This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by six readers including several blasts from the past.
Yogi chose #2222. Grand Canyon National Park offers some of the most amazing dark skies and every year has a Star Party in June. On the North Rim at least a dozen amateur astronomers donate their time and set up telescopes on the Lodge verandah for a week.
I choose 22 from his number, a lousy quality scanned from print image from the summer of 1971. Me with two cousins in front of a restaurant shortly before their parents put me on a plane, my first ever flight, to Sacramento where my grandparents lived and parents were visiting. I thought I was so cool at age 16, in leather hotpants, boots and too tight sweater, and was sure I’d be served a cocktail. Didn’t happen. Instead the 12-year old sitting next to me reassured me while landing in San Francisco when I was sure we’d land in the bay.
Jeff chose #1224, “the Christmas Eve in 1775 Padre Font observed the view from the point that would bear his name, noting in his diary “the sweepings of the earth.” This is one image from a six shot panorama from a viewpoint not in Anza-Borrego where the Padre name comes from. This is instead from Sunset View in Cedar Breaks National Monument in Utah where there could be more “sweepings of the earth” in a different color.
Diane and Nigel chose #902. They drove by the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park on the way to Bryce after their visit to me and the North Rim.
I choose the 02 from their number. Another old scanned print from the summer of 1970 of me in the ‘please don’t take my picture’ look.
Jodee and Bill chose #201. The view up from the bottom of Grand Canyon on the River trail was rather intimidating on my first rim to rim hike in 2008. It was Cinco de Mayo and I had nine miles to go up 5000 feet. My mantra for the last mile was “crusty, salty, margarita…” and then I was too exhausted to drink when I got to the top.
I chose 01 from their number, another scanned print. My Mom and Dad’s birthdays were three days apart in June. So in 1974 I took them to Diannas Greek restaurant in Chicago to celebrate. None of us went to the city much, them less than me. Dad drove his company Cadillac with me and the current boyfriend Kim and met another couple there. Had to leave the car keys with the parking lot attendant and Dad was nervous about that. Dinner at Diannas (sadly closed now) was an all evening event. Even with reservations there was always at least a 30 minuet wait in the bar. Now I don’t drink Ouzo but knew my folks would like it and they did. We all got pretty drunk and by the time we left there were only two cars in the parking lot, no attendant, but Dad’s keys hung on the hook. He drove out of the lot onto a one-way street with Mom yelling at him and finally got onto the freeway for home in the suburbs. He had to pull over once for me to get out of the car and puke. OMG, what a night to remember.
Sue chose #4315, “sorta when we got Mattie.” This is when I sorta got a shot of a Weaver on its nest while visiting West Coast National Park in South Africa.
I chose #15 from her number for yet another scanned print from 1974. A camping trip with a boyfriend and another couple to the Porcupine Mountains in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan. While cruising backroad in my Mom’s Cadillac we came across this uninhabited log cabin.
Sallie and Bill chose #733. Hybrid cattle/bison grazing on a meadow in the Kaibab National Forest near the entrance to the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park.
I chose #33 from their number for a final scanned print of Gracie, a bobcat born in captivity at the California Living Museum. I took this shot when I volunteered as an animal keeper while living in Bakersfield during 1989.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Hi Gaelyn, Somehow I missed joining in
last Friday! my FAVORITE image and story is the one of your mom and dad’s birthdays! My number for thee week is 66 — the age I turned on Wednesday. Hugs Jo
That birthday party is the only time I ever saw my parents kiss. Happy belated Birthday for your next week’s #66.
I like the idea of you choosing numbers from the other numbers, great idea to bring up some really old photos from the archives. I had to laugh about the car having to be stopped for you, I remember ouzo from a car club party when we lived in Mafikeng!!!!!!! 1502 for next week please. Hope all is well, have a good weekend, Diane and Nigel
I do enjoy seeing those oldies come up. But I hate ouzo. #1502 for next week.
Oh dear looks like I forgot to Join Friday Foto’s last week Sorry Gaelyn. My partner was not too well so I guess I was distracted. Anyway fantastic photo’s here and I love the one of your Mom and Dad on their anniversary. Also you in your hot pants, I remember them well, mine were black velvet and I wore them in the evenings. My fav this week of course is the bottom of Grand Canyon Cinco – de – Mayo. No 8779 for next week please. Enjoy your weekend.
I am sorry to hear about your partner and hope they are feeling better. I love the idea of velvet hot pants. #8779 for next week.
The personal stories mixed in with the beautiful panoramas was a great surprise this week. I also loved the story of your parents’ birthday celebration. What a fun night to have pictures of! I’ll try number 3445 for next week please.
I enjoyed the bison, but the vistas are amazing! #1923
Can’t beat those huge western views. #1923 for next week.
I too missed last weeks somehow, love the picture of your parents too.
Next week I would like #0214 please
If you subscribe, the notification didn’t go out. Welcome back. #0214 for next week.
“crusty, salty, margarita…” I really like your mantra, just the incentive to keep going. Our first shakedown trip in the RV was to Anza Borrego where we saw a bobcat (aka Lynx Rufus) and named the RV Rufus. The ‘pineapple express’ hammered San Diego! For next week I’d 1094 to represent the record setting 10.94 inches of rain Palomar Mountain received in a 48 hour period.
Great RV name and fortunate sighting. We in the west have all been hammered with rain. That’s a lot. #1094 for next week.
I would like to see 1121 next week. My favorite this week is the hot pants picture.
The hot pants story is definitely better than the photo. #1121 for next week.
Your photos are great but the best thing is the story about taking your parents out for their birthday. My number for next week is 1612
Thanks. I’m so glad to have a few of those really old photos. #1612 for next week.
More beautiful photos and delightful personal glimpses! Love my shot from the bottom of the canyon, probably not something I’ll ever see myself! The view at Capital Reef reminds me how much I enjoyed the Utah parks – we must get back there soon.
#4120 for next week please.
Thanks. I’m glad I hiked to the bottom of that big ditch when I could. I too need to explore Capital Reef more. #4120 for next week.
I like the way you gave us two pics for the “price of one” here…it’s fun to look at your old scanned prints and awesome as always to look at your more current scenery. Someone took a picture of some baby bobcats in the natural area right next to our RV Resort! But I will probably never come closer than your picture (or his) to one! The Weaver bird is great. I remember the crusty salty margarita that you couldn’t drink from before, and I love the story! I just asked Bill for a number between 1 and 9999 and he said 3. You will have to add instead of subtract to get two for us next time.
Glad you liked my super oldies. I’ve heard neighbors around here say there have been bobcats seen. #3 for next week.
I especially like the peaceful meadow scene of the hybrid cattle/bison. #5147 for next week, please.
Forest interspersed with meadows on the North Kaibab offers a wonderfully diverse landscape. #5147 for next week.
Hi, I’ve been reading for a long time but never joined in the fun. I would like to select 520, the month and year I hope to retire and get on the road! You are just a few years older than I am, but I well remember hot pants and ‘hip huggers’, yikes.
Thanks for joining in. #520 for next week.
#2222 caught my eye on the side of your current post. My partner has just finished spending the winter building a Dobsonian telescope like it. We are loading it into the camper in 10 days or so and heading to New Mexico from Vancouver Canada, for a Dark Sky event. Six months ago I would not have known what that pic was about!
I don’t know anything about telescopes so you’re way ahead of me. New Mexico should offer lots of dark skies. Enjoy!
