This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 17 readers including Grand Canyon sunsets, inversion and meadows, other Southwest National Parks, and an elephant.
Susie chose #0123 “my son’s birthday.” Birthday’s are a unique event and so was the 2012 annular solar eclipse. I was at the North Rim Grand Canyon for this May event and this is one of the last photos I took as the partial eclipsed sun sunk below the horizon.
Jo, and random dot org chose #4689. An animal from her country of South Africa. This was taken 2-16-14 on a self-drive safari in Kruger National Park.
Diane and Nigel chose #1004. Looking down into a rather dark and little bit scary closed mine shaft at the Eureka Mine in Death Valley National Park, California.
Lisa chose #4356. Sunset as seen through my RV window when I lived next to the cemetery at Crazy Horse RV Park in Kanab, Utah during the winter of 2015/16.
Mary chose #5320. A southern view across Grand Canyon from on of my favorite Kaibab National Forest overlooks, Crazy Jug Point.
Che chose #7001. Another favorite site, for sunset, at Grand Canyon on the park’s North Rim from Cape Royal overlook.
TreDeuce chose #9111. Yet another sunset at Grand Canyon, this time through my RV window on the North Rim.
Jeff chose #1776, “the year our nation gained its independence.” Which we would all like to enjoy again soon. In the meantime, enjoy this one of four and the panorama of Grand Canyon under cloud inversion taken 7-31-10.
Jodee and Bill chose #833. Because of the limestone sinkholes on the North Kaibab, including the North Rim Grand Canyon, meadows with ponds are seen among the forest. This is along SR67 at “Bison Curve”.
Jim and Diana chose #207. This meadow is along the Cape Royal Road on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.
Yogi chose #8034. When I worked an early schedule I’d see the morning light on the temples from the Grand Lodge on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.
Jennifer didn’t choose a number so I gave her #9 for the number of words in her comment. As someone who lived along a lake she understands high water and flooding. This is looking upstream on the Lewis River from where I lived at Pine Creek Work Center on the south side of Mt St Helens. The 1996 flood cause for an interesting evacuation story.
Doris also chose #4356. Called Heart Arch along a trail with other arches in the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, California.
Rita chose #3649. When on safari in Kruger National Park there are small critters to see as well as the Big 5.
Cathy chose #912. The Charcoal Kilns are a historic site in Death Valley National Park, California.
Sherry chose #7000. When she comes west I want to take her hiking in the Upper Buckskin where this is just one of many awesome views.
Melissa chose #1452. A familiar view for sunset from Cape Royal as above.
My choice this week from last summer’s brief work season at Bryce Canyon National Park. There are several scenic overlooks and this is the a view from Black Birch Canyon overlook.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Just love that sunset fro Cape Royal, think this has to be out fave but as always so difficult to choose. I saw mine shafts similar to those in Rhodesia many years ago, not sure if some of them even had a grill over them, it always scared me that and animal or a person could just disappear down them. 1704 for next week please. Take care and stay safe, Diane and Nigel
Thanks. I think the only reason this shaft was covered is because it’s in a national park. I’ve seen plenty with no covers and I know what you mean about scary. #1704 for next week.
Sure wish I was in any one of these beautiful places right now. Sure do hope I get to take you up on your hiking offer. Really sad that all the parks are closed I was so hoping that while here in Virginia I could really hike some of the AT in Shenandoah national Park to take up the endless time on my hands. #1625 for next time please.
Seems like spring would be a nice time to hike in Virginia before it gets hot and humid. Don’t you have trails on the farm? #1625 for next week.
I have three favorites this week, solar eclipse, crazy horse rv park and north rim from cape royal overlook. So I choose #3 for next week.
Thanks, sunset choices for you. #3 for next week.
Another excellent selection of photos. I’ve seen a bunch of old mines. Almost all are blocked off but there are a few that one could get into and I can’t imagine working in them. My mother’s father worked all over the West in various mines. Not me, ever!!
My number for next week is 4172
Thank you. I wouldn’t enter a mine. Don’t mind being underground in caves, made slowly over geologic time. #4172 for next week.
Beautiful sunsets and clouds! I hope you are doing well in Congress until you can get back to Bryce. Number 1347 for next week, please! Stay healthy/sane.
Thanks. Temps are perfect right now but will get too hot to stay over summer. #1347 for next week.
I enjoyed reading about the flood, kilns, the Crazy Jug storm, Alabama Hills (which I recognized shots of AH from this year). I am torn between wanting to travel to all these amazing sites and staying put due to less carbon footprint on our planet, lately, #4220 for Earth Day.
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed the stories. I sympathize with your dilemma yet have always figured my travel lifestyle leaves a smaller footprint than most. A wonderful choice of #4220 for next week.
Spectacular photo’s and such a variety of sunsets, animals and the Canyon Love the one of the Elephant. Favourite this week is Sunset at Grand Canyon North Rim from Cape Royal overlook. Hope you are keeping well. No 5090 for next week’s foto Friday. Stay safe and have a good weekend.
So interesting to read about the Charcoal Kilns. Thank you sharing the story links. Like following those. My fave this week is #0123. North Rim I LOVE, plus solar eclipse & your son’s birthday! Buckskin Gulch needs explored more! Next week #2010
Thank you. I am glad to hear the links are useful for stories from the past. Agree about Buckskin. #2010 for next week.
Thanks. Cape Royal offered many good sunsets. I am doing good. #5090 for next week.
So many great photos to pick from, I’ll collectively select your Grand Canyon shots. For next week I’d like 418 (April 18) the start of National Parks week … this year all National Parks are ‘virtually’ free. Not the same as being there 🙁
No bad views of Grand Canyon. Rather ironic that so many parks are closed for NP week. #418 for next week.
Let’s see if I can comment from my phone. Loved all the photos. Really hzrd to pick a favorite, but love Crazy Jug Point.
Thanks. Nice to know some people can comment from their phone. LOVE Crazy Jug Pt. #1127 for next week.
Forgot to pick a number. How about 1127?
Hi Gaelyn, I loved them all but Heart Arch was my favorite this week. We’re in an extended lockdown which I’m enjoying – not sure what’s in the future for any of us. My number for next week is 3730, generated from Random Number.org. Be safe Jo
Thanks. Heart Arch reminded me of the Eye of the Needle in the Drakensburg but lacking green. Interesting that your enjoying lockdown and Sherry above is going nuts. I’m fine with it too except for not getting back to work. #3730 for next week.
It’s a bit flakey, Gaelyn, but I couldn’t make a decision last week. Isn’t that weird? That’s part of my depression, I think. This thing we’re going through isn’t helping. OK, #4425, 4 – my late mom’s favourite number, as she was born 4/4/25. Thanks for the lovely photos.
I am sorry to hear you are depressed, I know this BS isn’t easy for many. Hope you can get outside. #4425 for next week.
Love the elephant, what a gift to see all those amazing animals in the wild. Really missing all the beauty of northern Arizona. Fun that I recognized the mine at Death Valley and the rock arch at Alabama Hills before I read the captions!
#2511 for next week please.
Thanks. I really want to see Africa again. Also northern AZ. It is fun to recognize places shared. #2511 for this week.
Love the elephant, the Mt St Helens reminder, the places we’ve seen and those we haven’t. Wonderful skies from your RV picture window (I miss ours). How about 1940 fir next week? … my birth year (I’m feeling my age today).
Thanks. It’s fun to share places we all visit with each other. #1940 for this week.
We loved the meadows on our trip to the North Rim. Let’s do 200 for next week.
I think the forest and meadows surprise people visiting the North Rim. Did me on the first visit. #200 for this week.
