This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by eight readers and includes rugged rock, Ravens, and a cop stop.
TreDeuce chose #1924, “The birth year of James Baldwin [who wrote] ‘It is certain, in any case, that Ignorance, allied with Power, is the most ferocious enemy Justice can have.’” Looking up at the “Dragon’s teeth” right before a powerful storm while hiking in the Drakensburg Mountains, South Africa. I was not ignorant to possibilities yet survived natures’ justice not because of any social conventions in a land of much racial strife.
Jennifer chose #6942. Ravens are territorial and mate for life. Seems every overlook along the North Rim Grand Canyon’s scenic drive had a pair of Ravens. Here, the Vista Encantada couple hanging out on a dead Aspen, perhaps enjoying the view.
Jo chose #1953, “the year I was born.” One year older than me, we should celebrate eating swirls of ice cream. Which is what I am reminded of by these layers of sandstone at White Pocket on the Paria Plateau at the border of northern Arizona and southern Utah.
Diane and Nigel chose #1801. During monsoon when fog settles in Grand Canyon it may obscure the depths while framing a distant view. Taken July, 2010 from Cape Royal overlook on the North Rim.
Lisa chose #143. I am now unsure of the artist of this painting that hung in the museum when I worked at Mesa Verde National Park the summer of 2005. I assume it would depict a ceremony of the Ancestral Puebloans who built the cliff dwellings.
Yogi chose #6003. Good morning light and shadows from our cliff-side camp along the Indian Ocean at Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa.
Jeff chose #1884, “the year Helen Hunt Jackson wrote Ramona a novel of romance and discrimination that helped solidify SoCal’s unique identity.” The native San bushman who lived in the Drakensberg Mountains (same hike as above) and their stone art of at least 1500 years could have used an advocate and activist like Helen when British settlers tried to destroy their race.
Rita chose #8117. I miss the North Rim Kaibab National Forest fall colors as much as monsoon at Grand Canyon.
My choice, no I didn’t get stopped by the cop. Instead he sent this car and me around the down, dinging, and blinking RR gates.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Wow…the photo of the Dragon’s Teeth is my favorite this week, Gaelyn.
Let’s do 904 this week…a number that just popped into my head. 🙂
The Drakensberg Mountains were fantastic. #904 for next week.
Well my favourite this week is the same one I chose, those gorgeous colours at the North Rim Kaibab National Park they are just stunning. No 7598 for next week please. Have a great weekend Gaelyn.
The fall colors in the forest are as spectacular as the canyon colors. #7598 for next week.
I couldn’t pick a favorite. We had similar troubles shooting the lunar eclipse and came to the same conclusion: we need to practice night photography more before the next one. Your pictures still turned out much better than ours did. Number 2176 for next week, please.
Thanks. Just think how bad we’d have felt if the eclipse was totally visible and our photos came out bad. Practice, practice, practice. #2176 for next week.
Google ‘Astrophotography’ for tips on photographing the night sky and celestial bodies.
Google ‘Night photography’ for tips on shooting terrestrial and city photography.
Did you pause when you saw the cop? Even if I haven’t done anything, it’s weird!
Your vistas are amazing down there. We’re still under a blanket of snow. #743
You bet, always do.
One of the things I love about the desert are the big views. You just keep that snow up north. 😉
#743 for next week.
What a great set of photos and the Drakensberg brings back some amazing memories. I think our photo is the favourite, we love the monsoon photos in the canyon. 2501 for next week please, we should be back home but so much to do when we get there including passports that are about to run out! Keep warm and watch out for scorpions. Diane and Nigel
Thanks. I love seeing these memories pop up. Hope all is well. Safe journey home. #2501 for next week.
My favorite is the Canyon view framed by the fog cloud … as if it parted to show this beautiful scene just for you (and us now, thank you!). You’ve got some great memories today! Number 1220 next time?
Thank you. Inversion is above special at the canyon. It’s as fun to look back as it is to look forward. #1220 for next week.
Crows are some of my favorite people.
1792 for next week, the year Mary Wollistonecraft published ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Women’ delineating the inalienable rights of women and establishing the profound arguments for the modern women’s movement.
The Corvids are so intelligent. #1792 for next week.
Intelligent characters and pranksters who can recognize you from other humans.
Lovely collection of photosm as always. Hard to choose a favorite – but maybe between the Grand Canyon fog and the sandstone at White Pocket. I’ll choose #5555 for next week!
Thanks. I’m not surprised you’re partial to the SW rock. #5555 for next week.
I especially loved the fall colors in the Kaibab National Forest. My number for next week is 1919, the year Leonard Bernstein was born. He would have been a 100 years old this year.
I love the contrast of the golden aspen and evergreens. #1919 for next week.
OMW Gaelyn, my first post that I manage to play with you all, and the first image is of the sight which I see every day while driving to work, daily from the shop and especially when I’m preparing my accommodation units for guests! Then I am right under those mountains! The Central Drakensberg – Cathhkin Peak and Champagne Castle and the Dragon’s Back / Teeth. I immediately click on t he link to see your hike with my son, John! Yes, you and I are of the same vintage and I would love to share a swirly cone with you. When do you intend to visit SA again? My number for next week is 1302. My birth date! Jo
You have a wonderful view of those beautiful mountains. I think I’ve been in that strip where your shop is. I’d be in SA right now if I could afford it. #1302 for next week. Thanks for playing along.
All great photos!, Is this really the first time Jo jumped in? Beginners luck! We have our dental work done in TJ so not part of the official estimate. For next week I’d like 6000 the official estimate of Americans crossing daily into Algodones for dental visits.
Thanks. Jo and I have known each other 10 years and even met in South Africa. She’s had problems leaving a comment, plus amazingly busy. #6000 for next week.
