This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including several panoramas and a 1992 look at Spirit Lake.
Diane and Nigel chose #1008, one of two in a panorama and view they might remember. Taken the end of May 2009 looking east from Point Imperial on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park. In the foreground Saddle Mountain, then light and shadow plays on the valley below cut by the Colorado River to create Marble Canyon, and in the distance Vermilion Cliffs to the left and Echo Cliffs to the right.
Pam and John chose #8009, one in three of a panorama. A southeastern view from my free BLM camp off Darby Well Road just south of Ajo Arizona. This was just before sunset in February 2017 and it just kept getting better.
Debi chose #8866. Saw a lot of Gemsboks (g=h) when driving in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa bordering Namibia. This typical desert environment had received quite a bit of rain before my visit in March 2014 and many roads where inaccessible so I’d like to return with a 4×4.
Sherry and David chose #111. Summer of 2005 I was a Park Ranger at Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado where I learned about the Ancestral Puebloan people formally called the Anasazi. I led tours through several ruins and spent time in the museum where this rope made of yucca fibers was on display.
Rita chose #7331, one of two in a panorama. Monsoon hangs on into September bringing amazing cloud formations over Grand Canyon. And even if it rains, this view is from the North Rim’s Grand Lodge.
Sallie and Bill chose #819, “for my birthday…” Happy Birthday Sallie!!! This is one in five of a panorama. The Vermilion Cliffs in northern Arizona would be a HOT spot to celebrate your birthday and this year probably smoky also. I hope you have a smoke free day in Oregon.
Jodee and Bill chose #3011. August is a fine time for Arizona’s monsoon and 2016 put on several shows. This view might look somewhat similar to Rita’s choice as it too was taken from the North Rim lodge.
Gail chose #7451, “my best friend’s date of birth.” Happy belated birthday from Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in far southern Arizona. When visiting during February 2017 I drove the Ajo Mountain Road several times and never tired of the views.
Yogi gets #53 for the number of words in his comment. My first winter in Yarnell 2005/06, seems I was always on the go with Darlene and Berta. On this day we visited Tuzigoot and Montezumas Castle (the image) national monuments. These retired ladies sure kept me busy and I miss them both.
Jeff chose #4851 in celebration of this year’s ancient Methuselah Bristlecone’s 4,851st birthday. We should sip some wine and make a toast, at one of the vineyards and associated wineries in Stellenbosch South Africa where this shot was taken in 2013. I hope he’ll drive because when I was there solo I knew better than to drink and drive.
Pat gets #43 for the number of words in her comment. I began my Ranger career in 1992 at Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument in Washington and this is Spirit Lake with a log jam at the end of the Harmony Trail. Wind blew the dead wood to different parts of the lake.
My choice from many options of sunset over the Date Creek Mountains taken from about half-way down the Yarnell Hill, or SR89.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.

Hi Gaelyn, Your photo’s are always fabulous but this week I find them quite dramatic. I especially love sunsets and of course you know my favourites are of the Grand Canyon. Its difficult sometimes to chose a favourite, but this weeks fav for me is Sunset over the Date Creek Mountains. No 8732 for next week please. Thanks. Enjoy your weekend.
Thanks Rita. I do love a good dramatic sky. I knew you’d like all the canyon shots this week. Always hard to beat a good sunset. #8732 for you next week.
Oh wow, what a great collection, I agree with Rita they are quite dramatic. I just the love all the Grand Canyon shots equally, no particular favourites. Naturally, I love the Gemsbok as well though.
Having looked again, sunset over the Date Creek Mountains has the edge being the most spectacular. 19 for my birthday on Sunday this week please. Take care Diane and Nigel
Thanks, I too thought this was a particularly good week of photos. Happy Birthday dear friend! #19 for you.
Yes, this week my favorite is the panorama from Darby Well Road. We have never made it down there, just passed by last year between Ajo and Tucson. We plan to camp there next winter when we head south, so I will pick 2019 for next week. I will also keep track of your Darby Well posts so I can hopefully figure out where to go when we get there in late January.
I hope to meet you at Darby in late January. If I’m not working, and I’ve applied at Organ Pipe, I’m usually near that area in January. So, #2019 for you, and hopefully when we finally meet.
Thanks Gaelyn. N has booked lunch out somewhere but it is to be a surprise. I suspect a surprise for him as well as we obviously have not been there before 🙂 At least I do not have to cook :-)))) xx
I liked the view of Montezumas Castle as my favorite this week. Next week I choose 476 for no reason except that it just popped into my mind. Thanks for sharing your photos and memories
Thank you for stopping by and commenting. You get #476 next week.
I guess I’m the Pat of 43 words! Must not have left a number, so here’s one now: 6418, the first few numbers of my phone number.
I like my dead wood photo….
That would be you. So next week you get #6418.
That is an amazing rope in our picture. How old is it supposed to be or is it a reproduction? I’d love to see those made. Really like the Gemsboks. What antlers. Or are they horns? The Vermillion Cliffs Pictures and the monsoon view from the North Rim Lodge are fantastic. What a great picture of the cliff dwelling. Must be wonderful memories for you of going there with your friends. Life is hard when our friends and loved ones start leaving us. WOW to how much dead wood was in the lake. Amazing. Where did it ultimately go? That is one fabulous sunset! In keeping with the theme, I’ll take 1111 for next week and then I guess I’ll have to come up with something else.
The rope would be authentic and possibly 700 years old. The arid environment allows for wonderful preservation. Gemsbok have horns. The wood in Spirit Lake eventually rotted and sunk. I love your inquisitive mind. Thank you for being a friend. You get #1111 for next week.
Good Grief, I cannot pick a favorite sunset, all spectacular and colorful. For nest week I’d like 1849 for the year the Manly-Jayhawker parties of 1849 found their first water at Indian Wells (Inyokern), after five days of travel from Death Valley.
Thanks Jeff. It’s hard to beat a good sunset. Unless it’s the stars. #1849 for you.
So many awesome photos. I love our choice with all the saguaro. Pretty panorama:) I always love to see the colored cliffs and sunsets.
Next week #8181
Thanks Pam. Bet it feels good to be back in the desert with big sky sunsets. #8181 for you.
Oh my word, the clouds! I forget about clouds, must remember to write a note and post it on my forehead. Your photos are beautiful … simple and complicated. I appreciate your sharing them so very much. Thank you! Let me jump back in here and choose #1247 since that’s what time it is right this nano-second.
Thank you Ann. Put the post it on the windshield of that great new setup you have. I’m putting you down for #1247.
As I was reading your captions this time I thought of what a smart way this is to not only share a variety of views with your readers, but also to have a random opportunity to look back at your experiences! I think our choice this week is the best of the lot – so gorgeous.
#3460 for next week please
Yup, that’s one of the reasons I do this FFF post. Plus I give you all juice in return. #3460 for you.
I know that I am late, sorry.
I always love anything Anasazai and so I love the braided rope in the museum and I love the cliff dwellings.
My number in case I am not too late is 9754.
Isn’t it amazing the things that can be made from plants, like the rope? Vacations are the perfect excuse for being late. 😉 And you made it anyway because I’m just putting the post together today. So, #9754 for you.
THe sunset is gorgeous … we’ve been to the Vermillion Cliffs area and so my gift here brought back wonderful memories, thank you! We were traveling on the Coast last week and thus we DID get away from the smoke….should have stayed there as it is pretty bad again here in Eugene.
Glad you got away from the smoke if only for a little while.
