This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 12 readers including several signs, quite a bit of Grand Canyon, some South African wildlife, and my old dog.
Jim and Diana chose #221. As a newbie Park Ranger at Grand Canyon I hiked with staff rim-to-rim, north to south over three days, during my first season in 2008. Plus a few times after that. I tend to take photos of signs, this being an important one that tends to get ignored by a lot of visitors. My favorite line when asked about hiking to the river, “Down is optional, up is mandatory.” Look for a link for the first day of that hike in the last comment below.
TreDeuce chose #9797. I love the contrast of golden fall Aspen and the evergreens. This shot from a favorite camp at Marble View on the Kaibab National Forest.
Jo chose #7203, this backwards date of March 27th is her “first day of lockdown in South Africa and two of my granddaughters’ birthdays.” Wonder if the wildlife notice the lack of people? This Mountain zebra was seen in Karoo National Park, South Africa during my 2014 visit.
Che chose #2004. The Colorado River, 3000 feet down, from the remote Toroweap overlook on the north side of Grand Canyon National Park.
Diane and Nigel chose #2703. When they visited Grand Canyon we stopped at the Walhalla overlook but I don’t remember the cloud inversion from that trip.
Jeff chose #72, “the minimum distance in inches for social distancing.” I’d say my brother and I were much closer than that when this was taken in September 1956.
Sherry chose #7865. Another sign, marking the Arizona Trail which runs for 800 miles north to south across the state, and that includes crossing Grand Canyon. I have only done a few miles of the trail not including the canyon.
Yogi chose #8765. Springbucks are an antelope that travel in herds and were quite frequently seen in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa.
Rita chose #3248. Remarkable rock along the Palm Canyon trail in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California.
Sue chose #101, for the number of times she tried to watch the video on my sidebar. I hope she was finally successful and that nobody else has a problem (please let me know). If you did watch it, this is not the dog in the video. This is my dearly departed Carson playing in Cave Creek during the summer of 2007 when I worked at Oregon Caves and camphosted just down the road.
Jodee and Bill chose #628. A view of Grand Canyon looking south from Point Imperial overlook on the North Rim.
Sallie and Bill chose #175, the freeway they recently traveled for many days between Florida and Oregon. No freeway gets you to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of Grand Canyon. You arrive by mule, boat, or like I did the first time in 2008 by foot.
My choice this week: you may remember seeing my truckcamper at Belly Acres in the last post with a fence behind it. This junkyard and impound lot is behind that fence. So what is that cool old car?
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Update: I am currently safely boondocked near Congress Arizona while getting the annual truck maintenance taken care of. Will continue the journey north next week.
Gawd! Another Friday. Did we finish up with the last one.
Unusual location for the communal Aspen.
A Minimum of 6-ft of ‘social distancing’ is mute without the contribution of a mask. And that combo is no guarantee.
I lost my companion, Buddy, last week. He was prone to escape and go look for female companionship and usually didn’t go far, but this time he followed a jogger into the park and wasn’t returned or taken to the pound. Still mourning.
Fifty Ford 2-dr Sedan with desert patina and returning to earth. I suspect I conceived my first son in a Hotrod Fifty like that one… or was it my Mom’s beautiful 57′ Chevy Bel Air wagon… LoL!
6363 for next week, Gaelyn
It is difficult to find aspen along the canyon’s rim or slope but I do know a few places.
I am sorry for your loss. I’d feel even more alone right now if Sierra disappeared and one of the reasons I don’t let her out.
That cool old Ford almost made the junkyard view worth it.
#6363 for next week.
I can’t fathom that rim-to-rim hike once, let alone three times. #214 for next week.
I’m glad I hiked it when I could still carry a backpack as now I’d need a Sherpa. #214 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, thought it was a Ford but I see Liberal Warrior has confirmed it and added to it. Hope he finds Buddy, losing a four legged companion is heart breaking at the best of times. Great set of photos and not we do not remember seeing the clouds like that, lovely photo. Love the Springbok photo, we saw a few in Botswana in 2017, but this last trip did not see any and Kruger has not got them anyway. Favourite photo for this week has to be you and your brother, love seeing the old photos and it is great that we still have them, especially you after losing so much in the fire. 304 for next week please. Take care and stay safe, Diane and Nigel.
Thanks. Kruger has Impala by the 1000s instead of Springbok. Sure glad I spent an entire winter years ago scanning the old photos. #304 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, my goodness the Friday’s soon roll round, but then again I look forward to them and your Photo Friday posts. Lovely Canyon photo’s and I love the one of you and your brother taken in Sept 1956. My fav this week is Looking down at Colorado River on the North side of Grand Canyon Nat Park. No0693 for next week please. Stay safe. PS. How are your wrists ?
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoy sharing in my memories. #0693 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, vacationing vicariously through your posts this winter, paired with the “stay-at-home” order, has me seriouusly considering a trip to the southwest soon. The diversity of wildlife in South Africa stuns me every time. Love seeing your pictures, as always. Number 1403 (the start of my quarantine) for next week, please. Also, ditto to Rita’s question. Hope you’ve healed and are doing well in your PT.
Sure am glad to have you along and hope you do visit the SW when this BS is over. #1403 for next week.
Number 2017 for next weeks Foto Friday. The year I hiked to Phantom Ranch to celebrate my 70th birthday.
Right on! I’m glad I hiked the canyon in my 50s while I could still carry the load. #2017 for next week.
Great collection as always. I always love the canyon shots and I love the last photo. I love to go old car shows and take photos of them but I am not much at identifying them.
Thanks. Old cars are cool to look at but I know nothing. #4320 for next week.
Ooops, my number next week is 4320
Your car looks like a late 40’s ford to me. David had a 1950 Ford that his dad gave to him in the 60’s and that he still had when I met him. Love my sign. Wish I could walk the whole thing. I always wanted to walk the AT but have only done parts of it. Great Zebra picture too. I’ll take #9118 for next week
I don’t know one car from another, old or new. Yet general consensus says Ford. I’ve only walked a small bit of the AZ trail and I know you’ve done a bit of the AT. #9118 for next week.
Your photos take us places where, for now, we cannot. Don’t think I could ever tire of your Grand Canyon photos! Next week I’d like 1000 the fine for violating San Diego’s closures, the maximum misdemeanor fine allowed.
Thanks. I truly enjoy the trips back in time from these. #1000 for next week. That’s some serious business.
I’m always happy to get a pic of your canyon from any direction! The zebar is my favorite this week. His coloring is so vivid!!
#226 for next week please.
Thanks. In 2008 when I started working at the canyon, and blogging, I upped the number of photos I took so have an endless supply. #226 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, whoohoo. I managed to access your comments . The old car yard is interesting. My number for next week is 7000. A gift of cash I received from a couple who realised that I am financially challenged during lockdown due to the nature of my people filled businesses. Such a couple will sure go to heaven, Be safe Jo
That is awesome Jo, there are many good people in this world. #7000 for this week. Be well.
So glad you are doing well! And such a great attitude!! <3 8*)
I would love to try 2021 for next week, please.
Thank you! <3 <3 <3 8*)
Thanks, I’m trying. #2021 for next week. Be well.
The phantom ranch would be a good place to isolate yourself! If it weren’t for needing food water and plumbing. No number purposely because travel and uncertain internet. I tried to comment Saturday here, but WiFi cut off….OK where we are now, maybe because it’s late and nobody else is on it.
Phantom would be perfect now that the canyon is closed. Mules still bring supplies. Just take care please.
