, as always, for sharing your journey. Next week #2718.
Thanks. I am moved by your comment and didn’t realize you’d been reading for so long. Yet how could anyone not fall in love with Cape Royal. I am long overdue on a visit to the North Rim. #2718 for next week.
A favorite?? What a joke. You have such gorgeous pictures from such wonderful places, it has become impossible to choose. That first one is so amazing I stared at it for several minutes before I could move on. A sight like that is so on my bucket list. I’ll take number 8213 for next time please.
Thanks. I always enjoy your wonderful photos from different places too. Slot canyons are unique and we shall hike one when you get west. #8213 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, Looks like I forgot to choose a number last week.. Great photo’s this week and difficult to choose a fav but you know I like all the Canyon shots. However, my fav for this week is that lovely shot of the Sunset over Date Creek Mountains. No 7938 for next week please. Have a great weekend.
Thanks. I know how you love the canyon shots but it’s hard to beat a good sunset. #7938 for next week.
They are such wonderful photos! I love the one seeing you in action. The canyon, the first one, would make a terrific puzzle!
Thanks. Feel free to make that shot into a puzzle.
Love the elephant in the rear view mirror. Let’s do 74 for next week.
That was close. #74 for next week.
If I ever get to the North Rim, I’ll make sure to check out Cape Royal. #8035 for next week please.
One of the best views from the North Rim. #8035 for next week.
The elephant in the mirror is heart-stoppingly wonderful as is the beautiful Navajo slot Canyon — I send best wishes for the health of all of the Navajo people. very scary news from that Nation. …. I liked “our” smaller slot canyon too — “out West” we are fortunate to have more than one State Park that is a national treasure — as well as all the wonderful National Parks . Loved all your pictures from those parks here and the ones in SA. And Ranger Gaelyn looks pretty darn good in both pictures! That woman knows her stuff!! May I have 80 next week? For my Birthday that somehow seems to be that #.
Thank you. The Navajo Nation has truly struggled through COVID. I am glad you think I know my stuff, sometimes I’m just good at the bluff. 😉 #80 for next week young lady.
Antelope Canyon, Mesa Verde, Cape Royal, Toroweap, et al …. a favorite? They’re all great! Next week I’d like 2001 the last time extreme heat led to blackouts in San Diego. I would have commented sooner, but had to wait for the power to return 🙂
Thanks. Sorry to hear about power out, especially as temps everywhere have been so hot. #2001 for next week.
Dear Gaelyn, it’s ironic that my choice was a klipspringer. I have seen them but last week I was handing keys over to my guests on the farm entrance off the road leading to the Drakensberg; the young man, a townie, pointed to movement in the cow paddock. I looked back and, in the distance a rhebuck was springing and running down to the river. On Thursday Ronnie (my neighbour, landlady, employer, and friend) and I were driving out along this same farm road. In the same paddock at the fence against the main road, were two buck (surmising they are a pair) were grazing in between the cows. This was 10am! They cleared the fence and ran across the road into the neighbour’s wheat lands. A great sighting. How super to see a photo of you under the mighty Monk’s Cowl. I loved the reflection of the elephant in your vehicle rear-view mirror best. My number for next week is 1240. Be safe and have a great weekend. Jo
I only saw a rhebuck once. How exciting. Here it is mule deer and pronghorn, and I’m not usually ready with a camera.
Such good times hiking with John and camping with Joan in the Drakensbergs. Yet still, elephants are where my heart lies.
#1240 for this week.
Yayayay! It took me THREE days to submit the above comment! Whoohoo. Perseverance won out (and a gleam of Internet, LOL!) Jo xx
Thank you for your persistence. And I thought the internet was bad here. After three days I may have given up.
I like Woton’s Throne and the photo of the elephant coming up in your rear view mirror. Random dot org says 7085.
Thanks. #7085 for this week.
So many magical and lovely sights. Especially important these days to remember how much beauty there is in our world, and how we travelers are blessed to have seen so many. Seeing the snow at Vermillion Cliffs is a treat – added to the ever growing list of things I want to see in person 🙂 The elephant is incredible, thanks for sharing.
#938 for next week please
Thanks. I have to believe we will travel again. #938 for this week.
