This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including wildlife, white, and South Africa.
Rita chose #8732. Even from a distance the morning light accented this lion’s mane on safari in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa.
Diane and Nigel chose #19, for her birthday on Sunday this week. Being they don’t probably need, or want, any pets right now, I’ll give Diane a virtual gift of a Ferret named Lemondrop. She was a “keeper’s pet”when I volunteered as an animal keeper at the California Living Museum while living in Bakersfield, California in1989. She was very friendly and would sit on my shoulder while I prepared food bowls for other animals on site.
Sue chose #2019. Although she’s heading to Italy this year, I’m trying to convince her to put South Africa on her travel list next. And even though she can visit the nearby Pacific Ocean she could see sunset over the Indian Ocean at Tsitsikamma National Park like this shot taken during my visit in 2013.
Gail chose #476. Not sure if this was originally a window or hole in the wall of Wukoki Pueblo in Wupatki National Monument, Arizona. This shot is from my first visit in April 2009. If you are near Flagstaff consider the short drive north to explore the many native ruins.
Pat chose #6418, “the first few numbers of my phone number.” The winter of 2015/16 I lived in my 5th-wheel in Kanab, Utah with a quiet view, and a great signal from the towers high above on the Vermilion Cliffs. I didn’t mind the cemetery out my back windows but could have done without the snow.
Sherry and David chose #1111. Oh no, more white stuff. This time burying the meadows along Highway 67 on the Kaibab National Forest when leaving the North Rim Grand Canyon on April 30, 2010.
Jeff chose #1849, “for the year the Manly-Jayhawker parties of 1849 found their first water at Indian Wells (Inyokern), after five days of travel from Death Valley.” You might notice the ground is moist in this photo because of rain the previous night. May be the first water this butterfly had seen in a while. (OK, so it’s a stretch.) This shot was taken 3-16-10 during a hike to Sterkspruit Falls at the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. I was traveling with friend Joan, also known as the Bug Lady.
Pam and John chose #8181. Won’t be long before the colors begin to change on the Aspen on the Kaibab National Forest. I want to see it again, but am not anxious to see summer over.
Ann chose #1247, “the time it is right this nano-second.” Well this shot of the Vermilion Cliffs along SR89 in Arizona was taken while driving, so also a nano-second. Back in 2009, my P&S Canon PowerShot worked OK for drive-by shooting.
Jodee and Bill chose #3460, one of six in a panorama. I was walking the Shale Trail in Karoo Botanical Garden and looking down into the town of Worcester, South Africa where I’d spent the night. Didn’t stay long as the day was warm in this desert like environment.
Yogi chose #9754. Spotted this Indian Myna sitting on a rock, I think, in Pilanesberg Game Reserve, South Africa in 2014.
For my choice, black and white seemed appropriate for this set of gauges seen on an almost abandoned large piece of equipment seen on a recent walk.

Ha, you have no idea how many memories the photo of the ferret brought back. When I worked at the Vet Research lab in my early 20’s we had a whole lot of ferrets there. One tiny little white one was abandoned by its mother at a couple of days old. I hand reared it, and was told as it was so tame they would let me have her as a pet. She lived at home, was house trained and followed me everywhere, her name was Scaramouche and we all loved her to bits. Thanks for this. 28 for next week please, our wedding anniversary on Tuesday.
Take care and best wishes from us both, Diane and Nigel
That is too cool! This ferret was our keeper pet because they are not native to California and couldn’t be displayed at the educational facility. She was a rescue. Happy Anniversary!!! And #28.
I love them all!
Thanks Jennifer. You should think about leaving a number and playing along.
I did like the white photo of winter this morning. While we have cooled just a bit, the smoke is still thick and choking here in Grants Pass. Just trying to get through it, and there really is nowhere to go even if we could get away. Currently the heat means we need to water, and body stuff means we are both doing PT. So I’ll just look at your photos and others, including my own which are getting a reworking of the catalog, and then I’ll choose 7427. I like the phone number idea when I run out of numbers.
I thought folks might like to see the snow as they are maybe still cooking from summer. Me, not ever overly fond of that white stuff. #7427 for you next week.
Only in travel do we see that diversity is what makes us all the same – that pic in South Africa could be one of many places we’ve visited in the US. Of course you throw in all those incredible critters you have photographed there and “never mind”. Lemondrop is so cute! We often comment that we “wonder what this would look like when it snows” and seeing the road from North Rim covered in white answers it for that pretty drive – I might like it even better than when we saw it in late summer 🙂
#2311 for next week please
Many times while traveling in South Africa I was reminded of landscapes traveled in the US. The scariest was seeing McDonalds and ToysRUs. Those meadows along the drive to the NR change so much over the seasons. #2311 for next week. So glad you can comment again.
I just can’t get over that you saw the magnificent lion in person. What a great shot. Lucky lucky you. Because I saw the picture before the story, I thought the ferret was a stuffed animal. With her pink eyes, I assume she’s an albino? Love seeing the snow on the trees and the big sky view over the highway. I actually might like to spend a day or two in it. I haven’t done that for 8 years now. I’ll take 8248 for next time please.
I never tired of seeing lions. Yes, the ferret was albino, and a real lover. I’d rather see the snow in photos than be surrounded by it and could easily go the rest of my life without it. #8248 for next week.
Hi Gaelyn I love the photo of Lemondrop the ferret, and the snow scene at the Vermillion Cliffs it looks a very welcoming change to this severe hot weather we are having at the moment. However, my favourite this week are those lovely colourful Aspen trees at the Kaibab National Park, No 9951 for next weeks foto Friday. Thanks Have a great weekend.
Thanks. I imagine many people in hot environments would cool off with a little snow about now. No thanks. I’m not even ready to say goodbye to summer even though I love the fall colors. #9951 for next week.
I like the fall colors in the Kaibab plateau, although like you, I hate to see summer leave. But it will be nice to get some rain again and clear out all the smoke from the forest fires. Next week I choose #1754, the current time (military) as I write this. Thanks for all the photos and info.
I just can’t figure out where summer went this year. #754 for next week. Thank you for stopping by.
Beautiful set of photos. For some reason I like the view of the cemetery from the trailer, the lion on the loose of course, and strangely enough the last photo with the old school dashboard.
Next week, lets try 0567! Are you not proud of me? I haven’t used random dot org in a while.
Thanks. It was a pretty view when I wintered in Kanab, except for that white stuff. 😉 I am proud of you remembering a number all by yourself so we’ll see what #0567 brings next week.
I’m also sucker for beach photos, I’ll like Sue’s pick for this week.
For next week I’d like 2012 The year pediatric cancer awareness became mainstream:
“I believe my [twin] brother would be proud of me and, though he may not be by my side, he will be in my heart forever. I believe in Gold in September” ~Annie Bartosz (age 11)
In 2014 President Obama, declared September to be Childhood Cancer Awareness month, and lit the White House Gold.
I hope the current POTUS would do such a thing. #2012 for you.
I do love the aspen in the fall especially the orange. The yellow color is so brilliant. Hopefully, we will be somewhere to see these beauties in the fall. Lemondrop is so adorable:)
#5208
I’m hoping to get to fall aspen colors this year. #5208 for you.
Back and catching up — enjoyed all these photos (except too much snow!, which I know you love as much as I do (not)….I DO like Autumn and guess that’s my favorite picture here. (I like it most knowing we can still escape the season that comes next! Oh for next week #1238, the time it is (copying a previous commentor0
Send that white stuff to somebody who likes it. I like Autumn, but would prefer endless summer. #1238 for you.
