This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by nine readers including travels from the Northwest to the Southwest with some South African animals thrown in.
Sherry chose #7346. This giant 3-4 foot long tortoise hung out in the campground at Gamka Mountain Nature Reserve in South Africa during my March 2014 visit. Signs everywhere reminded to check under your vehicle before starting off.
Diane and Nigel chose #1303. I love curvy mountain drives like the Cedar Canyon Highway 14 through the Dixie National Forest in southern Utah. A favorite route between Bryce Canyon and Cedar City for shopping and maybe a stop at Cedar Breaks National Monument along the way.
Melissa chose #111, one of five in a panorama. Cave Creek flowing past my camp-hostess site on the Siskiyou National Forest only four miles from my Ranger job at Oregon Caves during the summer of 2007.
Yogi chose #2019. Sunset and monsoon are a perfect combination seen from the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park. Rangers get paid in sunsets.
Rita chose #7373. Nature is the best artist when sculpting sandstone as seen somewhere near the upper Buckskin trail in southern Utah. These are ancient sand dunes with cross-bedding, cross-cutting, and mineral-filled dikes.
Jo chose #4038 “2019 x 2”. And she gets x 2 Hammerkops seen at Kruger National Park, a bird I’m sure she’s familiar with. But for those birders who want to see what I’d call exotic birds, because they live in South Africa then check out this link.
Sallie and Bill chose #818, one of five in a panorama. Vermillion Cliffs parallels SR89A in northern Arizona between Lee’s Ferry and House Rock Valley at the eastern foot of the Kaibab Plateau. The original route was called the “Honeymoon Trail” for Mormons headed to Salt Lake City to get married.
Lisa chose #2776. This sunset shot over Grand Canyon was taken from the Transept Trail on the North Rim 9-29-10.
Doris chose #0317. This late afternoon shot across canyon to snowy Humphrey Peak was taken from the North Rim Lodge before that side of Grand Canyon was open for 2015.
My choice this week from one of many delightful sunsets seen from my current yard still on BLM Darby Well Road near Ajo, Arizona. I’m safe and hope to get some propane in town to keep me going. I’m in a good place to practice social distancing and I hope you are too. Let me know how you’re doing.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. For more of the story just follow the links. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 0001 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Ajo_ Interesting area. Must be and old military airbase north of town, and a hell of a deep hole south of town. Lots of streets with few homes.
I-5 is full of RV’s heading north with all the State parks closing closing in the southwest. counted 17 in five minutes at Roseburg, Oregon
Stay Healthy You All
7777 for next week
I am camped looking at the tailings from that big hole. And Ajo has grown because of the influx of border patrol and wall contractors, so lots of homes. But no Canadians are left. I am staying home out in the desert other than filling propane and a few groceries. Agree with SUWA. #7777 for next week. Be well, be safe.
SUWA advises members and the public to stay home. Seems the are offering good advice. https://suwa.org/news-events/
SUWA _ Southern Utah Wilderness Association
Some National Parks are, for now, allowing limited access to open spaces and keeping roads open for through drives.
For more info go to > https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/news/public-health-update.htm
Some parks are closing completely and some just partially. Best to check an individual park’s website. Free entrance keeps fee collectors from interacting with visitors. Best thing, stay home.
Love the giant tortise, Gaelyn. Being in a holding pattern for a bit in Florida, we may be able to witness the sea turtle nesting season! Put us down for 228 next week…the number of days until the general election.
See the turtle nesting would be awesome and worth staying in FL for. #228 for next week. Can’t hardly wait for that to happen.
Always such an interesting variety of photos! Love the turtle and the Grand Canyon especially. Let’s pick #0509 for next week!
Thanks. #0509 for next week. Stay well, stay safe my friend.
#0320 the first day of spring is my choice for next week. Looking forward to our local wildflower bloom here in Pa.
Happy Spring! #0320 for next week.
Very difficult as always to pick a favourite, but the sandstone has to be top of the pops, it is quite amazing. Nothing exciting here as we are confined to our home except with a daily permit. All shops closed other than food shops and with limited numbers. Other than that the only things open are banks, chemists and hospitals. Just hope it all works and the virus disappears as fast as it appeared.
2003 for next week please.
Stay safe, best wishes from Diane and Nigel
Thanks. I shared that sandstone shot on a FB page and people went nuts. Don’t think there’s much open around here either but I haven’t ventured out to look. If we don’t spread this I too hope it disappears. #2003 for next week. Stay well.
Hi Gaelyn, Love all the Canyon photo’s but my favourite is that lovely Giant Tortoise at the Gamka Mountain Nature Reserve South Africa. No 6039 for next week please. We are isolated for three months because of the Virus, so plenty of homework to keep us occupied.
Thanks, I thought you’d like all those canyon shots. But of course the Tortoise is cool too. Let us hope it doesn’t take three months of isolation to get past this virus. #6039 for next week. Be well.
We’ve driven that road past the Vermillion Cliffs, so that was a fun memory (and a beautiful picture — as all of them are.) Happy memories. Making new ones could be a challenge for a while for us as all our walking places are closed for now.
It is a beautiful drive and I have many photos. I am sorry yet not to hear those places are closed and do hope you have some outdoor options left. Be well, be safe, be happy, it’s not forever.
Rita’s choice is showcases some totally unusual natural artistry, but all are great photos. For next week I’d like 120 Whoot, whoot the rainfall in San Diego has surpassed it’s 12.0 inch average.
Thanks. Our art imitates nature. #120 for next week.
Love your current view and my tortoise. I’m back in Virginia and hope I’m not here again for another summer because of the pandemic. There isn’t much boondocking on the East coast and there’s always the chance that they will close the state and national parks for camping which makes it a bit worrisome not to be hunkered down some where like you are. I’ll take number 9999 for next week
I too like this desert view and am glad for the warmth but couldn’t survive here during the heat of summer. Lots of campgrounds closed right now, public and private. Hang in there. #9999 for next week.
I like all of them, you are so talented and have a great eye for what take a photo. I’m glad you are safe. Just so you know, my employer is paying producers about 18 cents a gallon for propane at the wellhead, we are selling for 30 cents, (after extracting it from natural gas and moving it from Oklahoma to the Texas gulf coast) so somebody is making a killing on it.
My number for next week is 3222.
We are isolating ourselves. I am starting to cut back on the visits to my brother in his rehab hospital to every other day as I think that is my biggest risk, and I may be the biggest risk to him as well. I went and got his cell phone and got it going again and I am going to give it to him with the admonition to not call his old military buddies and ask for a rescue mission. Plus I think they are about to shut off visiting anyway.
Thank you for the lovely compliment. I think my art background has helped with composition and balance in photography.
I last paid $3.30/gal for propane. You’re getting ripped off. 😉
#3222 for next week.
I would like to have your view. Seeing the hwy 14 through the Dixie NF is very enticing. I’m in the stay at home order in Wash. state. # 7500
Thanks. So many beautiful views to choose from, including many in Washington. #7500 for this week.
