This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 15 readers including North Rim Grand Canyon views and up in the air South Africa.
TreDeuce chose two numbers, 1016 and 1028. “Between 10/16 & 10/28 1962 the world held its breath as two nuclear super powers held the world’s fate in their hands in a standoff over nuclear equipped misses in Cuba. We dodged a bullet and civilization continued on.” He is obviously a history buff. These shots are both historical in a geologic sense with one much older than the referred to cultural history. First shot reveals a storm over House Rock Valley and the Little Colorado River cut located on the far side of Grand Canyon’s visible 300 million year old rock layers as seen from Point Imperial overlook on the North Rim. Second shot taken at the base of Havasu Falls shows only two years of travertine deposits after the 2008 flood that roared through the Havasupai Reservation.
Diane and Nigel chose #1204. Another eastern view from the North Rim Grand Canyon scenic drive this time Brady Peak in the foreground and beyond to Echo Cliffs in the distance from Vista Encantada overlook.
Melissa Goodman chose #1980. The end of the scenic drive on the North Rim at Cape Royal provides this southeastern view including Freyas Castle and a bit of the Colorado River.
Jennifer chose #194. One of two footbridges crossing the Colorado River at the bottom of Grand Canyon from my fist rim-to-rim hike in 2008.
Jo chose #5250. Hiking a totally different than above Palm Canyon at Anza Borrego Desert State Park in California. This was a colorful February wildflower hike.
George chose #0420. Up up and away… Instead of paying $400 US to ride in the balloon for an hour I instead took photos of the take off. Would have been fun way to watch the wildlife at Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa.
Lisa chose #6627. A blacksmith demonstrated his skills at Western Legends Round Up in Kanab, Utah in 2014.
Rita chose #7894. These same unidentified flowers are in bloom right now in Yarnell but my flower field guide is packed away. Feel free to chime in.
Gilda chose #2110. So many wonderful shapes, colors, and swirls to be found at White Pocket on the Paria Plateau of northern Arizona.
Sue chose #1219, “My mother’s birthday” and one of five images in a panorama. A different view than above from Vista Encantada overlook on the North Rim. I find standing dead trees rather sculptural.
Yogi chose #1090. A drive-by shot of Echo Cliffs along SR89 in northern Arizona.
Jim and Diana chose #7218, “as that is our current (snowy) altitude in Santa Fe.” There was no chance of snow at this low altitude Karoo National Park were I spotted this South African Grey Rhebok in 2014.
Sallie and Bill chose #1108, “the house number of my childhood home.” I think I could make Death Valley National Park my winter home. Then I’d be the Ranger instead of joining a Ranger guided walk where I saw these towering cliffs in Natural Bridge Canyon.
Jeff chose #1163, “the year construction began on the Notre Dame Cathedral.” It is equally sad to loose natural landscapes to fire that often take longer to recover than rebuilding. This weird drive-by shot shows the fresh burn by the 2009 Aspen fire that occurred along the scenic drive on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park in 2009.
Jodee and Bill chose #9070. Looking over the edge as the Orange River creates Augrabies Falls in South Africa.
I’ve been so busy this month I’ve hardly taken any photos. Berta’s daughter and SIL visited last week to go through ‘stuff’. I’ve been going through ‘stuff’ too and trying to consolidate from living in three places down to two. More on the preparations for moving to Bryce next week.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
We nearly lost a world treasure this week, but time and history has never been kind to our great human constructs.
1666 for next week. The great London fire that consumed cathedrals, over 100 churches, and much of London. A level of damage not to be sustained again until WW11.
I am sad about the Notre Dame fire, however I think we could take care not to loose more of of the planet that supports us. #1666 for next week.
Good morning Gaelyn, I expect it’s a little upsetting having to go through stuff of your friends, also for her daughter. Needless to say I expect you will come across things which bring happy memories.Love this selection of photo’s ,that one of the footbridge crossing the Colorado River at the bottom of Grand Canyon looks postively frightening,I don’t think I could face it. Favourite this week is Looking over the edge of Orange River, South Africa. No 5398 for next week, Thanks. Enjoy your weekend.
Being I’ve lived with Berta’s stuff for almost a year now I’m comfortable with it and have found a few treasures to keep. Much more difficult for her daughter’s first visit.
Although it’s a suspension bridge I never found it rocking. And absolutely love the views up and down stream. Actually not as intimidating to me as looking over the edge of Augrabies Falls.
#5398 for next week.
While I’m with Jeff in regards to ‘natural landscapes’, I would argue that they are not ‘equal’.
The loss of anything diminishes our human experience and can threaten our existence, but the loss of precious habitat is profound and repair can take scales of time beyond several human life times, if ever. The rutted damage from the wagon wheels of the Oregon Territory pioneers is still evident 160-plus years later.
The man caused loss of the natural habitat of Mesopotamia turned a verdant landscape into a desert.
Earth will abide, but it is increasingly unclear that we will.
Thank you for my gorgeous photo and description, it is of course my favorite!! The colors woven through the rock always makes my heart happy! 8*)
My second favorite is Augrabies Falls in South Africa. I love all that rock and water, two of my favorite things!
May I have 9197 for next week? .<3 <3 <3 8*)
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the colorful rock, and waterfall. #9197 for next week.
Thank you for publishing my number photo and the memories of such a beautiful area. I also enjoyed all the others and in particular Jodee and Bill’s. For next Friday can I choose 2304? Good luck with your move to Bryce😄
Thank you for joining in. #2304 for next week.
What a fab set of photos, as usual very hard to find a favourite, but the first shot of the storm over House Rock Valley is magnificent. We hope that you have a good Easter weekend, but with you thinking of moving very soon we imagine that you have a lot to do. 1904 for next week please. Take care Diane and Nigel
Thanks. I do love to watch the storms. Looks like I’ll be moving this about this weekend and too busy to hunt for Easter eggs. 😉 #1904 for next week.
Thanks for all the wonderful photo and the ballon ride, let try 1985 next week please.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the ride. #1985 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, Treduece certainly is a history buff . Did you have a post about Berta? Have I missed something significant? I used to follow her blog. The bloom looks like a plumbago but I thought it was indigenous to Africa? so not so sure after all. I am choosing 3004 (30th April) which should have significance on something I hope to change soon. Take care Jo
Being my best friend, Berta was spoken about often on my blog but passed away last July. Not a blogger.
#3004 for you next week and holding thumbs for your upcoming changes.
Love the Grey Rhebok…any tie in to the Reebok brand? Put us down for 6880 next week, the elevation we saw a herd of Pronghorns out our window in Springerville, AZ this morning.
LOL! Don’t think there’s a relationship, though I thought the same. Dang, you’re in AZ already. #6880 for next week.
I’ll take a guess that your mystery flower is a Globe Gilia. I use https://borregowildflowers.com/ as resource.
I like the Treduce comment “the earth will abide” [endure]. Reminds me of the Jeff Bridges in the Big Lebowski as he ‘abides’ as the Dude. For next week I’d like 2004 the year I had my Big Lebowski moment, releasing my dad’s ashes off Font’s Point in Anza Borrego.
Thanks for the flower ID. A fitting place to release your dad’s ashes. So #2004 it is for next week.
So many incredible shots, but I love my falls the best!! I can feel the power of the water.
#9311 for next week please.
Thanks. Those thundering falls were amazing. Nice you’re getting to see running water now. #9311 for next week.
Amazing, Gaelyn! As ever. What a life… #0420 My daughter’s idea. Even though I’m the one taking medical marijuana!
Thanks. I like your number choice of #0420.
Loved that ours is a Death Valley photo …we’ve had some great experiences there (too long ago, pre-digital camera)….so we really should go back! Sigh …. A busy and difficult week for you , but lots to look forward to. Sending good thoughts your way. 526 next time? The date we fly out of here. That time of year for us too,
Death Valley, like all our national parks, deserve multiple visits. I’m busy but pacing myself and wish I was already there. #526 for next week.
I love the first Grand Canyon photo. I also do not wish to pay to ride in a hot air balloon. Pics are free!!
8762 for next week.
Thanks. I’d like to ride in a hot air balloon, and hang glide, and parachute. #8762 for next week.
