This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by eight readers including a tossup of Grand Canyon and South Africa plus an old boyfriend’s older car.
Diane and Nigel chose #308. Those are not holiday ornaments on the Aspen trees although they do look a bit like paper lanterns. Each of those contains possibly a hundred Western Tent Caterpillars that will eventually turn into a moth.
Rita chose #1099. This stormy view of Grand Canyon was taken from the North Rim the end of April, 2010 before the park was open to the public. Yes, that’s snow on Oza Butte to the far right.
Gail chose #1984, “in memory of a year when I came to a fork in the road, and took it.” And that’s not always an easy decision. I took a fork in the road in 2010 when I went to South Africa for the first time. While there I backpacked into the Drakensburg Mountains and awoke to this view.
Pam and John chose #3008. While traveling in South Africa during my second visit in 2013 I frequently went out of my way to drive mountain passes, which can also mean valleys, like this shot of Meiringspoort that took me to an unexpected waterfall.
Jeff chose #8600 “the elevation of Grandview Campground where I hope to see the Persied Meteor Shower.” I hope that California campground isn’t too smoky from fires around Inyo National Forest. Sadly, Lee’s Ferry campground, near where this shot of an old building was taken in 2014, could also be smoky from the Obi Fire still burning on the North Rim.
Sallie and Bill chose #1963. A stormy morning over Grand Canyon during August, 2010.
Yogi chose #7658. While on safari at Addo Elephant National Park many animals are seen. Hyenas tend to get a bad rap, but other than stinking something terrible, they do a good job helping clean up carrion, and I think they’re kind of cute in their own way.
Sherry and David chose #11. My 1970s boyfriend bought this Chey Nomad and fixed it up complete with a steely matt gray paint job (or do they call that primer) and “Ye Pusher” in gold Old-English letters on the back fender. I was the pusher, not drugs but the car, when it wouldn’t start so he could pop the clutch.
My choice this week is a “good morning” from Sierra. She wakes me with a stare and gentle tap on the face with a paw every morning between 5-6. Sometimes, I go back to sleep, or pretend to like this morning with the phone handy.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.

Not a photo here not to make a favourite. The Western Tent Caterpillars are interesting I followed your link to read all about them. Apart from your boy friend’s car, every other photo holds very fond memories for me. Have a fabulous weekend and tell Sierra she has too early an alarm clock 🙂 All the very best from us both, Nigel and Diane
Oops nearly forgot 1008 for next week please.
Thanks, I love when the photos evoke memories for others. I guess when you sleep all day, like Sierra, you are up early. #1008 for you.
That photo of your morning view in the Drakensburg Mountains is gorgeous! Wow! I love the coloring of the hyenna’s fur. I agree, he is kind of cute:) Next week #8009
Thanks. The Drakensburg Mountains are superb. You’d love hiking there, not many trees to block the view. #8009 for next week.
Out in the back country in the Northwest on lonely roads you will occasionally see a Pine/Fir/Juniper with Xmas ornaments on it. After a while it will be full of ornaments as locals add more to the tree.
The 55′ Chevy is probably a ‘150’ model. It is not a 55′ Nomad. I owned one in the 60’s.
Cheers to all.
Same type of tree decorating occurs in the desert SW.
These are really fun. Our kids were in Tanzania two weeks ago. Just amazing. They were is Paris after that!
I hope you are well, after your trials and tribulations. cheerio
Thanks. Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia…. all still on my list. Paris, not so much. But I’ll bet that enjoyed every moment.
I am doing better every day.
Love the old car story. So you are pusher huh. Too funny. Of course the Grand Canyon pictures is wonderful and so is the gorgeous view you awoke to in South Africa. That must have been just breathtaking. Life seems perfect in those moments. Great picture of Sierra. Lucky kitty. Keeping with my current theme, I’ll take 111 for next week.
Thanks Sherry. We used to get stopped all the time by people looking for drugs. #111 for next week.
WOW ! I love old cars especially veteran cars. Your morning photographs are gorgeous too. But of course my favourite for this week is stormy morning over Grand Canyon, that must be a spectacular site being there. No 7331 for next week please. Enjoy your weekend.
Thanks Rita. Seems this week was full of goodies. All the photos in the world can’t do justice to standing at the rim of Grand Canyon. #7331 for you.
Sierra has such a wise look about her! I love our mountain view shot — what a beautiful place to greet the morning — stormy or not. All such beautiful pictures. Even the hyena (though guess I’m glad we don’t have smell-o-vision). 819 for my birthday, leaving off the year because it makes me too old and the number too long.
Thanks. Sierra is a smart one. Happy Birthday dear lady!!! #819 for you.
OMG! I can comment again :-)) So random!
I’ve been enjoying all the Friday Fotos for months and these are just as wonderful. That view at Drakensburg Mountain is powerful.
#3011 for next week please. So fun to get to play again!
Welcome back. The Drakensburgs were amazing to hike. #3011 for next week.
Just curious, if you had to use the “tab trick” to comment.
I liked the Drakensburg Mountain view – so beautiful. I had no idea South Africa had such beautiful scenery !
I choose 7451, my best friend’s date of birth for this coming Friday
South Africa is a diverse country full of beauty. #7451 for you.
Of course I love the Sierra photo. I have woken over the years to lots of paws to the face by several cats. I love the others.
I attended a car auction last Spring where a Chevy Nomad Station Wagon it good but not great shape sold for over $30,000. I was amazed.
It’s amazing how a cat can be both so gentle and so painful with those little paws, and claws. This Nomad was not in the best of shape but I imagine it would fetch a pretty price now days.
Alan, Typical prices for nice restored Nomads are in the $50-$65K range. A restomod* Nomad can bring over $100, 000.
*Restomod_ A vehicle completely rebuilt with a modern drivetrain and suspension and usually includes special body and interior work.

I find myself with the majority this time the Drakensburg Mountains are so surreal. I never tire of the clouds over the canyon, but the mountain is hauntingly unique. This year the ancient Methuselah Bristlecone will be celebrating its 4851 birthday. That’s my number for next week.
The Drakensburg Mountains captured my heart, as did much of South Africa. I have yet to see that ancient pine. #4851 for you.
Good ones again, so no favorites, but I’d almost forgotten about tent caterpillars….horrid creatures. I remember my grandmother’s crab apple tree getting them every summer. My grandfather would burn the nests….and the caterpillars would squirm out, finishing their death throes on the ground…..ewwww….
Ewwwwww……
