This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by seven readers featuring various canyons. In addition are a few older photos that never see the light of day. Prior to 2014 while labeling photos I assigned numbers starting with 01 each month so there are a lot of moldy oldies.
Jim and Diana chose #206, one of two in a panorama from my first rim to rim hike across Grand Canyon in 2008. At that time the knees were good so down hill from the North Rim to the bottom was pretty easy. However, coming back up on the Bright Angel Trail I thought this set of switchbacks on the Devils Corkscrew was going to kill me. And, although never easy, it did get easier every time hiked.
Diane and Nigel chose #712. First visit to South Africa in 2010 included stops along the way to Kruger National Park. One of my favorites was Bourkes Luck Potholes in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve.
#12 from May 1988 of my husband and stepson sailing our Tanzer on Lake Union in Seattle, Washington.
Sherry and David chose #5119. I smile when Native American Heritage Days activities come up for them because they actually attended one year. I hope they got to see International Champion Hoop dancer Derek Suwaima-Davis.
From the summer of 1970, #1 is carp swarming next to a boat dock and feeding on french fries at The Clown, a floating boat-in, on Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri while on family vacation.
Jodee and Bill chose #5590. Could be almost anywhere in the world except for driving on the left side of the road on the way to Port Edward, South Africa.
I began my Ranger career summer of 1992 at Mt St Helens and during training hiked into the volcanoes crater. #90 are hummocks, huge multi-story apartment building size pieces that slid off the mountain during the 1980 eruption.
Rita chose #6666, a well used number bringing us to March 2017. Sure glad Jeff recommended Fossil Falls where I’ve now camped a couple times along SR395 in California. This ancient lava flow has no fossils or falls but is an interesting place to wander around.
#66 goes back to June 1989, this Harris Hawk was one of many birds of prey I fed as an animal keeper at the California Living Museum (CALM) in Bakersfield, California.
Jennifer chose #1098. The mouth of Natural Bridge Canyon where I went on a Ranger led hike in Death Valley National Park during my first visit there in 2009.
#98 is the edge of the blast zone from my 1992 summer at Mt St Helens. Notice all the growth 12 years after the eruption.
Jeff chose #518 for “the day Mt St Helens blew,” and left behind some of the above views. But not this view of fall colors at the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park in 2008.
Back to The Clown with #18 during summer of 1970 and that would be my Dad’s boat tied to the dock. We ate a lot of hamburgers here over vacation and they were good but I always wondered if we were there so frequently because the waitresses wore bikinis.
My choice from last Saturday night.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.

Our paths cross again with the requisite time distortion. I spent 2010 & 11 living in Ballard while doing my last major project.
Fun times were spent on Lake Union dodging float planes during the Duck Dodge sailing on the classic, NW famous, wooden sloop ‘Susan’. Too much fun, always.
Wednesdays found me on Commencement Bay racing/drifting on another slippery wind driven big canoe. Weekends you would find me crewing on another hole in the water on the Sound anywhere from Olympia to Port Townsend.
While good times, well spent, can be found sailing the Sound, nothing beats putting a reef in sailng on S.F. Bay.
Tanzers are good boats. Raced against a few on the Columbia River.
1923 the year my father was born.
Cheers
Seems like our paths should cross in real time with all the places we’ve both been to in the past. I remember crewing on a friends big Hunter for the Duck Dodge. Actually lived aboard the Tanzer for a summer. Only been on the Bay once. #1923 for next week.
We have a serious speed problem here with the WiFi and I can only load each photo separately!!! Thank goodness the icon allows me to at least do that!
What memories, the first time I saw Blyde River Canyon was on a camping trip with my mother in 1979.
I am now in the throes of packing, we are on our way to the UK on Monday for 6 weeks caring for FIL! Will try to connect when I have the time. Have a great Christmas hopefully with friends. Ours will be very quiet with just the 3 of us. 1412 for next week please. Warm hugs Diane and NIgel
I figured you’d been to Blyde River Canyon. Hope you have a better signal in the UK. Safe travels and enjoy the holidays. #1412 for next week. Hugs.
Love all you photos and especially the ones from the past. , try 520 for me please.
Thanks George. #520 for next week.
Beautiful photos! The potholes look like an interesting formation. I don’t think I’ve ever seen potholes in that configuration before. You may yet inspire me to go to South Africa with your beautiful photos and the adventures you describe alongside them. Number 21 for next week, please!
I highly encourage a visit to South Africa, there is so much to see. #21 for next week.
Blyde River Canyon, number 712 was my favorite. I have no idea if I will ever manage to get to South Africa, but your photos certainly do inspire me to think about it. It will take me a couple of years to recuperate from this last trip financially, so hopefully by then I will still feel like jumping on an airplane for 12 hours or so. I’ll play this week, how about 1214 for today.
Keep on saving and I will too, once I get a job, for a journey in South Africa, and the awful long flight to get there. #1214 for next week.
Beautiful moon shot! I thought the rim to rim shots would be my favorites. And then I saw the Bourkes Luck Potholes. WOW!!! Also love the hoop dancer. I do believe he’s the one we saw. Just amazing! SO beautiful! I’ll try 1220 for next week.
Thanks Sherry. Need to have a bloggers trip to South Africa. We’d see different kinds of dancers. Derek has been dancing on the North Rim for many years. #1220 for next week.
I especially like the Potholes photo….it’s WONDERFUL.
I grew up on Lake Washington. My parents had a small cabin cruiser & we spent many weekends on the boat… going thru Lake Union on our way to the Locks & into Puget Sound…then to wherever.
Here’s a guess for next week: 1986
Thanks. Nature’s powerful water is the best sculpture ever. I loved power boating as a kid and water skiing on the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Ballard locks was always entertaining yet the Sound was not usually an easy place to sail. #1986 for next week.
We did the Ranger lead hike at Natural Bridge Canyon when we visited Death Valley a couple years ago. It would have been great having you as the Ranger. The Bourkes Luck Potholes are fantastic!! What an amazing place.
Next week #2141
I’ve applied for a winter job at Death Valley many years with no luck and would love to lead that hike. #2141 for next week.
I always enjoy this meme you have done for years. This week my favorite is the Bourkes Luck Potholes. Very cool, almost like something you would see in the US southwest.
Take care and my number for next week is 1158.
Thanks. I’m amazed I’ve stuck with it and appreciate that you and other readers have too. There were several places in South Africa that reminded me of the Southwest. #1158 for next week.
Fantastic photos of featuring various canyon.
have a great day
Thank you Tanza.
Hi Gaelyn It looks like the Bourkes Luck Potholes are a favourite this week, its mine too. Pity there are no fossils in Fossil Falls .Incredible photo of it. I think I will go for No 3289 for next week. Have a great week end.
I’m not surprised folks like natures sculptures of the potholes. #3289 for next week.
They are all fabulous. The potholes are amazing, though. Your comments are so fun: the bikinis!!! #164 for next week!
Thanks Jenn. The potholes were very cool to see. #164 for this week.
My bridge looks similar to those we’ve crossed, but that green landscape is amazing. Love, love those potholes in South Africa. Wonderful to have the opportunity to interact with that beautiful hawk.
#121 for next week please.
Working with wildlife was quite the experience though also a bit of personal conflict. #121 for this week.
The Bourkes Luck Potholes seem to be the hands down favorite, mine too. For a distant runner up I’ll really like the way you captured Saturn in your moon shot. For next I’ll take 419 the date Google has announced to shutter its Google+ offering.
I’m not surprised the potholes were such a favorite. Thanks, I did score on the moon shot handheld. #419 for this week.
I caught up on all the lovely pictures in both Fridays I missed. If I’m not too late, can I have 5120 next week, because I would like to have another picture of the Heritage Days (but if that doesn’t work I would take whatever came up). I enjoyed the Mt St Helens memories — and all of the other pictures from both weeks. As always. If you’ove already made the post for friday, just ignore this and I will try again next week. We are back in Florida and almost organized.
You are not too late so #5120 it is.
