This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 12 readers including plenty of Grand Canyon, south African wildlife, my first park, and my first and most recent birthday.
Liberalwarrior chose #7777. No bad views of the Grand Canyon, but my favorite views are from the North Rim. Maybe I’m biased.
Jim and Diana chose #228, “the number of days until the general election.” I owe gratitude to my dearly departed friend Berta for prompting me to learn about politics, which she loved to discuss. This shot was taken 11-23-08 outside her Yarnell home that was lost in the fire along with everything in this image.
Susie chose #0509. A May 2015 sunset view over Grand Canyon from my RV parked on the North Rim.
Doris chose #0320, “the first day of spring.” This shot taken in Pilanesberg Game Reserve on 4-3-14 was closer to the first day of fall in South Africa. Note the Black-backed Jackal in the blurry background keeping an eye on the Guineafowl.
Diane and Nigel chose #2003. Angels Window is a place they saw when visiting me on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. I don’t think we went on top of it.
Rita chose #6039. The trickle of a waterfall seen along the Suspension Bridge Trail in Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa during my last visit in 2014.
Sallie and Bill forgot a number this week, so there were 47 words in her comment and that’s what they get. This is me at 1 1/2 years old in 1955.
Jeff chose #120, for the average rainfall in San Diego that has been surpassed. Back in 1992 when this was taken rain wasn’t in shortage at Ryan Lake in Mt St Helens National Volcanic Monument where I worked. This shot, obviously in the Blast Zone, was taken from the Norway Pass Trail.
Sherry chose #9999. This snowy view of Grand Canyon was also taken from my RV on the North Rim about one week before Susie’s view above.
Yogi chose #3222. You all know how much I like rock. This shot of tilted and eroded rock was seen from the Palm Canyon trail in Anza-Borrego State Park, California.
Che chose #7500. I don’t know if these zebras were getting friendly or flicking flies off each others nose. Got an interesting ground level view from the bird-hide near camp in Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa.
Jo chose #2603. Called the Wall of Windows and seen among the hoodoos from the rim trail at Bryce Canyon National Park last May.
My choice this week: The look for my Corona Birthday, without the beer. (So it’s a dirty mirror)
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Love the pants! Best not to waste the Windex right now. So sad on the story behind 228. Let’s try 221 next week.
Thanks, I have a T-shirt to match but it’s a little much all together plus cool enough to need the sweat shirt. #221 for next week.
Gawd! Is Friday again already.
I celebrated your B-day on my back under an old house filled with so many spider webs it looked like halloween Nightmare movie, tearing out old iron plumbing and replacing with ABS and day dreaming of the pristine desert when I wasn’t cussing. Hope(?) To finish today and get an afternoon hike in.
During my earlier years, I went a number of times by Ajo on my way to Rocky Point, but don’t recall ever stopping. Because of your pics, I will next, if I get that chance again. Keep those pics coming.
9797 for next week.
My how time flies… But that doesn’t sound like fun. Hope you got in the hike. I like the town of Ajo very much and would consider living here more permanently if it didn’t get so bloody hot in the summer. I am not keen on AC, give me elevation. #9797 for next week.
“give me elevation. ”
Quandary… Desert or Mountains.
High country desert is the compromise. Cooler summers. Great Vistas. Evergreens. Life giving Agua.
And should you want to escape the restful peace of winter, and RV to head into the American low deserts.
I grew up in the high desert of the Okanogan’s distinct 4-seasons. In those days in the valley, summer temps would be in the teens. We slept outside all summer with the stars and Sputnik. On hot afternoon breaks from farm work and the heat, we would head up the creek to the Mud Hole where we taught ourselves to swim. Or to the river to dive off the bridge or big rocks to impress the grrl’s. .
Winter down to 65* below and 6-ft. of snow sometimes drifting over the house, only the chimney visible from the NW approach. Its milder there now with global warming.
My fondness for 4-seasons, wood stoves, and the coming of new Spring birth, the warmth of Spring and summer(“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”- Steinbeck), the cooling beauty of Fall, the restful silence of winter, still runs deep in my soul. I will take ‘elevation’.
Stay warm viewing the mystery of a fire. Embrace life giving Spring and the return of Butterflies and Hummers. Revel in the heat of summer along side a pristine mountain creek. Welcome the colorful cool of Fall.
And, I, too, hate cooling airconditioning. For years I have disabled it in all my vehicles, new or used.
Have a good week you all.
Absolutely love the two pics you posted this week of yourself. What a cute baby you were!!! And of course I love the tye dye from your birthday pic. It’s looking like I’ll be spending my first summer here in Saudi Arabia… I’ll choose #0324 for next week.
Susie, your comment got lost in spam so I missed it. Thanks for dropping by. Hope you will share more about your first summer in SA. I’m giving you #0324 for this week. Be well.
Hi Gaelyn, I love the zebras. I always love all your photos. And the one of you is priceless. I would like 7203 which is a jumble of today’s date. It’s today’s date: 27th March which is our first day of Lockdown in South Africa and two of my granddaughters’ birthdays, Be safe. Jo
Thanks. Happy Birthday to those girls #7203 for next week.
Sorry about the repetition. Only 3/4 of the first day in isolation and I’m going senile ! LOL!
I like tilted rock, also. I have a photo of that same rock formation taken during the super bloom last year. Was awesome comparing the photos you took in Jan. 2015 and mine in March 2019. That must’ve been fun waiting in a bird hide and seeing the zebra…something to imagine. #2004
Ah, like minds and eye. I avoided those crowds last year. Wildlife came close to our fenced camp to a nearby waterhole but the perspective from the hide windows was ground level so unique. #2004 for next week. Thanks for playing along.
Thanks for the memories, no we did not go on top, remember Nigel has a balance problem with his feet, he does not like being near the edge anywhere. I do not remember seeing that wall of windows but we were only there overnight, it was a quick visit at sunset and again at sunrise. Our favourites are the two of you, excellent.
I have friends who are already complaining about boredom and being shut in – I do not understand it as I said before I would be quite happy to be alone in a tent in the Kalahari! I love my own company.
2703 for next week please. Stay safe. Diane and Nigel
I do remember now, we didn’t miss anything. The Bryce shot would have been along longest rim trail.
I don’t understand being bored either and yet try to sympathize.
#2703 for next week.
The tragedy of the Yarnell Fire, so much loss in lives and life. Such great pictures of the North Rim seem so impossible with the sun nearly always behind the subject.
For next week I’d like 72 the minimum distance in inches for social distancing.
My biggest problem taking North Rim shots was keeping my own shadow out of the frame. #72 for next week.
Love the first and last pictures, the canyon and you. Also the sweet little girl and the great zebras. I think I’ll take number 78-65 for no reason at all. Sure wish I was still on the road.
Thanks. #7865 for next week. It’s not easy to be on the road right now.
You are really into rocks, you should have been a geologist, Naw, you should be a ranger, geologists are boring. They have two things to say, either “Hey did you hear about the well I drilled.” or “Hey, did you hear about the well of mine that the drillers messed up.
My number for next week is 8765
I do like rocks and am a generaloligist. Poor geologist end up in gas and oil. #8765 for next week.
Good morning Gaelyn, As always I love the Canyon photo’s but also like the zebras. My favourite is that lovely photo of you age 1 and half years old. Hope all is well with you during these trying times. No 3248 for next week please.
Thanks. Always fun to see those really old photos. #3248 for next week. Be well.
Love the photo of Berta’s place. Sad memories but treasured. Also got a kick out of your birthday photo. Another thing, no matter how many times I enter GEOGYPSY for the video, it says it is incorrect. So how about 101 for the number of times I think I tried.
Berta was a marvelous eclectic collector. All the pics I took of her stuff also helped her collect better insurance money. #101 for next week.
Beautiful, sweet and poignant, great selections again this week. Love little you :-)))
#628 for next week please
Thanks. #628 for this week.
Well how lucky was I to get that sweet little blonde angel (with a mischievous twinkle and grin). Beautiful desert and canyon shots in this post and the later one, as always so many smiles! Take care of yourself. I’ll take 175 , close to the name of the dopey freeway we’ve been traveling in the last couple of days.
I entered this world as a trouble maker being born in a snowstorm. #175 for you this week. Be safe out there please.
Ps…if I’m not too late. What with closing up the cottage and road tripping I’ve lost all sense of time.
