This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 10 readers and includes several stormy skies at Grand Canyon and in South Africa. I am intensely attracted to clouds and therefor administer a Facebook page for Nepholography.
Sherry and David chose #1000. The first time I saw lions at Kruger National Park, South Africa. These young brothers were with a pride settling in for the night on the warm pavement. So nonchalant, only 20 feet away, no worries they have plenty of prey.
Diane and Nigel chose #1101. Less than an hour after the above lion sighting we had barely made it back to camp before the gates closed at sunset in Kruger National Park.
George chose #7049. Cape Royal, my favorite place for sunset on the North Rim.
TreDeuce chose #1553, “The year Ann Boleyn changed England’s political allegiance with the church. Unfortunately it cost her and her brother their heads.” Look closely for tear drops on the changing Aspen leaf’s edge.
Jeff chose #1318, “the time on Jan 9th the Sea Shepherd came under a prolonged attack by poachers.” I was saddened by this story yet glad to know someone is looking out for the world’s smallest porpoise. Kind of like the National Park Service looking after our public lands while we enjoy a most iconic view of Grand Canyon from the North Rim. Here, you can sit on a bench towards the beginning of the short and narrow Bright Angel Point trail.
Jennifer chose #4325, one of three in a panorama. Having visited the conservatory in Chicago as a kid the Pearson Conservatory in St. George’s Park intrigued me during my tour of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Not nearly as big but oh so exotic.
Yogi chose #2019. During summer in Zion National Park you have to ride the shuttle in the canyon which runs with regularity and lots of stops for trails and views.
Pam and John chose #1011, one of two in a panorama. Point Imperial overlook on the North Rim offers an eastern view across Grand Canyon and the Marble Platform to Vermilion and Echo Cliffs at least 60 miles away. Amazing to see that far even with a nearby storm.
Dave chose #1955. No stormy skies like this at Grand Canyon for him in Mississippi.
Rita chose #3875. Another stormy view but this time of the Hogsbacks sitting on the stoop at my Never Daunted cottage over morning coffee. I could move to South Africa and live here forever.
My choice this week for a little humor.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Speaking of Zion and the Canyon, one of my favorite hikes in the park, or anywhere, is the Canyon Overlook Trail. Mostly level and about a mile round trip with spectacular views at every turn. It takes about an hour to complete unless you take a quite a few pictures… and you will.
Access is at the Canyon Overlook Trailhead/parking lot (just to the east of the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel on Route 9). Open year round and highly recommended by this trail hound.
Due to the excessive crowds, I haven’t visited Zion in a while. Even winter is getting busy.
Yes, crowded in popular areas and hikes. I have been on waiting lists for some back country hikes for several years now.
Speaking of January 9th, Jeff, that was my birth date 72 trips ago around old Sole.
For next week… 1924_ The birth year of James Baldwin.
“It is certain, in any case, that Ignorance, allied with Power, is the most ferocious enemy Justice can have”_ James Baldwin.
Hoping for clear skies for your photo/road trip adventure, Gaelyn.
Tre Deuce/Liberal Warrior.
Happy belated birthday young man. #1924 for next week.
Thanks, Gaelyn, especially for the “Young Man”, as still feel that way.”
The lions are my favourites! #6942
Seeing lions was a breathtaking experience. #6942 for next week.
Wow Gaelyn this post brought back memories for me – Hogsback was a favorite destination for us. Grant and I did several motorbike trips and stayed at Hogsback Inn. Thanks for sharing. Jo
Hogsback is a special place.
Very hard to pick a favourite here, every sky shot has its own personality and we love them all. I have never seen much of PE and that conservatory looks a good place to visit. 1801 for next week please. Take care and good luck for the moon shots. Diane and Nigel
Thanks. There is much to see in PE. #1801 for next week. Be well.
Gaelyn I’m a bit slow. My favorite is the photo you posted of the wheel chair parking signs.. And playing along in your Foto Friday, my number is 1953, the year I was born. Jo
That last shot was too good to pass up even though all I had was my phone. Thanks for playing along. #1953 for next week.
Once again, your photos of South Africa have me considering a visit sometime in the distant future. Your photos capture the beauty and your words the wonder. Number 143 for me next week. Good luck shooting the moon?!
Thank you for the lovely compliment. Definitely work on a visit to South Africa. I can connect you with an amazing guide. #143 for next week.
I love the lion pics. I talked to a woman this morning who had just got back from South Africa and she loved the lions although found it disconcerting when they made eye contact with her. 6003 for next week
Maybe she thought they were hungry. 😉 #6003 for next week.
Yes, My favorite is of the two lions in the road, the first photo, 1000. Something I meant to comment last week and it got loast in the shuffle, was how much fun it is to see you playing with words to make things fit with people’s choices and your current photo. Sometimes your linkages just crack me up they are so pertinent. Wish I could remember the one from last week, but I guess I will have to go back and read again. Hugs to you and glad you are getting out there soon with propane!
Gotta’ love lions. It’s fun to play with the comments if people leave more than just a number. Sometimes, it’s a stretch. I am so looking forward to a desert fix.
Tried to comment from the archives but that didn’t work. It was the comment about the Battle of the Hastings and relating it to the slot canyon fight between wind and water. Very creative, Gaelyn.
A couple hansom lazy lions had to be exciting to see! We’re planning the Canadian Rockies next summer, As you mention Zion may now be crowded in winter, but ugh!, without reservations we will not see anything 🙁
Looking forward to your eclipse pictures, despite a few clouds.
For next week I’d like 1884 the year Helen Hunt Jackson wrote Ramona a novel of romance and discrimination that helped solidify SoCal’s unique identity.
I had to remind myself to breath the first time I saw the lions. I look forward to your stories from the Canadian Rockies. #1884 for next week.
Wonderful variety of Photo’s Gaelyn. I love all of the Grand Canyon as you know, and WOW that conservatory is just stunning.!! My favourite this week however are those lovely Lions at Krugar National Park. I think number 8117 for next week please. Enjoy your week ahead.
Thanks Rita. I want to see lions again. #8117 for this week.
