This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 10 readers including lots of Southwest rock along with the Colorado River.
Yogi and random dot org chose #2197. A Vervet Monkey lookout at Camdeboo National Park. These monkeys are seen all over South Africa and are the most obnoxious animals next to baboons. They act kind of like squirrels in a park begging food and generally getting into trouble.
Steve chose #1952. As I always told visitors, there’s no bad view of Grand Canyon, but, I really like the dramatic skies during monsoon season the best.
Diane and Nigel chose #1210. From day four of rafting the Colorado River in 2011. We ran Lava Falls rapid that day, the biggest and most exciting.
Rita chose #5938. Sunsets are universally beautiful. This shot is over the Indian Ocean at Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa from my last visit in 2014.
Jeff chose #1706, “the year of Ben Franklin’s birth, as I am reading a biography.” I highly recommend reading a biography about John Wesley Powell, the first known white man to raft the Colorado River which lies only miles away from where this shot was taken of Cliff Dwellers Lodge along SR89A in northern Arizona. Also a great place to stop for lunch. (I had to stretch on that one Jeff.)
Jodee and Bill get #17 for the number of words in their comment. I was seven weeks old in my mother’s arms and she looks bored to me. Or maybe very tired.
Sherry and David chose #5874. Another pretty sunset, this time over the Salton Sea, which isn’t a sea at all, taken from my camp at Corvina Beach. It was wonderful weather and great bird watching during that February 2015 visit, but can be a hit or miss place depending on which way the wind blows.
Pam and John chose #7210. Took this shot on a Ranger led geology talk. The granite boulders in my home town of Yarnell are much like these in Joshua Tree National Park. Maybe that’s why I like them both so much.
Sue chose #1106, “since that is the day I have to get on another airplane.” She just returned from doing a lot of walking in Italy, thank goodness for stairs instead of this rocky terrain. I didn’t do a lot of hiking while rafting the Colorado River but on day three walked a little ways up Matkatamiba Canyon. If you ever get a chance to float the Colorado River, GO!
Gail chose #1358, “the number of miles we recently traveled in a two week journey around parts of Colorado, Utah and Arizona.” I sure hope she made it to Grand Canyon, and maybe even the Point Imperial overlook on the North Rim where this panoramic shot was taken during a delightful monsoon storm in September 2009.
My choice this week, the view from my desk with Sierra getting a view above. Can you guess what’s going on here?
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.

Monsoon skies and pictures that include the front of a boat are two of my favorite types of pictures, and this week had both. Number 8152 for me this week please, Gaelyn.
Can’t go wrong with dramatic skies and that river journey was the trip of a lifetime. #8152 for next week.
Lots of great photos, as always, but my favorite was the raft on the river in 2011. Yes, I did raft the Colorado, but from Moab to Hite through Cataract Canyon for 6 nights 7 days. In a paddle boat with 6 other women with an oar boat with us for support. We flipped in Five and swam a mile. Got a bit cocky. 22 more rapids to go and we were all scared to death after that one! But by the time we hit Hite none of us wanted to leave the river. I loved hiking in Dark Canyon, and up to the Maze from the Confluence. Unforgettable. No clue if I will ever get back to the Colorado through the Grand Canyon, but being on that river is truly incredible.
Thanks. I would love to raft the entire river. Your trip sounds outstanding. Yet I’m glad to have stayed in the boat. These are the kinds of experiences we will remember forever.
Ha ha, Sierra must be watching a bird or similar, thinking about breakfast!!!! As always a great selection, would love to have done the rafting down the Colorado so I guess a view from the raft is the next best thing. My favourite is the Vervet monkey lookout with a perfect view,
211 for next week please. Have a great weekend, Diane and Nigel.
The hummingbirds torment her and thank goodness are too fast for this huntress. I would gladly raft the Colorado River again, and again. So few get the opportunity. Was always entertaining to watch the Vervet’s antics. #211 for you next week. Hope your Autumn weather holds a bit longer.
I like the first shot the best. I had never heard of Vervet monkeys before so you have educated me again. My number for next week is 7912
When I quit learning I’m dead. #7912 for next week.
Can’t get enough of those pictures of the canyon. Hope Sierra can’t do anything but look. Is she a jumper? Cute little you look about the age of my new grandson. Love that picture on your Colorado River trip and the one of the boulders in Joshua Tree with the holes. Especially that one that’s nearly a keyhole. I’ll take 1106 for next week. Really hoping for a change in the morality of our politics and its discourse.
I’m glad Sierra isn’t a jumper, or all that fast of a huntress. #1106 for all.
I liked all the photos, but especially the one of Sierra watching the hummingbird – my cats do the same thing under my hummingbird feeder. We did not make it to the Grand Canyon on our trip because we were trying to avoid crowds, and it seemed most places were very crowded except for more remote areas like the Grand Staircase Escalante areas, which I loved. #1455 for next week please
I don’t blame you for wanting to avoid crowds on vacation and even though the North Rim isn’t as busy as the South it’s still relatively busy. Especially compared with the Grand Staircase. Wise choice. #1455 for next week.
About the time I was going to post which photo I liked the best, it would change to another one, then another. Yes, the Grand Canyon is always beautiful. The view from the raft was fantastic and that last photo of your cat was an all-time classic.
I am going to go with #138 this week.
I never tire of seeing the canyon and from the river was an exceptional experience. #138 for next week.
Love our photo and Joshua Tree!! Lots of rocks this week, my favorite:)
#1101
I never tire of rocks. #1101 for next week.
I love all of these photo’s Gaelyn and its difficult to choose a favourite but I will go for The Grand Canyon with that wonderful dramatic sky.Mind you I like rafting the Colorado river. No 7099 for next week please. Have a lovely weekend.
Thanks Rita. Doesn’t get much better than Grand Canyon under a dramatic sky, unless you’re on the river. #7099 for next week.
As usual all great photos, but your sunsets and desert are usually my favorite. For next week I’d like 2131 the address of the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park.
Thanks Jeff. I do take a lot of sunset shots. Sunrise just comes too early. 😉 #2131 for next week.
My favorite is the one with Sierra. She is beautiful. I would like 1417 for next week. I hope you’re enjoying autumn in Yarnell, it’s been stunning in NY State this year.
Sierra really is a beautiful gal. Colors are just starting to turn in Yarnell. #1417 for you next week.
Sierra! No!!!! )))) (but a girl can dream!). Beautiful selection of photos — as always. I am back in blogland and will take #55 — the age of my youngest child, who just had a birthday … I completely do not understand how my children can be the same age as I am. I love the Colorado River pictures today; a trip I’ll have to enjoy vicariously (because of my great age!). By the way, We got the calendar and we love it!
Thanks. Sierra is not the fastest huntress but has recently begun to alert me to scorpions on the floor. Sure glad you like the calendar. You get #55, which is not old. 😉
You’ve led quite the life! I enjoy your photos.
Favorite, favorite! How can anyone pick just one? I love your photos Gaelyn. I don’t comment much here but I always look forward to each post. Ok, let’s go with photo number 706 this next week … just because. 🙂
Thanks Ann. Always nice to know your looking in. #706 for you this week.
