This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including the first time I left the country in 1974, Mt St Helens after the eruption, and some little people.
Tredeuce chose #1923, “the birth year of my Dad who started the clean up of the Columbia River system in the 1950’s.” I think another clean up is need at the Salton Sea, where you can see the hazy line on the horizon. This is one of the many canyons in the badlands of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California. Taken 12-22-14.
#23 goes back to the summer of 1971, I was 17 going on 22, visiting my grandparents in Sacramento, California.
Jo chose #1707. A sort of close up view of the Vermilion Cliffs along State Route 89A in northern Arizona. This is like reading a book with every sedimentary layer telling a different story of the environment.
#07 is not from India yet many of the items for sale were at this International Market. In 1974, my then boyfriend and I drove to Florida then flew to Freeport Bahamas for a few days. Silly us, we couldn’t afford to do anything once we got there and ate a lot of $3 hotdogs at the Market plus walked the beach.
Lisa chose #9564, “for the number of things I have to do today.” I’m going to assume she exaggerated like I would claiming that many cars at the Yarnell Car Show in 2015.
#64, a sunset view from my 5th-wheel when I lived in Summit, Colorado while working at Mesa Verde for the summer.
Sherry chose #1947, “the year David was born.” Sadly, David recently passed away. This tree with heart is dedicated to this man with big heart for trees, life, and family. I am sorry for your loss Sherry.
Diane and Nigel chose #803. State Route 89 cuts through Echo Cliffs on the way to Page, Arizona.
#03 is a scanned print panorama taken by the pool at the Bahaman Princes were the boyfriend and I stayed back in 1974.
Gayle chose #1787. This foggy view was taken from Point Imperial overlook on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona on July 31, 2010.
#87, looking into the crater of Mount Saint Helens while hiking the Truman Trail when I worked at the monument summer 1992.
Yogi chose #7691. Just another beautiful desert sunset from my Plamosa Road camp near Quartzsite, Arizona March 2015.
#91 is one of several dioramas built by the CCC during the 1930s for the Mesa Verde Museum. Each one represents aspects of the lives of the Ancestral Puebloan people who built the cliff dwellings. Check out this link to see all the dioramas.
Jeff chose #180, “the cost of a replacement radio for the RV.” That’s almost more than the value of the old 5th-wheel I had in 2007 when this shot was taken through a window splattered with dog art of the visitor center at Crater Lake National Park, Oregon.
#80 is the eastern flank of Mt St Helens from the same hike as above.
Jennifer chose #89. A friend who dearly loves gnomes traveled with me from Oregon to Arizona in the fall of 2007. I pasted the gnome into several photos from our journey.
Mary Jo chose #422, “for the date of my husband’s hip replacement and hopefully the start of the road back to hiking again.” When they are ready to hike, I hope they’ll visit Grand Canyon where this would be the view south from the top of Angels Window on the North Rim.
#22, many of my film photos were bad to begin with, worse scanned, and no better digitized. But these shots can still trigger a memory of the 1974 Cadillac camping vacation in Michigan. This shot is at the mouth of the Presque Isle River into Lake Superior.
Mark chose #4565, “my favorite NGC galaxy to look at in the heavens.” The edge-on spiral Needle Galaxy should be visible to the naked eye with a magnitude of 9.5 yet could still be as difficult to see as an Angulate tortoise crossing the road at West Coast National Park in Langebaan, South Africa.
#65 for more animals. This pair of rascals lived at the California Living Museum in Bakersfield where I was an animal keeper in 1989.
My final choice this week is the Kachina by sculptor Dan Lutzick hanging in La Posada Hotel in Winslow, Arizona. I still haven’t written about my visit there last November with local friend Jim. This is just one of many memories I’ll carry of Jim who passed away Wednesday with very aggressive cancer. I am angry at cancer for taking away our loved ones before their time.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Hi Gaeliyn sorry I missed last week (doing exams) Wonderful photo’s bringing back many memories for you .Love the photo of the Vermillion Cliffs State Route 89 but my fav is Angels Window on the North Rim Grand Canyon. I guess you are getting excited with your new job Good luck. No 89 for next week please Happy weekend to you.
Exams are more important than the blog. I can tell you are a rock kind of gal. Yes, I am excited. #89 for next week.
I picked out that Presque Isle shot, even before I read the caption. That was the furthest west I went on my adventure from Detroit when I was still in high school.
Let’s do 1040 for next week, as I am going to do our taxes today.
J
I’m impressed, that was a really lousy photo. But sure was beautiful country. #1040 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn, my favorite is the window with dog art! But the one which tugs my heart is the last one where you mention your friend’s passing. I’m sorry. My number for next week is 4530. No reason. Just popped into my head this minute, Take care, my friend. Jo
I’ll bet you get a little dog art at your house. #4530 for next week.
I agree I am also angry at cancer, it is so cruel in every way.
We loved the photos today as always but my favourite is the one from the living museum. Raccons I presume.
That route through the echo cliffs reminds me of the last bit of Chapman’s Peak in Cape Town. I know it well there as I have cycled the tour so many times and that last bit is a relief to reach!!
1503 for next week please. Enjoy your weekend Diane and Nigel
They are Raccoons and were fun to watch play. I agree about those cliffs being much like parts of the Chapman’s drive. Although I knew about that race I didn’t realize you peddled it. Quite a feat in my mind. #1503 for next week.
I have peddled it 9 times, one short of getting my 10 year badge 🙁 Nigel has done it 7 times, one year he was in the UK and could not train, and the other he was ill and the Dr told him NO. I am though very proud of the fact that one year i did it just under 4 hours, 3 hours 58 minutes to be exact! Record for professionals are Men: 2:27:29 by Robbie Hunter (2008), and Women: 2:44:04 by Renee Scott (1991). You are though allowed 7 hours to complete the course before they stop you.
My condolences to Sherry and you, Gaelyn for your recent loss of loved and cared for family members and friends. I’m still in the grip of the painful loss of my daughter this January. Time will heal, somewhat, the pain, but never replace those we hold precious.
1898 the birth year of my much loved paternal grandfather. His loss still painful nearly 30-years later.
On a brighter note, the Daffodils are blooming in the Rogue Valley. Spring has Sprung with temps in the 70’s.
New comments still not posting.
It really is difficult to survive our family and friends.
Glad that spring is springing. Daffodils are among my favorite flowers.
#1898 for this week.
That pic(no. 22) reminds me of views along Chuckanut Dr. North of Bellingham,Wa. and out at the tip of Cape Flattery with its stunning ‘drop dead’ views. I highly recommend the fairly easy hike out to the Cape if one is in the area.
I have been around the Cape many times, fishing or sailing from Victoria to Portland/ Portland to Victoria annually.
Google Map – Cape Flattery, for over 5,000 photos.
They are all amazing! What a selection!!!! You have such adventures.
Thanks. #5106 for next week.
Oh, yes, #5106
Again no favorite this week, all great shots. I never tire of Mt St Helen’s having enjoyed the mountain before and was there during and after the ‘big boom’, and your fotos of the Grand Canyon really bring it to life.
For next wekk I’d like 317 (march 13) St. Patrick’s Day.
Thanks. It’s been fun to see the super oldies like St Helens. #317 for next week. Cheers to the green.
I really like #22, the miscolored print from an old analog camera. I love that kind of effect, as you suspect. I also like the shots you took in the Bahamas. I love the nostalgic feel of the photographs.
I know you like that old film look, and I do too in those old photos. Just glad they survived.
Dearest Gaelyn, I’m sorry I am late for the party. I am living in a fog these days. I love the picture of aspens though I’m sorry someone felt it was necessary or even OK to carve into the tree’s bark. David did love trees. I miss him terribly. I also really like the North Rim picture, the tortoise and the beautiful Kachina. I am so sorry to hear of your friend Jim’s death. Cancer is a vicious killer and I’m plenty angry at its unrelenting cruelty. On that happy note I’ll try # 7481 for next week if I’m not too late.
Late only happens on Thursday, so you’re good. #7481 for this week.
