This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by nine readers including interesting and varied rock, waterfalls from two different countries, wildlife, and a naked man fishing.
Jo chose #5119. A thin rock formation called a fin made by the intrusion of quartz into sandstone millions of years ago and later carved by erosion. This basketball-sized formation was among some of the smallest examples seen while hiking the upper Buckskin Canyon in southern Utah 10-26-15.
Cathy chose #3276. A Black-necked Heron seen in Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa during February 2013.
Jim and Diana chose #95 for a temperature “finally under 100.” Last week they got a different view of Clearwater Valley where much forest was destroyed during the 1980 eruption of Mt St Helens. This shot from twelve years later, when I worked there, shows some regrowth in planted areas.
Diane and Nigel chose #2407. Last light of the day striking cliffs to the east of the Tuweep overlook from the North Rim of Grand Canyon. My first visit in 2010 to this iconic view down 3000 feet to the Colorado River.
Rita chose #7315. A morning view from my RV window past the weather station to the canyon walls of Widforss Plateau during the summer 2014 season at Grand Canyon National Park.
Doris chose #6378. She likes clear views of the sky which I could get with a little boulder hopping in Jumbo Rocks campground at Joshua Tree National Park, California during March, 2015.
Yogi chose #1311. Driving SR89 north of Flagstaff, Arizona travels across some of the Navajo Reservation through the painted desert.
Sherry chose #9108. Because of her hiking experience she’ll appreciate this boardwalk to provide safe viewing of the Orange River and waterfall at Augrabies Falls National Park, South Africa. Just one of many parks visited in 2014.
Sallie and Bill chose #997. A peak at Havasu Falls after a long hike down canyon onto the Havasupai Indian Reservation, Arizona. Camped several nights during this April 2010 experience.
Multiple choices because I can: A scanned print from 1969 along the Illinois River. When barges went by their undertow sucked water away from the beach.
A random #0482 of an elephant, my favorite animal, in Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa on 4-5-14.
And another oldie I just couldn’t resist A friend, no longer with us, hiked with me to the hot springs along the Wind River during the summer of 1997 and proceeded to fish. THE END.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Nice tan line. Let’s do 88 for next week.
LOL! Hope your #88 means it’s cooling off some more.
I like them all. Interesting about the barge sucking all the water from the bank. Fishing naked, I’d worry about the hook!! But he was probably better at it than I am. Random dot org says 3423
Thanks. Scary when the undertow would pull at your legs while swimming. #3423 for next week.
Oh Gaely,I clicked on the Summer of 1997 link to see if “the man” was still unclothed in your story, but got sidetracked when I saw the link about Carson. What a dog. What a companion. I also had a mental jolt of nostalgia when I saw the boardwalk at Augrabies. That same late summer of 2014,Grant and I stood on that exact spot while i took photos. Please give me 5050 for next week please. Stay safe. Jo
Sorry, he was only part of the summer 1997 story. When I met Dale I decided to also get the dog. Carson was in my life much longer than the man. #5050 for next week.
I don’t think I’d like to fish naked! In cottage country, too many end up in the ER with fish hooks!
A great set of photos! It was a week ago I had my eye surgery. That’s why I missed! #7767
Thanks. I don’t fish period. But do love to soak in natural hot springs, au natural. I hope you are recovered from the eye surgery. #7767 for next week.
Once again very difficult to choose a favourite, but we think our shot of the incredible lighting at the Canyon just makes it to the top. Is there ever a bad photo of a sunset, I don’t think so. Pity about the white bum 😊 Just off to follow the link…… Have a good weekend. 3107 for next week please. Diane and Nigel
Beautiful blue black necked heron. Great set of photos but Tuweep … 😍 You’ll always have your fun Wind River memory. Some friends just know how to put their “special stamp” on a moment in time. Thanks for sharing that fun. Next week #3754
Thanks. Tuweep is a special place. But then, so was the Wind River. #3754 for next week.
Never a bad sunset, unless there’s just no color at all. #3107 for next week.
Had to laugh at the fishing picture. Really like my boardwalk picture What a beautiful place. And of course the light on the walls at the North Rim is fantastic. I’d sure love to be in a position to take that elephant picture. But my favorite might be that amazing camping site you had among those boulders. WOW! I’d like 9470 for next week.
Glad to bring a laugh. Maybe we should think of a future journey to South Africa together. Your rig might be a bit big for camping in the Joshua Tree boulders, but there are other options to boondock right outside the park. #9470 for next week.
I was in Kirkland WA on March 18th and able to see Mt St Helens blast from there nearly 200 mi away. I’ve only been back to Mt St Helens once since, wanting to preserve memories of fishing Spirit Lake. As usual all your photos are good, but M.S.H. brings memories, for next week I’d like 0832, the moment when the nations largest horizontal eruption occurred on March 18, 1980.
Thanks. So many incredible stories for the May 18th eruption of St Helens. I’d never seen the landscape before the blast. I am glad my memories can evoke others memories as well. #0832 for next week.
Great colors in the North Rim shot. Hope you have a great week. #8076 for next week please.
Thanks. #8076 for next week.
Ah well, fun photos for sure! I did love the Jumbo Rocks photo, took me back to our time camping there when we hiked the trail to Skull Rock or whatever it is called. It was fairly early and the morning sun was low and bright and the air was perfect. It is a moment that I called a “joy” moment. I was crazy, unreasonably happy at that moment, it hit me like a ton of bricks, hard and bright and beautiful. I was just so very very happy for no reason I could fathom except the light and the desert and the rocks. Moments like that one come rarely and I can never call them in, no matter how good the moment may be. They are a random gift from the Universe. So I’ll pick 1515 for that day in January. Here is what I wrote in the blog about that feeling.
“As I was walking along behind Mo in the morning sunlight, I felt myself slip into a state of wonder that is a bit hard to fathom or explain. I was just so incredibly happy, so very much in that moment, so high on the light and the rocks and the sandy trail in front of me. I hope I can remember that moment at times when I am feeling low or bored with the everydayness of life in general. Moments like that are rare and wonderful. Most of the time I am in good spirits, but this was somehow different. Call it Bliss, I suppose, I was there!”
Bliss is the perfect word for those kinds of moments, they could happen more often but not regularly or we wouldn’t appreciate them as much. In fact, I have felt that at Joshua Tree, and a few other places. Truly a gift from the Universe.
#1515 it is for next week.
I like our choice .. would have loved to have been able to visit that Reservation . Like the red cliffs ..amazing light … and the elephant and … everything. Even the end! Always so fun visiting your Friday collection. # 822?
Thanks. I am happily surprised that you and others still like the Foto Friday Fun. Of course I love dredging up the old shots and memories. #822 for this week.
