This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 15 readers including South African wildlife, Grand Canyon, and other Southwest sites.
Diane and Nigel chose #1704. While hiking to Sterkspruit Falls at the feet of the Drakensburg Mountains in South Africa, I was surprised to see these mules grazing. Though also glad it wasn’t a large predator.
Doris chose #3. I believe this photo was taken sometime in the 1940s of my Dad’s sister Katie in her nurses uniform.
Yogi chose #4172. This White Rhino had just stepped out of a mud bath in Kruger National Park, South Africa during my 2014 visit.
Lisa chose #1347. A 250-540 million year old Trilobite fossil I bought at a funky rock shop in southern Utah.
Che chose #4220, “for Earth Day.” Doesn’t get much more earthy than the Grand Canyon where this stormy sunset was seen from my RV parked on the North Rim during July monsoon 2015.
Rita chose #5090. You’d never know this shot was taken along the Palm Canyon trail in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Good thing I label photos. I’ve had crystal balls/lens balls for years but never did much with them. Now I see why.
Jeff chose #418, “the start of National Parks week…” Which just isn’t the same when park visits are virtual. Sorry, I totally get that. Your number was one of six in a panorama of Grand Canyon from the top of Angels Window on the North Rim. Taken four days after the 2008 season opening and my first summer season as a Ranger there I was out exploring, in real time (sorry).
Cathy chose #2010. Visited Elden Pueblo in Flagstaff, Arizona on 4-24-10 on the way to the North Rim for the season.
Jerry chose #1127. One of very few successful shots taken in Antelope Slot Canyon near Page, Ariona. In 2009 I had a tiny P&S and now it’s too crowded when it is open to return. Glad I saw it when I did.
Sherry chose #1625. From the same hike to Sterkspruit Falls as above, this Drakensburg Brown Butterfly posed nicely along the trail.
Jo chose #3730. She probably sees Burchell’s Starlings where she lives, although a distance from Kruger National Park in South Africa.
Jennifer chose #4425 for her Mom’s birthday 4/4/25. If you look closely, there are moms in this shot of Zebra taken at sunset in Kruger National Park.
Jodee and Bill chose #2511. Sky Island in the foreground and Cedar Mt on the far side of Grand Canyon taken near Walhalla overlook on the North Rim.
Sallie and Bill chose #1940, “my birth year (I’m feeling my age today). Honey, you are just a babe in arms compared to the 5-6 millions of years for the estimated age of Grand Canyon. Here seen from the North Rim Grand Lodge one morning during monsoon in August of 2010.
Jim and Diana chose #200. From my first rim-to-rim hike in 2008 looking down from Bright Angel trail at boats landing and possibly either dropping off or picking up passengers.
While digging in the archives I looked for past Earth Days and found this from six years ago in Congress, Arizona. Seemed appropriate to share as I’ve been in Congress for almost a month. And although I’m not going back to work yet—still holding breath for May 3rd start date at Bryce—I will be moving today to higher elevation. So check back next week to see where I land. In the meantime, be well, safe, and sane as possible.
Thanks for making and sending the mask Margie

Do you have a favorite this week?
Hi Gaelyn, my favourite is of your paternal aunt, Katie in her nurse’s uniform. I loved that my number brought up a Burchell’s starling. Ironically, it’s the one starling I haven’t seen! I would like the number 3057, the page in my bird book and first digit of the number given to said Burchell’s starling ! Be safe. Jo
My Aunt Katie was a beautiful, smart, and well traveled lady. Too funny about the Starling. #3057 for next week.
The panorama is my favorite this week, but I think my preferences have been influenced by my quarantine activities We just completed a Grand Canyon panorama puzzle and are working on a Bryce Canyon puzzle now. It’s not as nice as visiting the parks in person, but I’m not feeling any rush to get out there. They’ll still be there next year, in 5 years, even 20 years from now. Glad you’ve got a suitable mask now! Number 1112 for next week please!
Thanks. I have many panoramas. Guess I should be in the puzzle business, especially right now. You are right, the parks will be there when you get there. #1112 for next week.
The nurse photo is so iconic!
Amazing spots. That cactus is somewhat, erm, phallic!
I love them all, though.
Good luck with May 3. How about 0305 for next week?
Thanks, I think. 😉 New start date is May 10th. #0305 for next week.
Wow love so many of these shots. You look great with your mask. Love the mules, but yes, I agree good job it was not a pair of predators!! Your aunt is stunning bet she was a good nurse as well.. The favourite though has to be the slot canyon that shot is just magical. 2404 for next week please. Take care and keep cool, Diane and Nigel
Thanks. Only because it’s a pretty mask. Aunt Katie was good at everything, art, cooking, nursing… All slot canyons are magical. #2404 for next week.
Always love shots of slot canyons. Hopefully someday I will get to see one in person. I remember when nurses wore caps. How ’bout #2917 for next week.
If you come to the SW I will show you some slot canyons. My Aunt complained about the hat. #2917 for next week.
Great shots, I love the Antelope Slot Canyon photo. I guess I may not go unless I can find a dead time. I hate being part of a crowd in nature. I guess I am feeling crochety.
Thanks. I think we’re all a little crochety right now. Hang in there.
Nice mask! Let’s do 193 for next week.
Thanks. #193 for next week.
Elden Pueblo!! Nice!! My favorite this week Antelope Canyon. Pretty color combo on your mask. Thoroughly enjoy watching your Gypsy documentary…more than once!! Safe travels as you move higher. Next week #0504 for Melanoma Monday and May – Skin Cancer Awareness Month.
Thank you. Comfy under the Pinyon and Juniper trees. #0504 for next week.
Love the photo of North Rim Grand Lodge, also that beautiful one of the Zebras at Kruger National Park. Difficult to choose a favourite Gaelyn but I will go for the butterfly at Sterkspruit Falls. I love butterflies I hope all is well with you stay safe and enjoy your weekend.
Thanks. Butterflies, like birds, are difficult for me to photograph but this one cooperative.
Posing butterflies, bees, birds and insects are great for a photo op. #6520 for the day I fly to SoCal to drive my truck and trailer back to WA.
If those things hold still long enough, great. #6520 for next week. I’ll bet you’re excited about that.
Almost missed again!! homeschooling the Grandson is exhausting!! but, I Love it! <3 <3 <3 8*)
May I have 5689 in honor of my son, who gave me the above mentioned Grand? Pun really was Not intended!! 8*)
Thank you!! <3 <3 <3 8*)
I’ll bet homeschooling is a gratifying challenge. #5689 for this week.
Well,, “my” picture certainly did put age in perspective! And what beauty it shows, just like all your pictures. Love them all — maybe next to mine, with its special meaning I love the Zebra herd especially. Such wonderful memories, thank you for sharing!!! I have seen pictures of my Aunt who was an RN that look a lot like yours!
I might be too late for next week (and I will not try to claim that my slowness is due to age!) , If I’m not let’s try 5120 by which day I hope you have good news about Bryce. (But if not, you have a great place to boondock).
Thanks. Age is relevant to how I feel, some days older than others. 😉 Crossing fingers for Bryce. #5120 for this week.
# 1128 because Antelope Canyon was the most unique place I have ever visited.
Antelope Canyon is definitely unique, as are all the slots I’ve visited. #1128 for you next week.
