This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 13 readers including several from Grand Canyon and the most recent full moon.
Rita chose #798. The Southwest is known for unusual rock formations caused by erosion of soft and hard layers sometimes leaving behind ‘toadstools’ like this one seen along SR89A near Cliff Dwellers Lodge and awesomely good restaurant.
Jim and Diana chose #283. They like history so may have heard about Jim Owens, the first game warden on the North Rim before being designated a National Monument. This is a shallow cave above where his cabin was located and presumably where he kept food chilled. He befriended the iconic Brighty the burro to haul water from a nearby spring and hunted predators back in the day when that was more acceptable. Of course there is the current change in protecting wolves and bears.
Donna chose #1007. This is what you’ll see at Jacob Lake before the North Rim opens followed by a locked gate. In 2009 I experienced a little truck trouble on the way to work at the North Rim.
Debi chose #2014. She’s a morning beach walker and sees way more sunrises than I do, except when I’m on vacation and especially in South Africa. Bonus during my 2013 visit to Tsitsikamma National Park when I watched the waves from the porch of my chalet.
Yogi chose #6363 because he turned 63 last month. I turned 61 the month this shot was taken of a White-crowned sparrow on a boulder in Joshua Tree National Park.
Sue chose #7320, the amount she’s saving for a trip to Italy. It would be cheaper to visit South Africa and go soak in the thermal Roman bath at Warmwaterberg Spa after a hike where I saw this succulent that looked like a Jade plant on steroids.
Diane and Nigel chose #2704 one of 15 in a long panorama. Enjoyed this long valley view from Swartberg Pass along with many other passes I drove in South Africa.
Gayle chose #1548. This is a two photo panorama of the beginning of the Widforss Trail on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park. Named after painter Gunnar Widforss, the trail winds through forest and offers a few views into the canyon.
Sherry and David chose #9999, “for absolutely no reason at all.” Guess my reason for hiking the Estes Canyon Trail was to see more of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. I believe they would hike it too.
Rosemary chose #5353, “as it’s hubby’s birthday.” International hoop dancer Derrick Suwaima Davis entertains at Heritage Days on the North Rim Grand Canyon and here his son performs the Eagle dance.
Sallie and Bill chose #3893, “the last four digits of a phone number I actually just had to punch in.” This is one of at least four Wild Dogs I saw in Kruger National Park, South Africa.
Jeff chose #271, “the distance from home to see the first west coast inter-planetary launch.” Nowhere near that distance from “Uncle Jimmy’s” cabin that was in this meadow to his food cave above those boulders to the left. The same cave as the second photo above.
Pam and John chose #2704. Low clouds both highlight and hide features in Grand Canyon from the Walhalla overlook on the North Rim.
My choices for this week are attempts at the full moon, or almost full anyway. I bought the Photo Pills app and it works really cool for lining up sun and moon, rise and set, plus milky way over the real-time horizon.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.

Wow, that last shot of the moon is just amazing. Love our photo and thanks for the reminder about Brighty. We love the shot of the wild dog, you were so lucky to see them. They are becoming more and more endangered from traps and domestic dog diseases. The Rangers are doing a fabulous job of looking after them but they can only do so much. 405 for next week please. Take care my friend, hugs from us both. Diane and Nigel
Thanks, I was struggling a little with this moon and then forgot my tripod. Took a couple trips to Kruger before I saw the beautiful and fierce Wild dogs. #405 for you next week.
I Love the variety of these superb photo’s Gaelyn my favourite one being low cloud over Grand Canyon . Photo Friday number for next week is 3789 please. Enjoy your weekend.
Thanks, variety is what Friday Fotos is all about. #3789 for you.
Really like that last moon photo. Following on our trail of history, let’s do the number 1826 for the year that on July 4, both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams passed…50 years to the day of when they signed the Declaration of Independence.
Thanks. Let’s see where history leads us with #1826.
I was thinking the panorama of the pass in South Africa until I got to the end and saw that last full moon shot. Love that! Yes, yes, I will start saving for South Africa, Gaelyn. LOL But that trip to Italy is for both of us, and includes many things we might not see in South Africa. OK I’ll choose 1961 the year I fell in love with Michelangelo and decided I wanted to see Florence.
Save for Italy first. I’m sure to convince you South Africa is next. #1961 for you.
I especially liked the toadstool rock this week.
Next week: #1017
Those toadstool rocks are cool. #1017 for you.
Wonderful moon shots – something I may never master! Someday I’d love to see Derek dance. The few I’ve seen have been very moving. Wonderful clouds over the canyon.
1090 for next week please.
Thanks Jodee, the moon is difficult to photograph and I’m sorry I forgot the tripod for these. #1090 for next week.
So lovely, especially the moon shots.
Thanks.
Testing_ LUV the last photo of the Moon rising between the rocks.
Thank you.
My #1 is the final picture. What a shot of the full moon. Gorgeous Gaelyn. But I also would for sure take the hike from my picture and love the little Hoop Dancer. The Walhalla overlook picture is fantastic. I’ve never seen a picture of a wild dog that was that close and that clear. Really shows how different they are from our coyotes and dogs. I’ll take #35 which is the number of letters in my current feeling “it is way too windy way too constantly here”.
Thanks. Sorry about the wind, had quite a bit here lately also. So #35 for you and hopefully not mph.
Love the moon shots, especially the last one, and always always the canyon. Had never thought about wild dogs in SA…so that was interesting.
Thanks. The wild dogs look calico to me.
Love, love our photo for this week!! That is one very strange looking wild dog! Your moon shot is beautiful:)
#8900
Thanks. Monsoon at the canyon is best. #8900 for next week.
Great phots, all of them. I really, really like the last one. I’m intrigued with the photo pills app even though it is kind of pricey, it looks like a good product and it looks like they give you the whole thing instead of nickeling and dimeing for extra features.
I’m intrigued by the old game warden cave. I think it was 5th grade when the teacher read Brighty of the Grand Canyon to us.
Thanks Yogi. Photo Pills is the only app I’ve ever bought and I’m happy with it. Brighty of the Grand Canyon is a story for young and old alike.
I loved 798 this week. The wonders of nature.
Sorry to hear of your job difficulties. The Canyon isnt the same without you. I think for nxt week we will go with #144 this years Kentucky Derby.
Take care and my best ti Berta
Rosemary
Thanks. Erosion and rock make great art. #144 for you.
I’m a sucker for great beach shots!
Next week I’d like 205 the number of days InSight will take to travel to Mars
#205 for you.
#205 for you.
