This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including Grand Canyon through the years, South African wildlife, and a little me.
Jim and Diana chose #179. There are three ways to get to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of Grand Canyon, hike like I did the first time in 2008, when I saw these mules another way, and you can raft along the Colorado River from Lee’s Ferry which I haven’t done yet.
Diane and Nigel chose #105. She is so good at close-up shots of birds, plants, and insects. This is a feeble attempt at lichen on dead wood along the Cave Creek trail in Siskiyou National Forest, Oregon when I worked at Oregon Caves in 2007. To give perspective, the pine needles are barely 1/2 inch/1.27 cm long.
Rita chose #1865. She doesn’t like snakes so I hope this Sun lizard doesn’t fall in the same category. Saw these quite regularly around stream crossings while hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa in 2010.
Jeff chose #1890, “year the Sisters of Mercy began medical facilities in northern San Diego.” I was a long ways from medical facilities on the above mentioned hike where I found these small pieces of blue agate along a section of basalt on the trail.
Sherry chose #5820 for the date of this posting. I’ve posted much in the ten summers at the North Rim Grand Canyon and took way more photos than could be shared so I truly love coming across a gem like this. An evening shot before sunset during the end of September monsoon showed crepuscular rays and a touch of cloudy inversion around Oza and Isis Buttes in 2016.
Yogi chose #7321. Almost as good as late light above is the morning light on Grand Canyon’s Angels Gate behind the Deva and Brahma temples. Also taken during September monsoon, this time in 2014, low clouds can be seen in the distance hanging over the San Francisco Peaks.
Jo chose #5010, for the 1st of May when her South African “lockdown restrictions were slightly eased primarily to get our economy back onto its feet again.” Kruger National Park, where this shot of birds and hippos was taken in 2014, is currently open.
Sallie and Bill chose #362, in honor of Foto Friday Fun number’s this week. Another morning shot from the North Rim across Grand Canyon taken the end of June my first season there in 2008.
Doris chose #4755. Look closely in the tall grass for a baby elephant keeping close to Mom in Kruger National Park, South Africa during my 2014 visit.
Lisa chose #60, “for the number of dog and human fingers and toes in the house currently.” There would have been 80 of the same, all human, when this shot was taken in April 1956 of me and my dad in Hinsdale, Illinois. Cool car.
Melissa chose #2782, “for my May daughter Deja, who you are getting to know quite well at Christmas time, lately!” She refers to her daughter ordering my calendar for Mom’s present. But you all may be getting to know this view quite well, taken from the North Rim Grand Canyon looking across Widforss Point to Oza and Isis Buttes under more crepuscular rays during September monsoon 2010.
My choice from Mary’s garden pond are the tiny fishes and a water snake. (Sorry Rita.)

Do you have a favorite this week?
I am on my way to Bryce for the summer. I want to thank all of you for stopping by, reading, and commenting. You may not realize how much you all helped me get through a rough winter. Thank you.
I respect your bravery and look forward to your posts, your stories inspire. May all your dreams come true, Ang.
Thank you, though I don’t think of myself as brave, just living. Hope your dreams also come true.
I love the trike photo…I think we had the same kind. My mom looked out the kitchen window once and saw that I had disassembled mine on the driveway. An hour later, she looked out again and it was back together and I was riding it. Good memories, indeed.
Let’s do #172 for next week,
Thanks. Wonder if your trike had pink streamers? 😉 I couldn’t take it apart today and put it back together let alone then. Good story. #172 for next week.
Flames and a Ford blue oval. 😉
Gaelyn I also struggle with things like lichen and moss, one needs a macro lens for that and I have not got one! Somewhere I have a picture of myself on a small bike but I think mine was a 2 wheeler with stabiliser wheels on the back which came off later when I got my balance right. 605 for next week please. Hope al goes well for your return to Bryce. Take care, hugs Diane and Nigel
My old Fuji camera took great macros but I don’t have a macro lens for the big Nikon. I too had a two-wheeler with training wheels years after the trike. #605 for next week.
Love my picture and the other two of the canyon as well as the great hippo and elephant pictures. I never can choose just one. Envying you going back to Bryce or having anywhere to go or be in any national park at this point. What I wouldn’t give. I was hoping to be in Acadia this summer but so many things have been canceled that I’m not going to be able to. Really bummed out. I’ll take number 1625 for next week please.
Thanks. I have mixed feelings about returning to Bryce. Though I love my job I’m not keen on mixing with too many strangers. #1625 for this week.
All the best for this season. The trike photo is wonderful. #0705 for my granddaughter’s birthday yesterday!
Thanks. #0705 for next week.
I am excited for you to be returning to Bryce. You have spring again and the chance to see mammals that usually hide. If you are fortunate enough to “camp” near last years spot you could have wonderful views for your quarantine. An elk visit would be so perfect.
I have mixed feelings about returning to work. Should be parked in about the same location as last season. Would love to see an elk up there.
Good luck at Bryce! Number 1405 for next week (the last day of online schooling!).
Thanks. I’m almost there. #1405 for this week.
You have such great shots of the Grand Canyon!!
next week is 713 which I like from random dot org. It is one less than Babe Ruth’s career number of home runs. I also thought it could be a prime number but no, it’s factors are 23 and 31.
Thanks, it’s hard to take a bad shot of the canyon. #713 for this week.
More fabulous shots of your canyon, but the Bryce photo is awesome. Next week I’d like 3550 the number of jigsaw puzzle pieces we’ve placed during the lockdown.
Thanks. #3550 for this week.
Nancy and I wish you a great season at Bryce. I really enjoy your photos but especially those from the North Rim as they always bring back memories of our years of volunteering up there.
Thank you both. I miss that big ditch.
Today is a sad day for us, so I’m gonna chose my photo for my favorite. Deja’s precious kitty, Animal crossed over the rainbow bridge yesterday and that is the image I think of as greeting her along her journey.
I only have one more may birthday and it is Deja’s Daughter, Arya. May I please have 2114 for my sweet Granddaughter? I wish so much I could hold her in my arms and cry together, my poor little darlin!
Thank you, Gaelyn, your lizard and snake comments were so sweet! We need more loving souls in the world.
I am so sad about the kitty. It’s hard to loose our fur babies. #2114 for this week
Hi Gaelyn, Love that piece of blue agate Not sure if I mentioned that I collect rocks, minerals and fossils. but certainly would not like a snake even as a fossil. All great photo’s here as always Gaelyn. Favourite this week, you’ve guessed it North Rim across Grand Canyon.. No 8934 for next week please. Hope all is well with you .Enjoy your weekend.
Thanks. I’m sure you’ve guessed I collect rocks too, small ones as I have no where to leave them. But no snakes. 😉 #8934 for this week.
That was happy news there at the bottom paragraph! Yay. I was honored to get a morning shot for mine (and I loved both of those early morning pics because I can’t seem to get up and out and about in the morning any more). I really liked the baby elephant hiding out there … and the hippos in the mud! So fun. Happy week at work! # 526 for .my younger granddaughters birthday please?
Thanks. It feels good to be back at Bryce even if I don’t feel like I’m really working like I should. You are fortunate to get morning shots from me. #526 for this week.
