This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 12 readers including many from South Africa, a variety of trees, and a little shit.
Gilda chose #2500, “the amount of miles we still need to do to get to Nordkapp in Norway.” The Scots Pine trees there look more like our Ponderosa Pine than the twisted Pinyon Pine root seen above. This is the slowly decaying remnants and I was attracted to the wood grain when found wandering along the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona during June 2014.
Diane and Nigel chose #2806. I’d be sure they’ve seen Ostrich in their travels. This one was spotted in Mountain Zebra National Park, South Africa during my 2013 visit.
Jim and Diana chose #1919, “the year my Canadian grandpa returned from France after fighting for the U.S. Army in WWI.” This from the year 2011, in September when the Aspen begin to turn gold at the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.
Jo chose #4716. Having lived all over Africa she can relate to this shot I took at Wild Spirit Backpackers Lodge just before meeting her in nearby Knysna during my 2013 visit to South Africa.
Mary chose #0704, for 4th of July. I am grateful to work in a national park on holidays and especially this one as there are no fireworks. I know they are pretty but can be so dangerous. Yet this number is appropriate for the Yarnell fire that burned before and after 4th of July in 2013 when 19 firefighters died. The above image was taken the following spring when APS removed the fire damaged oak tree behind the house that survived. Suckers came up on the stump and now grow almost to roof height.
Pat chose #3434, “which in Celsius will be the temperatures on Monday and Tuesday, oh hot, hot. That’s 93°F.” Her shot is one of six in a panorama taken from the Mfazana bird hide at iSimangaliso Wetland Park on a warm (not hot) summer day in South Africa, February 11, 2014.
Rita chose #6322. Great way to end a lovely day watching crashing waves on the rocky coast of Indian Ocean in Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa from my last visit in 2014.
TreDeuce chose #1317. As a geo-nerd I look closely at rock like this iron on Kaibab limestone. Besides, it was an excellent excuse to stop and catch my breath climbing the Bright Angel Trail on the final part of my rim to rim hike across Grand Canyon spring 2009.
Jodee and Bill chose #1421 and are probably wondering about a sight they see regularly as slaves to Tessa fluffy dog. But this, is hyena scat in Kruger National Park, South Africa. My first visit during March 2010, I took pics of a lot of shit.
Yogi and Random dot org chose #7100. One of many random shots taken of Burchell’s Zebras in Karoo National Park, South Africa during my 2014 visit.
Jennifer chose #1865. Being watched. Little did I really know what to expect and how much the Drakensberg Mountains would grab my spirit when stopping for a snack, not shared with the Sun lizard, at Breakfast Stream on an overnight backpacking adventure lead by Jo’s son. This was during my first of three visits to South Africa.
Jeff chose #1930, “the year Alberta’s Jasper National Forest was granted Nation Park status.” The uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park was designated in 1997 and made a World Heritage Site in 2000. And here I am enjoying the landscape in 2010 on the same hike as above.
My choice looking up from near the Tropic Ditch.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Your photos are quite amazing. I love the lizard.
Happy July 4th from this side of the border!
#4444
Thank you. That’s two weeks in a row you’ve gotten a lizard. Wonder what #4444 will bring next week.
I guess it is fitting, since I live in a wetland, surrounded by frogs and snakes, and red efts!
Ha ha yes seen lots of Ostrich, but I think you have ridden one which I have not. I have ridden (sort of) on a camel though. Love the shot of Tsitsikamma, one of my most favourite places though it always seem to rain when we go there!! Love the shot of the hoodoos as well, they are quite spectacular. 507 for next week please.
Hope you have a good weekend, all the very best, Diane and Nigel
I did ride an ostrich just not for very long and no camel. Tsitsikamma is gorgeous and have been there in the rain also. #507 for next week.
Your photos of Bryce Canyon sure make me miss the pine trees and sandstone of Utah. My number for next week is 3909
Must be time for a western vacation. #3909 for next week.
So many great photos of South Africa, I love the Ostrich one. For next week can I have 8888? Thank you 🙂
Thanks, I fell in love with South Africa and would dearly love to return. #8888 for next week.
Great photo’s Gaelyn, I too love the one of the Ostrich and the one of you at the Drakensberg Park. Those Zebras are so cute. No 5398 for next week please. Have a great weekend.
Thank you. I fell in love with all the wonderful wildlife in South Africa. #5398 for next week.
Choice, the last pic. Majestic, like a castle on a high mount. Good defined color and light balance.
1923 for next week, please.
Thank you. Sometimes it’s difficult to capture the formations in Bryce. #1923 for next week. The year Bryce became a national monument.
Have to say I like ‘my’ photos best this week, though the one of you in all that green is lovely. And the scat looks like a ginger root! 😉 Next week, please put me down for # 2804, the last four digits of my phone number backwards.
I would happily return to South Africa for more photos, and to hike again in “all that green” of the Drakensbergs. #2804 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, lovely shots and many memories in here for me. My favorite is the image of the hyena scats. I cannot believe a much smaller carnivore than my Lab, Skabby can make a bigger poo than he does! I suppose he doesn’t have to protect his territory. My number for next week is 1207 when our oldest grandson, Joshua turns 13. What a sweet boy. Have a great day. Jo
Thanks Jo. I do love to see these SA memories. #1207 for next week. Happy birthday to Joshua, how fast these kids are growing.
LOL to the scat pic!! Yes we are slaves to Tessa’s offerings 🙂 I love the blue and green of the bird hide. The zebras are wonderful.
Oops! #913 for next week please.
Been there when I had a dog. #913 for next week.
Such fun as always – almost all beautiful pictures (and even the shit is interesting) … It’s really nice to see the wildlife and wild scenery as we have definitely missed seeing anything like that lately. It’s good to be back in blogland — please let me sit out Photo Friday this time, as I need first to catch up with you and other bloggy friends. But please let me back next week !!! I have missed you.
Glad you enjoyed the photos, even the shit. 😉 Good to have you back. Have fun catching up and hope you’ll be back next week.
