This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including two mighty rivers, grand canyons, and an artist’s expression.
Rita chose #8999. Last year in February I was introduced to and fell in love with the Sonoran desert. This sunset shot was taken from my camp near Darby Well Road just south of Ajo, AZ.
TreDeuce chose #1928, “the year my dear mother was born.” My mother, also born in ‘28, couldn’t understand why I traveled to South Africa. However she enjoyed the photos of unique wildlife, and distant landscapes like the Drakensburg Mountains I was fortunate enough to backpack into during my 2010 visit.
Diane and Nigel chose #1611. This (unidentified) sweet little flower grew along the Sterkspruit Falls Trail near the Monks Cowl camp a couple days before the Drakensburg hike above.
Patti and Abi get #43 for the number of characters in their last comment. A scanned print from summer 1996 when I worked for US Fish & Wildlife and lived with this front door view of the Columbia River and Mount Hood in the distance.
Jenn chose #1979. Cape Royal overlook at the end of the North Rim’s scenic drive offers a rare view of the Colorado River in the depths of Grand Canyon.
Gail chose #1013, “the current time.” This panoramic shot of Havasu Falls was taken the one time I hiked into Havasu Canyon, home to the Havasupai people. My favorite shot this week.
Yogi and random chose #1784. Although not the best photo example, this shot certainly shows the magic of inversion at Grand Canyon.
Jeff and Fran chose #1240, because they “watched the Baja 1000 as they sped past post 240.” The local terrain on the far side of the old and new Navajo Bridges might be as rugged as some of the Baja track.
Jodee and Bill chose #5470. Because of their recent travels along the east coast they may have seen some sunrises over the Atlantic Ocean. Yet much like me they are not always early risers. Glad I was up for this sunrise over the Indian Ocean near camp in Scottburgh, South Africa during my 2014 visit.
Sherry and David chose #8000. 2014 Artist in Residence Steward Thomson makes photos and high end jewelry. Difficult to tell which inspired which. The pendant is an Australian Boulder Opal. Many national parks sponsor an Artist in Residence program. This was from Grand Canyon but sadly they ended the program.
Sallie and Bill chose #1128, their 61st anniversary next week. I’m guessing in all their years of travel this is not an unfamiliar view of the San Francisco Peaks seen along SR89 heading south towards Flagstaff, Arizona. Happy Anniversary!
My choice this week shows how the Cottonwood tree next to the wash on the property line is showing signs of Autumn here in Yarnell.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.

I have to agree with you on a favourite today, the Havasu Falls is fabulous, but then the sun set and the sunrise are fabulous as well. Like you it is not often I see sunrise!!! I wonder what ‘our’ liitle flower is, I am sure my book of British wild flowers isn’t going to help me discover.
2311 for next week please. Have a great weekend, Happy Thanksgiving, Diane and Nigel.
Thank you. I’ll bet Joan could name that flower. #2311 for next week.
What a coincidence! I love the North Rim photos best! Not that any aren’t wonderful. It is such an interesting journey you have had, my dear.
#1985 for next week.
Thank you. #1985 for next week.
Our tracks cross again. I lived in the Columbia River Gorge in the 80’s at Northwestern Lake…now gone… and still spend time with friends at a farm on the Washington side directly across from Mosier on the Rowena syncline. I have been visiting The Farm now for forty years. The Farm is a photographer’s paradise with unparalleled views of the gorge. I still own property in the area.
You are obviously a traveler. I know where Northwestern Lake was. The Gorge is gorgeous for certain. No number this week?
Travel… when the fever hits, I go.
Heading to Death Valley and then to your area in a few weeks. I have family in Sun City West. Will be doing some local hiking around Phoenix then to Socorro then 380 to N.E. Texas.
1923… the year my dad was born.
There has been and continues to be a considerable amount of work done on restoring the old Columbia River hwy. Between Multnomah Falls and Hood River.
Cheers!
I also love the Havasu Falls photo the best – beautiful ! Next week I choose 2019, looking forward to the new year ahead, please.
Thanks. Havasu is a must see. #2019 for next week.
Boy there are some fantastic photographs this week. The Cape Royal Overlook shot is really perfect. Such distinct color. That’s a calendar picture and so is the Havasu Falls picture. I would love to see those falls in person. I’ve seen a lot of waterfalls but none more beautiful than that and your photograph is outstanding. I also like the New Navajo bridges. Great camera work there and on the sunrise over the Indian Ocean. Glad you got up for that one. You are such a fine artist Gaelyn as these photographs show. I’d like #7892 for next time please.
Thank you. You’d love the hike to and the falls. So different in the desert than your recent waterfall adventures. #7892 for next week.
Great photos as usual. My favorite is the sunrise over the Indian Ocean. My number for next week is 6666 because it is my brother’s 66th birthday and we took a bunch of photos on Route 66 to celebrate.
Thanks. Nice way to celebrate. You both look much like your dad. Happy belated birthday to your brother. #6666 for next week.
Some really spectacular photos this week, Gaelyn. I love the inversion at the Grand Canyon, the sunrise over the Indian Ocean, and the sunset on Darby Wells Road. But my favorite is the Havasu Falls photo…wow!!!!
Next week #5211
Thanks. Inversion at the canyon is special and so is Havasu. #5211 for next week.
Cape Royal is a close second to Havasu Falls this week. I trust you and Sierra had a Happy Thanksgiving. For next week I’d like 1621 the year of the first Thanksgiving.
Thanks. Sierra and I had a quiet Thanksgiving day at home. #1621 for next week.
Wonderful photo’s as always Gaelyn. I love the Sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean and that of the Navajo Bridges. My favourite however, is the Havasu Falls that photo is spectacular. No 4932 for next week please. Have a good week ahead.
Thank you Rita. The hike in and out of the canyon was totally worth it because of the waterfalls and blue/green waters. #4932 for next week.
That sunrise is spectacular – definitely worth getting up early for! Love the falls!!
#9060 next week please.
Thanks. Worth getting up early occasionally. #9060 for next week.
I love the sunrise and ‘our’ picture really does seem as if it were destined to be ours. Yes, we have definitely driven that road and seen that view, but have not taken such a good picture of it!….. Not choosing a number this time, because if all goes according to plan next Sunday will be my end of the season post before we leave for our winter home-away-from-home. (And i won’t have time to visit blogs during the following week.) See you next month! Same time, same station, different place.
Thank you for being such a faithful friend. Have a wonderful journey to FL. I look forward to your posts from there.
