Last week I wrote about getting out of the rut I’ve recently found myself in and the best thing for that is plotting a road trip. Just thinking about traveling got me excited, and that’s what I need. Plus I really have to get away from all the uninvited critters in and around the Yarnell house, perhaps a good time to have it critter proofed. And it’s about time Sierra learned to be a road warrioress.
She is already pretty street-wise, or should I say wildlife wise. Last week I saw Sierra watching/stalking something and when I went out to scare whatever it was away—no new roommates needed—discovered a 5” female tarantula. I covered and trapped it with a container then called the local Spider Pharm and they came and caught it. She will either be used for breeding or milking to produce an anti-venom. I would have let her go under the shed where she was headed but Sierra goes under the shed too.
The next morning again Sierra alerts me to a critter. This time a young gopher snake working its way out from between the walls at the front door jam. I keep Sierra back with a broom, take a couple quick pics, and then the snake slips back into the wall. Hmmm, how to fill this crack which comes into the house. I know it’s a good snake, but I don’t want it as a roommate. Tinfoil! Filled the crack. Know idea where the snake will go. This house needs a major spray and seal which would require moving a whole lot of stuff both inside and out. I haven’t said anything to Berta’s daughter about any of this because she has enough on her plate right now.
Seems one of the big reasons not to travel right now has been the cost of fuel. I could probably still live rent free and always have to eat. Going to need two tires soon and that’s a big expense. But seriously, if I’m not going to work this summer—last two possible jobs fell through—I really don’t want to just sit here either. I can stay at moderate elevation to escape heat, boondock for undetermined amount of time in any one place, and don’t go very far to the next place.
I believe monsoon has arrived to the Southwest. During summer we get really excited about rain on this parched landscape. Plan activities before 11am for the best chance to stay dry, plus of course the temperatures are cooler. Sometimes it’s just a show of dark clouds, thunder and lightning. Precipitation ranges from count the drops on one hand, to deluge causing flash floods. My favorite is the gentle female rain that soaks the ground slowly. And then sometimes, a colorful gift follows.
I need inspiration. New views to photograph, write about, and share. Or even old views revisited. I love to watch the storms move across Grand Canyon.
And if clouds don’t block the view, moon rise at Bryce would be nice. I haven’t been there since filming the documentary over two years ago. Which, BTW, I can soon share the link with you.
Traveling means moving back into the truck-camper. And after finding a 3” scorpion in the bathroom sink Saturday morning I was motivated to move.
Within a couple of hours Sierra and I were settled into the camper with most of our basic needs: cat pan, food and water bowls, coffee, food, and computer. And then the refreshing light rain came and cooled the air.
Pull out Tuesday destination Flagstaff.

So glad to hear that you are moving on again, though as you say, fuel costs when you are not earning are a problem. It will be good for you to get away from Yarnell for a while and good for us to see some new areas as well. Take care and travel safely. Diane and Nigel
At this point I don’t plan to go far but am happy to be going anywhere.
All the best! I don’t know how you do it. We’re worried about ticks here, but those scorpions…
You’ll be happier on the road, won’t you? The best of luck.
Thanks. I don’t know how you do it. Ticks are as bad as scorpions in my book and I’ve now lived with both.
I’m going to road trip with my friend next month
I hope Its going to be awesome.
By the way Amazing Guide
Keep up the awesome Work.
Thanks Ameer. Hope you have a wonderful trip.
Hey G,
Sounds like a high country roadtrip is definitely in order. Get the critters out of the house including you two! Flag is always a good summer bet and the canyon fix.
John is heading for the Hoh rainforest for a week with the camper. Buddy and I are doing our retreat at home. Lots of stuff planned!
Been in the 80’s here hot for us! Due to cool into the 70’s later in the week. Did our local garden tour yesterday and thought of you a couple were on the edges of streams with steep reliev and lots of wild area you would have a
Had a ball with your camera and great eye!!
Beautiful cool morning sitting on the patio having breakfast. Life is good!
I am so looking forward to this. But John’s trip sounds divine as well. As long as the temps aren’t too high.
Glad to read that you are on the move.
We know what you mean about sitting too long but also the costs of moving.
Be Safe and Enjoy your trip!
It’s about time.
I am so more than ready.
It’ll be good to be on the road,as I sit at home thinking out a trip of our own. Safe travels regardless of where the adventure leads. Looking forward to your posts and photos.
Thanks Jeff. I am more than ready to take a journey.
Safe travels my friend. The Kaibab Forest is calling you.
Thanks. I can hear it.
Hooray! Safe travels and have fun….. happy for you. Hot here — kind of wish we were on the road along with you;
I am looking forward to higher elevation. Feel free to join me.
Sounds good Gaelyn !! Pleased to hear you made this decision and I will look forward to your wonderful new photo’s Take care and enjoy your venture.
I am so ready for some new views. Thanks.
Excellent! I think you’re more than ready to move on and refresh your brain. Bryce is a good option, it’s so beautiful, but I know you’ll find beauty wherever you go.
Just have to look for the beauty, it’s almost always there.
Really glad to hear you are getting back on the road. I’m sure that will definitely perk you up. A Scorpion in the sink. A tarantula in the yard. Those pictures give me the willies. I don’t think Yarnell is the place for me. If Bertha is not going to ever come back to her house, what will happen to Sierra? And to the house? You can’t mind the store indefinitely.
I’m happy with Yarnell being a winter place without all the critters and moderate weather. Berta won’t be back. Her daughter will decide eventually what to do with the house/properties/stuff. Mostly a courtesy allowing me to live here rent free and kind of a caretaker. Sierra goes with me. And I’ll be back. My 5th-wheel is parked here. I’ve put off traveling mostly because of finances and job uncertainty. Maybe I’ll put a donation button on the sidebar for fuel.
Really glad to see you “moving” again. Even a short move and being back in your own space should be rejuvenating and help you weather the hard stuff you have been dealing with a bit more easily. Send me a PM on facebook with your mailing address if you have one, Gaelyn.
Actually, just being in the camper makes a difference. Now I feel the mix of excitement and anxiety to travel. That will go away once I roll. I’ll be away from mail for at least a couple weeks but will PM.
Sierra definitely looks settled in! Nostalgic photos for me, and I do understand your need for inspiration. I am currently in a bit of a photo/cyber rut.
Sierra is most settled in when the truck isn’t rolling. Thank goodness I got out for some marvelous inspiration. Hope you get out of your rut soon.
Safe travel Gaelyn! The views at Grand Canyon are great but the snake is scary, I don’t know how to deal with it. I plan for a road trip with my friends next month and we’ve got loads of things to prepare. Anyway, keep up your great work.
Thanks Luna. Not a bad snake, just not the best roommate. Safe travels for you too.
