This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by seven readers including ancient images of ancient stuff, spring flowers, and a few of my choices as well.
Rita chose #89. This lovely little creek flows from the waterfall in Roaring Springs Canyon about five miles down the North Kaibab trail and 3000 feet below the North Rim of Grand Canyon. In September 2008—my first season at the canyon—I took the mule ride to this area. Sadly, the last year the National Park Service allowed the ride that far. I wanted to experience as much as possible to share personal experience with visitors. As I’d already hiked rim to rim my feeling about which is better, no matter how you do it something is going to hurt, just different somethings. Mules are wide.
Jim and Diana chose #1040, “as I am going to do our taxes today.” Here we see your tax dollars at work feeding the non-native, hybrid Bison/Cattle that over-graze the meadows on public lands at the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.
My search of #40 from above reveals a standing dead tree in the blast zone, 12 years after the eruption of Mount St. Helens when I worked there in 1992.
Diane and Nigel chose #1503. The Navajo Loop trail in Bryce Canyon National Park descends to the base of the hoodoos, or as I think of them as the rock people. This shot from my first visit in 2010 with an old P&S. I look forward to sauntering and photographing here again.
The #03 from above, a scanned print from Christmas 1970. Adolph was a ball dog and opened his own present. Note the ribbons around this long body.
Tredeuce chose #1898, “the birth year of my much loved paternal grandfather. I believe that means he’s a classic, as is this Bugatti I spotted in the parking lot at the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.
From the #98 above. A 13-year old me, with a scarily similar haircut although today more gray. My 1967 class photo from O’Neil Junior High School in Downers Grove, Illinois.
Jennifer chose #5106. A sunset view over the Weaver Mountains I’ve taken and shared numerous times from Yarnell, Arizona.
The #06 from above takes me back to summer love and partying in 1971. A friend’s parents owned acreage with a lake where many days were spent languishing on a blanket as friends would come and go. A time just before we all became working and maybe responsible young adults.
Jeff chose #317 for St. Patrick’s Day. I’d feel extremely lucky if I’d found all these arrow heads. But none of them are old. These are reproductions from a couple friends’ who are flint knappers.
#17 from above is another scanned print taken in March, 1990. On an Olympic peninsula journey to visit a friend in La Push, Washington I stopped along the road and shot this view of Crescent Lake.
Sherry chose #7481. An unusual view of zebras from the underground bird hide in Addo Elephant National Park. My favorite elephant park in South Africa. However, I apologize for the over processed photos in Addo this post as I’d just starting using Lightroom and went overboard with excitement.
The #81 from above shows the craftsmanship of the Ancestral Puebloans when they built about 1000 years ago at what is now Aztec Ruin National Monument in New Mexico. I visited the summer of 2005 while working in the area at Mesa Verde National Park.
My final choice, a sure sign of spring. Patches of Poppies along a road near Wickenburg, Arizona earlier this week.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories from my archives. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Good morning Gaelyn. It looks as if the weather is brightening up in your part of the world, as is here. Nice to see the spring flowers blooming. The Poppies photo is stunning but my favourite this week is the lovely photo of you as a 13-year old, you look so happy. I wonder if you knew you were going to be a Ranger at that age or had you other ideas ?No 723 for next week please. Have a good weekend
Spring has sprung in the valley but I woke this morning to frost. At 13 I dreamed of going to the Chicago Art Institute. However, my parents said that artists starve, so I got a job waiting tables. I didn’t know what a Park Ranger was back then. #723 for next week.
“Over – grazing” _ Don’t get me started. And many lease holder ranchers think they can deny you access to these public lands.
A ‘real’ unrestored Bugatti. What a treat that would be to see that historic multi-million dollar car being driven in a National Park. Grandpa would have been barely into his thirties when that Bugatti was built.
The wildflower blooms are causing traffic jams in parts of the desert SW.
1966 for next week, the birth year of my first born.
Hope you found/find a tow, Gaelyn.
Hello Gaelyn.
I enjoy your pictures every Friday.
I recently vacationed in Washington and visited La Push. Beautiful area.
#329 next week for my Birthday.
Thanks Bonnie. I’m over due for a PNW adventure. #329 for next week. Happy Birthday!
I occasionally saw car clubs roll in to the park in various classics. No tow yet. #1966 for next week.
How do you remember Friday – it comes round faster than we can remember it LOL.
Love all the photos, the poppies are fabulous, Bryce is an amazing place and we are looking forward to your interpretation of it this year. Adolph is very cute, we both love the Bugatti and of course the Zebra, but the favourite for the week has to be you looking so happy as a 13-year-old, great photo.
2203 for next week please.
Have a good weekend Diane and Nigel.
I have a beautiful calendar to remind what day of the week it is. 😉
Thanks. Sure is fun to pull up some of those really old photos.
#2203 for next week.
It’s a surprise the traffic jams that exist when Borrego Blooms, and you have a better field of poppies nearby in Wickenburg. For next week I’d 1918, the year the dam at Lake Hodges was completed.
I don’t particularly like crowds. 😉 Hoping to find some more flowers next week. #1918 for next week.
I continue to admire your work and your photos!
“Mules are wide.” 🙂
Thanks. Ever ridden a mule?
You know, I keep forgetting a number! (Don’t tell the kids!) #1867
I won’t tell. #1867 for this week.
Great pictures here Gaelyn. Love Adolph and you at 13. You are both adorable. My favorites this week are my zebras-I had no idea they had such great coloring with the brown, almost looks like shading- and the last one of the cheery flowers. Great angle looking up through to the clouds and sky. Number 3366 for next week please.
Thanks. Zebra stripes are great camouflage. Hoping to see more flowers this week. #3366 for next week.
Love the photo of 13-year-old Gaelyn. We definitely traveled through life in the same era!
Thanks.
I love all your photos as usual. I’m looking forward to more pics from Bryce Canyon this summer.
Thanks. I’m hoping to get a new camera this summer.
Oh no, Gaelyn, where was I not to take part? May I enter my number at this late stage please? I’ve had 4530 in my head for days – no reason so please use it if I am still in time?
You are in time, so we’ll satisfy that #4530 that’s been rattling around in you head.
