This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including mammals, birds, and maybe Huck Fin’s raft.
TreDeuce chose 3.141, pi. Succulents don’t eat pie. But this poster seen at Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa tells all about the arid thicket environment along the lowlands near Sundays River.
41 from the above number goes back to June 1989 at the California Living Museum in Bakersfield (CALM). I volunteered as an animal keeper (feed, water, and scoop poop) and on my first day was told the Mule Deer are the most dangerous animals to a keeper because we tend to trust them and if you turn your back they can rear up and clobber you with hooves. Two keepers always went into this enclose.
Jo chose #5640. A radiating sunset through the camper window at a windy and cold Rockhouse Trail camp in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California during February 2015.
#40 from the above number is a look into Spruce Tree House with a kiva in the foreground and smoke blackened ceiling, the remains of an Ancestral Puebloan multi-family dwelling. This ruin is accessible below the museum at Mesa Verde National Park where I worked the summer of 2005 in Colorado.
Jennifer chose #3942. A valley view from Gydo Pass above Prince Albert’s Hamlet. During my 2013 visit to South Africa I frequently went out of my way to drive mountain passes.
#42 from above, my front yard view overlooking the Columbia River and Mt. Hood which is not visible in this shot. While working for the US Fish & Wildlife Service in 1996 my government house was just above Spring Creek Fish Hatchery.
Lisa chose #32. The first time I saw an ostrich at Winston Wildlife Safari in Oregon where my family drove around in various enclosures in 1988 on our way moving south. This thing had poked its head in the truck window then led us to the gate. Little did I know I would some day ride an ostrich.
Yogi chose #8671. Gemsboks are the mascot animal at Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa, and no wonder because there are lots of them.
The #71 from above of a San Juaquin Kit Fox goes back to CALM in 1989.
Diane and Nigel chose #504. Next to monsoon my favorite season on the North Rim of Grand Canyon is fall when the golden Aspen leaves contrast with the ever greens.
The #04 from above is rather hard to see as a scanned B&W print taken in 1969. I grew up boat/camping on the Illinois River and this was not the usual mode of transportation seen floating by. Doesn’t it kind of look like Huck Finn’s raft?
Sue chose #915, “for both mine and my first grandson’s birthday.” No birthdays here but it was my first visit to Death Valley National Park in October 2009. I met a fellow Ranger there and this shot is looking east in Wildrose Canyon on the way to the Charcoal kilns.
The #15 from above a swan at Winston Wildlife Safari in Oregon from same 1988 trip as above.
Jim and Diana chose #4319 “for the day we took delivery of a shiny, new Henry!” I believe if this gate was open Henry could drive right through. However, there was no driving allowed in St George’s Park when I visited Port Elizabeth in South Africa in 2013.
The #19 from above is a sunrise over Draino Lake which is actually the mouth of the Little White Salmon River into the Columbia River in Washington. My US Fish & Wildlife office was located at the hatchery not far upstream.
Rita chose #8952. My truck and 5th-wheel parked at the North Rim Grand Canyon during the summer of 2014.
From the above number, 52 was taken from an overlook at Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument of Mt Hood barely visible in the far distance and Smith Valley below when I worked there the summer of 1992.
Sallie and Bill chose #63. A Golden Eagle at CALM.
Jeff chose #20, “the height of Borrego’s Maidenhair Falls.” Mt St Helens lost more than that going from 9677 to 8366 feet when it blew its top off on May 18, 1980. This shot was taken May 1996 from above my Pine Creek duty station located on the south side of the volcano.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Hard to deny the personality of the Kit Fox.
1016 and 1028 for next week. Between 10/16 & 10/28 1962 the world held its breath as two nuclear super powers held the world’s fate in their hands in a standoff over nuclear equipped misses in Cuba. We dodged a bullet and civilization continued on.
I believe our species is broken because we would even consider the use of nuclear misses to kill each other. You get #s 1016 and 1028 next week.
Lol! You were supposed to correct “misses’ not repeat it, but you were likely poking me in the ribs for not catching the predictive texting replacement of ‘missiles’.
I’m frequently amazed by how many of the same trails we have crossed. Did you ever go to hot springs pools down on the river and get naked…col!
From your perch above Spring Creek Hatchery, you likely saw me sailing on the river as I did almost every afternoon for years, usually past Government Island, returning in the late evening.
You would have been great crew along with the other interesting characters that were often aboard. No cell phone use allowed until we approached the moorage at the end of the days adventure.
I often taught sailboarding on Draino.
It’s true we’ve been to many of the same places.
Correction; Drano Lake.
Hot Springs on the Wind River.
I would love to see those golden aspens and the firs together in real life, the yellow of the aspens is just amazing. Think the favourite though has to be the little fox, very cute with such an enquiring face. 1204 for next week please. Hope you have a good weekend. Think we will be doing our best to keep warm (frosts predicted again on Sunday) and feel better. All the best from us both, Diane and Nigel
The Kit Fox was an endangered species so the facility requested special permission to breed them when a little girl fox was brought in. Hope you start feeling better and the weather improves. #1204 for next week.
my favorite is the last. Mount St. Helens has a special place in my heart because my Uncle Rees lived in Tacoma and collected ash and brought it back east for me that summer!! 8*)
Has 1980 been chosen before? If not that would be my request, please. 8*)
That’s a wonderful memory of St Helens. #1980 for next week.
I really enjoy the mountains and landscapes! #194 for next week!
Thanks Jenn. #194 for next week.
Hello Gaelyn, I loved every picture but the Golden Eagle was my favourite. I’ve just realized I’m an Animal Keeper as well: I seem to incessantly feed, water and scoop poop! Please put me down for 5250 for next week. Hugs. Jo
Thanks. Yes, you are an animal keeper. #5250 for next week.
So many interesting stories in all these wonderful pictures. Please try me for 0420 next week.
Thanks George. We all have stories to tell. #0420 for next week.
Love the wildlife photography! It’s interesting to see the damage at Mt. St. Helens, too. Number 6627 for next week, please
Thanks Lisa, can’t go wrong with cute animals. #6627 for next week.
Love the valley view from Gydo Pass South Africa Gaelyn. You have certainly done some travelling. What an achievement !!! Favourite this week is No 504 next to Monsoon on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon those trees are beautiful, No 7894 for next week please. Have a great weekend.
Thanks. I love to travel and feel like I’ve barely made a dent in my long list. #7894 for next week.
Your photos are amazing. My favorite of these selections is The Golden Eagle!
Thanks. Bubba, the Golden Eagle, was heavily imprinted so easy to get close to.
I like this game…so many wonderful memories here. My favourite has to be the Golden Eagle. For next week can I choose number 2110?
Thanks, it’s fun for me to see these old shots. #2110 for next week. Thanks for playing along.
Guess I have to say I love that 915 photo. I got lucky on that number, since I have been on that road and took photos myself of those gorgeous alluvial fans, one of the best geomorphic features around Death Valley. I am always enamored with the fans when we travel there. Ok, I’ll play again, this time 1219 My mother’s birthday. She died in 1952, but I still remember her so well.
Alluvial fans tell such a great erosion story. #1219 for next week.
I love all your photos and especially the Golden Eagle, and the Gydo Pass photo as it reminds me of some of the valleys in southeast Idaho. The info about mule deer is interesting. I’ve had some deer follow me quite closely sometimes when I am geocaching and my deer hunter friends tell me that I may have been too close to their fawns and they were trying to distract me. I also love old photo of whatever it was floating on the Illinois River way back when.
Next week, 1090 is my number.
Thanks Alan. Seems like deer get used to people being around in some places but we still need to be aware. #1090 next week.
Love that Kit Fox. Looks like it wants to play!
Put us down for 7218 for next week, as that is our current (snowy) altitude in Santa Fe.
#7218 for next week.
I was enjoying all those old CALM photos and tickled that our “choice “ was that impressive Golden Eagle from there. You’ve had the best adventures. 1108 for next week? It’s almost that late and it is also the house number of my childhood home.
Thanks. Being an animal keeper was humbling, I felt honored and broken hearted at the time. #1108 for next week.
I was there when Mt St Helens blew its top, guess I’m a bit biased but I like your photo of how it has recovered.
For next week I’d like 1163 the year construction began on the Notre Dame Cathedral. I wonder if it can recover.
That had to be a wild and crazy experience to witness that eruption first hand. I hope we see the reconstruction of Notre Dame. #1163 for you this week.
So many wonderful shots, but the kit and Golden Eagle are absolutely wonderful!!!!
#9070 for next week please.
Thanks. Was amazing to work with the wildlife while also feeling sad they would never run wild. #9070 for this week.
Thanks for sharing such lovely photos with us. Have a great weekend.
