This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 14 readers and includes several examples of my love for rocks, flower induced memories, and my favorite hotpants.
TreDeuce chose #1923, “the year my father was born.” This shot over Grand Canyon was at the birth of a new day during August monsoon season from the Grand Lodge.
Diane and Nigel chose #1412. I know they are familiar with South African Baboons. This drive-by shot in Kruger National Park was through the truck window as they sometimes jump onto/into vehicles.
George chose #520. If you’re ever in or near Flagstaff I recommend a drive north on SR89 to visit Wupatki National Monument.
Lisa chose #21. Oh, but I was only 16. Standing between my Aunt and Uncle during the summer of 1971 just before they put me on my first airplane flight from LA to Sacramento. I was trying to look old enough to be offered a cocktail. Didn’t happen. And when the plane touched down in San Francisco I thought we were going into the Bay. Also didn’t happen.
Sue chose #1214. I am always happy to see the lilacs bud in Yarnell. As a kid in Illinois I used to sit under the backyard hedge of lilacs and just breath deep.
Sherry and David chose #1220. And yet another plant that’s nice in Yarnell, I just step outside to pick fresh thyme.
Gayle chose #1986. With morning views like this from camp I’d hike in the Drakensburg Mountains in South Africa again and again. Yet now I’d need a sherpa to carry the backpack.
Pam and John chose #2141. I ♥ nature’s sculptures. The sandstone Esplande rock layer reveals some interesting erosional shapes at Toroweap along the rim of Grand Canyon.
Yogi chose #1158. Returning to the North Rim from Flagstaff on SR89 and approaching where the Colorado River caved through Vermilion Cliffs to the left and Echo Cliffs to the right.
Rita chose #3289. Although I’m not overly fond of spiders I love webs. Such amazing construction I could watch them for hours. Some of the Garden Orb webs seen in Addo Elephant National Park were over 10 feet across. And sometimes a lot of them together spanned 30 feet in South Africa.
Jennifer chose #164. Another love affair with rock. I met the 1.8 billion year-old Vishnu Schist at the bottom of Grand Canyon during my first rim to rim hike across the big ditch in Spring of 2008.
Jodee and Bill chose #121. I create and collect jewelry. This hand-strung choker of 4-strand freshwater pearl accented with Swarovski crystals with a vintage rhinestone and sterling silver box clasp is still for sale for $45 if your interested.
Jeff chose #419, “the date Google has announced to shutter its Google+ offering.” I rarely use it. But I had to hit the camera shutter six times for this panoramic view of Grand Canyon and the San Francisco Peaks beyond from Angels Window overlook on the North Rim Grand Canyon.
Sallie and Bill chose #5120, “because I would like to have another picture of the Heritage Days…” And they did, one snap after the shot from last week of Derek Suwaima-Davis hoop dancing.
My choice of Monday morning’s visitor seen outside the door about 60 feet away, Mr. Coyote found the semi-frozen water bowl.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Merry Christmas, Happy Solstice,
or whatever you may or may not celebrate
The first time I visited the North Rim was in 1989 during a 7,700 plus motorcycle ride visiting national parks and monuments and Pueblos in the west including some Canadian parks in B.C.
Nearing the lodge I very badly had to pee, so we parked the bikes and I ran into the forest to find a tree to get behind when suddenly, and shockingly, there was the unguarded rim of the canyon. Had it been at night, I could have ran right over the edge.
1187 _ The year the Kurdish sultan, Saladin, captured Jerusalem, sending the Crusaders safely back to the sea. Such benificence is in short supply in the Middle East these days.
Driving into the North Rim for the first time often surprises visitors with the dense forest obstructing distant views, and the rim. #1187 for you.
And in memory of my daughter who died this last weekend, could you select a picture from your archives Gaelyn. It would be appreciated.
I’m, once again, painfully reminded, that parents should never outlive their children.
I will be doing my annual Winter Solstice hike in her memory, and her sister’s memory, today.
I am sorry for your loss. Enjoy the memories on your Solstice hike.
Thanks for the wonderful photo fun Friday always fun lets try 918. next week please.
Thanks for joining in George. #918 for you next week.
Hi Gaelyn, I must say I do not like spiders or spiders webs but I was not to know that when I picked the number last week. Anyway, I love the photo of you age 16., such an exciting age.My favourite this week is looking over the Grand Canyon from the Grand Lodge. May I have No 5597 for next week please. Have a great X,mas and we will resume Foto Friday in the New Year.
Oh to be that young again, with today’s knowledge in mind. 😉 #5597 for next week.
I love fresh water pearls! Always fun to see throwback pics of you – girl, look at that mini skirt :-)))) Beautiful web, I’m always amazed by the weavers. Solstice Blessings Gaelyn, may the returning light bring you much happiness.
#7211 for next week please
I think 16 could be the most fun fashion years for many girls. Thank you for the blessing and a return to you all. I am looking positively into that new light. #7211 for next week.
That’s really fun! My daughter we call ‘Rock Girl” as she is a hydrogeologist! #9791
P.S. I love the hotpants!!!!
Sounds like an interesting job. #9791 for next week.
Of course the photos are always fun. I remember short-shorts, I like the flash backs. But I’ll pick my choice as you did such a great job of piecing together the panorama.
I checked and 1889 was recently chosen, so for next week I’d like 925 on Wednesday Sept. 25, 1889 Temple Beth Israel opened its doors in San Diego and continues to open its doors to all faiths.
Thanks Jeff. I do enjoy being taken back. And in fact, have been taking panoramas since nine-years old with my second hand Brownie Box and taped together on the fridge. Wish I still had some of those. #925 for next week.
Great photos, my favorite is “my” photo. Next week, lets see, how about 2891.
Thanks Alan, glad you like those big open spaces. #2891 for next week. Merry Christmas to you and the family.
Thank you for the gift … ‘my’ picture was just exactly what I ordered. (Next best to being there.) Merry Christmas and/or Solstice (only a tiny bit late)….. #6858 (no reason, part of a number I see on my bulletin board). What do you do if somebody accidentally asks for a number you just recently used?
You’re welcome. You just got lucky. Yet almost every number comes multiple times in my files. I try to take the oldest shot not already seen online. If I start running out of numbers, I need to take more photos. 😉 #6858 for you next week. Merry Christmas!
Every time you show pictures of the Drakensburg Mountains I love them. SO green and lush looking. Great picture of you in the shorts and boots but the best is uncle’s white sox and aunt’s white pumps. But the wow is the close great shot of the coyote. What neighbors you have.He looks very healthy. How about # 9999 for next week. And Happy Holidays to you as well.
You would love hiking in the Drakensburg. I listen to the coyotes sing almost every night but don’t see them often. #9999 for next week.
I commented previously on this!! I remember distictly saying I love the green of the drakensburg, I was sad I had missed the hoop dancing and how I loved the year of mini’s and boots………………….. I aslo commented on the baboon, they seem to enjoy this pose – typical!!
I also asked for 2112 for next week!!!! All the best from us both.
I wonder what happened to the last comment? Dang baboons, let it all hang out. #2112 for this week.
