I’m turning 65 this week, another marker in life, on comes Medicare and the possibility of retirement, older but not old.
Other markers in life included getting a drivers license at 16. Last week I had to renew my Arizona drivers license. When it was issued 14 years ago I used to kid about it expiring in 2019, when turning 65, and hoped I would remember. Ha, ha. Like I’d be so old as to have lost my memory. Thank goodness, not yet.
Graduating from High School at age 18 was another marker in life. I was a ‘B’ student yet I’m sure my parents had doubts whether I’d actually graduate. I wanted to attend the Chicago Art Institute but was told “artists starve, you better get a job.” I waited tables for a while and began to travel.
A huge marker in life was getting married at 26 and becoming an instant Mom to two step-children aged five and ten.
Turning 30 means 30 isn’t old any more. I returned to school, became a Ranger and graduated with a BS in Environmental Studies and Mass Communication.
After two attempted reconciliations my husband and I traveled in a truck-camper to Mexico with plans to keep on truckin’ south. Turned 40 in Tulum, so depressed I considered suicide and instead decided on divorce.
Celebrating half a century surrounded by friends in Oregon was sensational. I knew life was good and would continue to get better. I’d found a balance working as a Park Ranger half the year and playing/traveling the other half.
A dream come true turning 60 in South Africa, my third visit to this amazing country. A place I could easily retire to. Yet I’m not quite ready to retire.
My birthday, is my special holiday and I’ve made it a policy not to work on my day. In my 20s I actually quit a job when refused my day off even asking two weeks in advance.
So much more to see and do, one life time will never be enough. I long thought I’d easily live to 100, my maternal grandparents made it to the mid 90s. Not long ago becoming a centurion was a big deal, definitely news worthy. Although still reported, people are living beyond 100 years with more frequency.
This year, I’m headed out with the truckcamper and caravanning with a friend in her motorhome up Castle Hot Springs Road north of Lake Pleasant and find a spot to boondock on BLM and hopefully find some pretty spring flowers, or whatever else comes our way.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY VERY SPECIAL FRIEND! 65 is a good year. All blessings and good things for you. I love the photos of you down the years and I LOVE you at 30! I’m also glad you didn’t succumb to your bad feelings at 40 and I remember when you turned 60 and came to SA! (yyyyyyyyyy6- this message from Missy the cat who will walk on the keyboard!) Oh dear Gaelyn. Have a wonderful birthday. Love Jo
Thank you so much, and to Missy too.
Love reading about your markers. Tickled about the Gunne Sax dress. Weren’t they fun?!! 50 was my most fun birthday too and I cant remember 65. Too funny. Wishing for you a great day and glad you have a friend to share it with. Love that ranger arm waving shot.
I loved my Gunne Sax. It was a marvelous day with friends surrounded by desert.
Another birthday at any age is to be celebrated, Gaelyn. Congrats on reaching this significant marker. So many don’t make this far.
At 72′, the trail behind me is tragically marked by the loss of a father at 10′, a my best friend at 16′, a daughter at 21′, a much loved Grandfather at 23′, another much loved Grandfather at 33′, my Grandmothers, more friends then I want to remember in Vietnam, and more family and newer friends along the trail to now. And recently my mother and another daughter.
So we are the lucky ones. We are the vessels that carry the memory of those who shared their lives with us. They live as long as we do.
Like you, I could live forever propelled by my still growing curiosity. I hope the last book I read and the last trail I hike is well into the future.
So take in the sunrise on your birthday, and the sunset. Spend the day embracing a life of precious gifts with more to be had in the days to follow. Each one another gift.
Thank you for the reminder, we are the lucky ones to still be here, and able to remember the ones we’ve lost.
Happy Birthday, Gaelyn! Welcome to the club!!! Hope you have an awesome day and an amazing year! xoxox
Thank you Susie. Had a wonderful day in the desert with friends.
Well Happy Birthday another wonderful milestone, So nice that can and have lived through some amazing years and great travels, Wishing you many many more wonderful years.
Thanks George. It’s been an amazing ride so far and can only get better.
Congratulations. I would love to be turning 65 again. It was a great year way back then.
Thanks. I’ll remember that.
“I considered suicide and instead decided on divorce.”
Been there.
“So much more to see and do, one life time will never be enough. I long thought I’d easily live to 100,”
At my last VA annual medical checkup I was asked “What are your health goals?”
I thought that was a rather strange question to ask someone that was 75 years old. So I gave a strange answer, “I want to live forever, and hope you never die.”
May we both have our pictures appear on a Smucker’s jar.
Thanks Ed. I never considered health goals other than staying alive.
Happy Birthday Gaelyn! My your gypsy spirit carry you on to many more milestones.
Thanks Jeff, I hope so.
Cute photos of your milestone birthdays. I’m sure you will have a great adventure for your 65th!
Thanks. I enjoyed a delightful sunny day in the desert with friends.
Happy birthday! May you keep exploring (and sharing with us) for many more years!
Thank you. I’ll continue to try.
I’m about to go out to visit my 95-year-old client! Just a quick happy birthday while I think of it! (I’m 63 this year!) What a great life. I hear you about divorce or depression. I did both.
I can only hope to still be alive, well, and posting at 95.
Happy birthday Gaelyn! Have a great time celebrating!
Thanks. Enjoyed a warm day in the desert with friends.
Thanks for sharing the milestones in your life. It always staggers my brain that life passed by so quickly and I always feel as if I must have blinked and missed something. It’s one of the perks of retirement, to be able to do what you want (for the most part) and when you want. I feel as if I’ve missed less. And, I agree, so much more living to do. I’m just a couple of years behind you. Happy Birthday!
Thanks. Life really isn’t long enough.
Happy birthday Gaelyn 65 is a lovely age especially if you love your work and love life as you do. I am sure you have many more years to do all you wish, beginning with the excitement of your new Park Rangers Job. ENJOY !!
Thank you so much.
Feliz cumpleaños, happy birthday! What a wonderful blog post. Many more adventures ahead for you!
The hoodoo rock people will have a belated BDay celebration with you, I’m certain. 🙂
Thanks. I feel like could celebrate with those rock people for a while.
Happy birthday Gaelyn! I’m a a bit further down the road than you at 72 (in four days). But fear not. When I was your age, I won a sports car racing championship over in Southern California, racing against 20 and 30-somethings. Those young wimper-snappers. And I have the embroidered jacket to prove it.☺
Happy Birthday!
Castle Hot Springs Rd and area is very nice. I hope you had a wonderful birthday, Gaelyn, celebrating in such a gorgeous area.
Thanks, it was gorgeous!
Happy Celebration Gaelyn!
Thank you.
No worries Gaelyn, you are still young! Happy Birthday to you, 65 is just a number, and seems young to me, now that I am 71. Everything is relative and so long as we are happy and healthy age isn’t such a big deal after all. Love your pictures and following your adventures. Happy trails to you!
Thanks. I don’t think 65 is old. I’m ready for many more adventures.
Happy Birthday, Gaelyn!! Glad your day was warm with friends. May you have many more of those and many more adventures to come!! <3 <3 <3 8*)
Thanks Melissa. I’m looking forward to more adventures.
Happy 65! You’re 10 years younger than I am, Gaelyn, so I must tell you that the next 10 will be full of adventure and happiness. I’ll turn 75 in May. Good Health to you, and I hope life’s trails lead you to your heart’s desires.
Thanks Barb. You are an inspiration.
How fun!! Great to review such wonderful milestones as you celebrate the big 6-5!! Here’s to many, many more.
Thanks.
Happy Belated. You have so many good years ahead! I love the idea of making the day your own special holiday. Can I blame my tardiness on the fact that I’m more than a decade older than you? (I don’t feel any different than I did at your age, for whatever it’s worth. The mirror might disagree.)
Thanks. Keep following your heart and don’t worry about the mirror.
Gaelyn, I love this post and all the great comments you got here. A life well lived indeed and much more to come. You have such a cool job😄 My husband and I just recently retired and bought a motorhome. We are traveling around Europe for now, but we would love to tour the USA in the future. Happy belated birthday!
Thanks. I do have a cool job and so look forward to returning to Rangering. Traveling by motorhome in Europe sounds great.
