This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 10 readers including panoramas, slot canyons, South Africa, and more.
Jim and Diana chose #123, a panorama from 8-31-07. While working as a Park Guide at Oregon Caves I lived/hosted the Siskiyou National Forest primitive Cave Creek campground, 18 sites and never half full. This view of my “yard” from Cave Creek.
Jo chose #2606, a nice entry drive to the Old Mill Lodge where I stayed a night during my second visit to South Africa. The first visit in 2010 I rode an ostrich in the Outdshoorn area and there was way more to see and do.
Cathy chose #3817. The end of the road at Jumpup Point felt like a “Thelma and Louise” moment. But instead of driving off the edge into the Grand Canyon, I set up my tent between those two trees, the only shade around.
Rita chose #4297, one of three in a panorama. The bar at Gelbek restaurant in West Coast National Park in Langebaan, South Africa felt like a transport back in time. Instead of ordering a drink I continued to explore this coastal park full of birds and other wildlife.
Yogi chose #1229, another panorama taken 9-10-09. That’s me on Navajo Bridge above the Colorado River. I stopped here after exploring Antelope Slot Canyon in Page, Arizona. (See the pics below to tease him into a Southwest trip now that he’s retired, and after travel is safe once again.)
Jeff chose #629, “the date our kitchen countertops arrive.” I hope they are put in by now. 5-14-09 was the date of my first hike in a slot canyon, Buckskin Gulch trail winds between walls of water-shaped sandstone.
Diane and Nigel also chose #2606. A favorite time for shooting, sunset to the far right with Earth Shadows from temples in Grand Canyon from the North Rim. Rangers get paid in sunsets.
Doris chose #9142, one of six in a panorama of Augrabies Falls, South Africa.
Pat chose #1632, “the 23-hour clock time now here.” Hope this shot reminds her of the time we experienced this Colorado River view from Walhalla overlook on the North Rim Grand Canyon.
Sherry chose #113, “the number of days I have now been stuck in one place…” Imagine being stuck in a cliff dwelling that long because you couldn’t climb a ladder to leave. The Mesa Verde National Park museum displays tools made by the Ancestral Puebloans who lived there in the past. Under the current circumstances, one might learn a new survival skill.
While searching for your choices I came across some shots taken in Antelope Slot Canyon from my 9-10-09 tour that looked good enough to process and share. Mother Nature is the best artist and the force of water a powerful medium.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Those shots of the slot canyon are amazing and have to be today’s favourite. Having said that we love our sunset and the shot of the Augrabies Falls. Your photos are always the best though. 307 for next week please. Keep safe and have a good weekend. Diane and Nigel
Thanks. I’m happy to have stumbled across the slot shots. #307 for next week.
Thanks for the memory….someone said that before me. I will have # 123 next week. That is the number of days, starting from today, until the US elections.
You’re always welcome. Yea! #123 for next week.
Nice shady spot at Jumpup. Playing with the shadow at Navajo Bridge is cool. Have a good week and hope the park visitors stay Covid mindful for you. Next week #5308
Shade is good in those warm places. #5308 for next week.
Antelope Slot Canyon is major on my bucket list.
Believe me I would love to take a trip to the southwest again. So much I have never seen and so many things I would love to see again. Ironically I have two really good retired friends who both love and want to visit Chaco Canyon. Not going to happen with the three of us, one is a progressive liberal former professor and newspaper editor and the other has his own small oil and gas production company and is very conservative. Somebody might get hurt!!
My number next week is 8771 which is the nine’s complement of my last week’s number.
I hope I’m still around when you do come west. I’d leave those other retired guys home though. #8771 for next week.
Those slot canyon shots are breathtaking, just beautiful. …. that bar in SA looks so welcoming and safe enough that I would have enjoyed sitting in it with a glass of wine (when it was dark, after I explored the area of course!). I would like to play again next week, before I forget #427?
Thank you. Sure glad I rediscovered those slot shots. The SA bar was very British and you’d love the park full of birds. #427 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, I love the Old Mill Lodge and Geelbek Restaurant. And the Nevajo Bridge and mystical earth shadows pic. All are beautiful. Please give me 2800 next week. It’s sum of money in SA Rands (without the third zero!) which I’ll post about now in my own blog. Be safe. Jo
Thank you. I hope those Rands are good news. #2800 for next week.
The pictures of the slot canyons took my breath away. #8223 for next week please.
Glad you liked them. Slot canyons are like that. #8223 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, I love it when Foto Friday comes around if only to see your wonderful photo’s. I don’t have to say I always love seeing the Grand Canyon shots. The bar at Gelbeck restaurant looks really cosy. Favourite this week is the display of the Puebloan tools at the Mesa Verde Nat Park. No 5555 for next week please. Stay safe and enjoy your weekend.
Thanks. I know you love to see the canyon but thought you’d like the museum display also. #5555 for next week.
Jumpup Point looks like a great place to self isolate, and a few more pictures of Antelope Canyon are always welcome. For next week I’d like 1776 as today is Independence Day.
Jumpup Pt would a great place to isolate, just a long slow drive to get there. #1776 for next week, and today.
Well I was all set to say how much I like the South African Falls and of course the beautiful shots of THE canyon and then you put those ones of antelope at the end. Wow wow wow that’s all I can say. I have never been there. It is so on my bucket list. But I understand it’s harder and harder to be able to see them with so many people on the road these days and wanting to do the same thing. Wish I’d gone there back in 2011 when we first started full timing. I’ll have 8712 for next time please.
There are other slot canyons just as nice that are easier to visit. When you come west… #8712 for this week.
