This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 12 readers and includes some rather unusual critters.
Sherry and David chose #7172, one of eight in a panorama. It doesn’t get much better than a rainbow at Grand Canyon, even through the trees in a side canyon.
George chose #1519. I was roving on Bright Angel Point Trail on the North Rim when this crazy looking critter sauntered across the path. So of course, I stopped to take photos and visitors wanted to know what it was. I didn’t know then but looked it up. A Jerusalem Cricket, and never saw another one.
Diane and Nigel chose #401. It might look like this tree was tied in a knot. Interestingly, Ponderosa Pines can grow either straight grained or dextral, which is the spiral grain see here. Typically the growth is determined by soil depth, of which there is little here on the lava flow at Sunset Crater National Monument.
Cheryl chose #4023. Hogsback, South Africa, a Hobbity kind of place. The landscape went on and on, and I believe I saw fairies about.
Gayle chose #7517. Watched this zebra from an underground bird hide in Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa. Don’t you love how the mohawk takes away from the shortened ear?
Jodee and Bill chose #1480. Not all sunsets at Grand Canyon are spectacular. And neither are all photos.
Pam and John chose #1004. Rather difficult to put in perspective, this shot looks down into a closed shaft at the Eureka Mine at Death Valley National Park, California.
Sallie and Bill chose #208. The Great White Throne stands out against the orangey sandstone at Zion National Park, Utah from my first visit there in 2008.
Yogi chose #152. A 2007 visit to Crater Lake was hazy from nearby fires, the lake obscured by smoke, and even this drive across the Pumice Desert wasn’t ideal.
Jeff chose #106, for Jan, 6 “Three Kings Day celebrated in Mexico with gifts and feasts.” Instead of a crown, this snail carries its house on its back. Interesting gift, no thanks for eating. When I lived in Oregon in 2007 I saw a lot of slugs and snails while hiking in the Siskiyou National Forest. I always imagine some little people riding on their backs.
TreDeuce chose #1066, the year of “The Battle of Hastings.” I believe the wars fought at Antelope Slot Canyon were between powerful water and soft sandstone instead of between the French and English.
Rita chose #7934. The Desertview Watchtower located on the South Rim of Grand Canyon is a must see for both the architecture and the view.
My choices this week, Sierra likes to go outside but she wasn’t overly happy with the snow. And a glorious sunrise from last Saturday morning taken from my yard in Yarnell. See, I do get up for these occasionally.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
So many great pictures this week. Love my rainbow over the canyon. That is a really gorgeous sunrise at your place. Glad you were there to see it and show it to us. Beautiful shots of the great white throne and the watch tower. Perfect locations for both. So envious of your being at Antelope Canyon to take that inspiring picture. So much beauty this week. #1000 for next week please.
Thanks Sherry. Sure glad I went to Antelope Canyon back in 2009 because I hear it’s really become a zoo now. #1000 for next week.
Love our photo, love wood, and the slot canyon is just magic. I agree though the sunrise is fantastic, I know the feeling I do not often see them either!! 1101 for next week please. Take care Diane and Nigel
Thanks. That really is an interesting chunk of wood. If sunrises came up later in the morning all year, I’d see more of them. 😉 #1101 for next week. Hope you are well in the UK.
More amazing photos this week. Wow loved that cricket have never seem one either a rare find.
Think for next week will try for 7049 please
Not all that many insects seen at the North Rim but the ones there are big and obvious. #7049 for next week.
Thanks, Gaelyn. Still haven’t visited any of the slot canyons, but I have spent time on Google Satellite mapping them out.
The geological war that created the slot canyons, as you know, predates the English & French and will still be going on long after they(English & French) are gone.
I recommend other slot canyons than Antelope because of the crowds.
And there are many that few realize exist.
I would selfishly prefer to enjoy them without other human intrusion and enjoy a kind of spiritual experience.
1553 for next week. The Year Ann Boleyn changed England’s political allegiance with the church. Unfortunately it cost her and her brother their heads.
I’m sure, or just too difficult to get to. I’ve enjoyed that solitude in a slot. #1553 for next week.
The difficulty adds to the experience.
So many rush through these amazing places like they are checking off a bucket list.
Abbey says it best in your signature.
Always great pictures, there’s seldom a disappointing sunrise or sunset photo, but I’m partial to the snail with all its colors and textures. For next week I’d like 1318, the time on Jan 9th the Sea Shepherd came under a prolonged attack by poachers.
I love snails! #1318 for next week.
I LIKE the Zebra. Thanks.
Did I forget to visit last week? Sigh. I get to comments and forget which comments I had!
The cricket is amazing. I hear you, re: never seeing one again. I’ve had insects like that.
The wood is wonderful. The rock is my fave! #4325
Yea, that cricket was wild. #4325 for next week.
Marvelous shots, I love Antelope Canyon!! and your other shots. Next week is 2019 in honor of our current year.
Thanks. #2019 for next week.
Lots of very cool photos! The Jerusalem Cricket is really cute and colorful. That zebra is so darn adorable:) I do believe we saw that mine in Death Valley! Poor Sierra, she isn’t enjoying this wet winter. Lovely sunrise!
Next week 1011
Thanks. I think the zebra is cuter than the cricket. There were a lot of mines in that area of Death Valley. #1011 for next week.
Great pictures Gaelyn. I’ve been having trouble leaving comments, but I certainly enjoy your posted pictures.
How about #1955 next week.
Thanks!
Thank you Dave. I was hoping the comment problem was fixed. #1995 for next week. Enjoy the beach.
Wonderful photo’s Gaelyn. I especially like the one of Rainbows over Grand Canyon but my favourite is as yours this week, Sunrise at Yarnell, What a wonderful sight to wake up to. No 3875 for next weeks photo Friday please. Have a great weekend..
A postful of joy and whimsy here Gaelyn! Your happier mood is shining through (on your comments) — the pictures would be happy and joyful no matter what mood you were in … and in fact,I am sure are making all of your visitors happier! Me for sure. Love ours which seems personally chosen — Zion is one of our favorite places. As usual, never know whether I better love your pictures of places we’ve been or the virtual adventure of sharing your ‘safaris’ in places where we’ll never go. All great, all fun.
Thank you Sallie. I feel so much happier this year.
