This week’s Foto Friday Fun includes images chosen by 10 readers and definitely features a water theme, plus my latest critter visitors.
Jim and Diana chose #6884. The Waterfall trail included a lot of boulder climbing but was definitely worth it while camping at Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa in 2014.
Steve chose #164, one of five in a panorama. Sure glad I had been to Crater Lake National Park before this smoky 2007 visit when I worked at Oregon Caves. Thank you Steve for solving the commenting problem.
Rita chose #5984. Birding and sunsets are the best things about camping along the Salton Sea.
Yogi chose #5902. Can’t go wrong with sunsets and water, this time the Indian Ocean in Tsitsikamma National Park a few days before the Waterfall hike.
Sue chose #4594, “an important life change anniversary for me.” This was only a room change day for me. I would no longer be using this lovely communal kitchen at Alvera’s Guest House in Stellenbosch, South Africa because my new room had its own kitchen, though not quite so big.
Jeff chose #242, “in honor of our nation’s 242nd birthday.” And this shot looking back at the North Rim on Cinco de Mayo 2008 was in honor of my first rim to rim hike across Grand Canyon.
Sherry and David chose #628, “for the day I got this darn poison ivy.” I sure hope that’s over for her and glad not to see it in the desert Southwest. Imagine living in this stone structure above Box Canyon almost 1000 years ago. You can visit many sites in Wupatki National Monument not far north of Flagstaff.
Pam and John chose#7007. Looks like a jumble of rocks and dry desert, because it is. Sadly, there wasn’t more than a puddle of water in Barker Dam when I hiked in Joshua Tree National Park during March 2015.
Sallie and Bill chose #712, “oldest child’s birthday.” Hmmm, this shot of the Painted Desert along SR89 from 2009, was taken with my oldest (or first) digital camera, an HP Photosmart.
Diane and Nigel chose #1007. My mother’s antique cherry wood secretary’s desk. This shot was taken in her Texas home in 2011. Under the flip-down desktop are lots of pigeon holes and slots. Intrigued since childhood with this desk, I coveted it. Sadly, it was lost in the Yarnell Fire.
My choices are the two most recent visitors to the Yarnell house. The 5” female tarantula attracted Sierra’s attention in the driveway. Not wanting an entanglement with her, I put a container over the spider and called the local Spider Pharm to come and get it. If it wasn’t for the cat, I’d have just let it go. The next day Sierra again alerted me to this young gopher snake crawling out from between the house walls. These are good snakes yet I really don’t want it as a roommate.

Laughing a bit here, because that kitchen photo was the only indoor photo, and that anniversary in my life was about shifting homes and who I shared it with. My favorite actually is the Salton Sea photo, go figure. It can be pretty ugly there unless you capture the right moment, either in your mind or in the camera.
No such thing as coincidence. 😉 Guess I’m more of an outdoor gal when it comes to photography. Other than recent shots of Sierra. Salton Sea can be such a mixed bag. No number this week?
I am really sorry that you lost that desk in the fire as it is gorgeous. Nigel’s Dad also has a very old desk but I am not sure what wood it is. Much darker than cherry. Some great shots here but my favourite is of the snake. 1307 for next week please. Hope you are sleeping back on wheels again much safer 🙂 the spider and the scorpion would have sent me elsewhere for sure. Take care Diane and Nigel
Out of everything lost in the fire that’s the one I miss the most. Just no space for it in the 5th-wheel. Yes, I am sleeping in the camper and soon to get it on the road again. #1307 for next week.
These are all such good pictures Gaelyn. They seem larger than ususal. Love that waterfall. I’ve been hiking to almost one a day here in the Smokies. Love the fantastic picture of The Canyon and the one of Wupatki. I can’t get over the color in the photo of the painted desert with your first digital camera. It did a great job. Better than mine does with color today. Everything is always washed out. So sad that the fire took that beautiful desk. I can see why you coveted it for its beauty and the memory of your mother. Yikes, are you brave to deal with the tarantula. I’d like to have #9079, the high where Winnona is parked and the high in nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Unusually hot in both cases. Guess where I’ll be? Yes, Steve, many many thanks!
Thanks Sherry. Been a long time since I’ve seen a waterfall, or any running water other than rivulets. That’s what happens in the desert. My one visit to the Smokies was lush and green. I don’t mind those temps so much but not with the humidity I’m sure you have as well. 88% here today. #9079 for next week.
Too many diverse choices this week your desk, a fuzzy spider, water and sunsets … No favorite they’re all good. I notice that 1953 and 1954 have recently been used but not #65. I’ll take 65 as the 65th Over The Line World Championship games begin on Fiesta Island.
Thanks Jeff. #65 for next week.
You have had so many experiences! I love your pics of the desert southwest. My father showed us kids several, hidden in plain sight, native american homes in southwest Utah when I was a kid. And I love your pics of other travels. Sorry about the cherrywood desk that you lost in the fire. It reminds me of my wife’s similar desk that she got from her grandmother.
I really look forward to your posts every week. Take care and have a great weekend.
Thank you. Life is about experiences. Glad to take you to some SW memories.
Love that waterfall and the tarantula isn’t bad either. I’d rather see the former up close and the latter from a distance. If I manage to post this, I’ll choose 1234 as my number.
Yea, it worked! Definitely prefer waterfalls. #1234 for you next week. Thanks for playing along.
As always, superb photo’s Gaelyn. My favourite this week is that beautiful sunset at the Tsitsika National Park. No 1774 for next week thanks Have a pleasant week ahead and good luck with job finding.
Thanks Rita. #1774 for you.
Thanks for ‘our’ roadtrip picture with your first digital camera — I remember my first one too — kind of a life-changer wasn’t it! Glad to see the creepy crawler pictures b/c they are so interesting, but also glad you’ll be getting away from them hopefully as you travel. i’m ok with them, but not as room-mates please. Hope you’re able to blog from the road, and if you are I will take #6. No reason at all. And again have a fabulous roadtrip.
Thank goodness for digital! I am happy to roll away from these scary critters. I should be able to blog on the road. #6 for you.
