This week’s Foto Friday Fun features images chosen by 11 readers including several from a 2009 road trip, a fine balance between some of my favorite places in Utah, Arizona, and South Africa, plus a couple of cloud filled canyons.
Rita chose #531. The second season I worked at the the North Rim Grand Canyon I had two RVs to move. My first trip north from Yarnell with a camper on my truck (different ones than now) I stopped at several parks along the way including Wupatki National Monument where this shot of Wupatki ruin was taken 4-16-09.
Sherry and David chose #463. From the same Wupatki visit as above this is the nearby Wukoki Pueblo.
Sue chose #978. More lions from my first visit to Kruger National Park. I will tease her into visiting South Africa yet.
Jeff chose #1824, “the Mexican Peso exchange rate I got yesterday.” As if the wildlife isn’t enough enticement to visit South Africa, many dramatic landscapes like the Drakensburg Mountains call to be hiked. The current rate of exchange at $1USD to 11.97Rand isn’t quite as good as Mexico but is affordable once you get there.
Pam and John chose #7630. Zion National Park in Utah is beautiful all times of year. However, I love the quiet winter visits best to avoid an otherwise overcrowded park. Bonus when Bighorn Sheep hang out on the open road with very little traffic.
Diane and Nigel chose #1304. Zoomed way in with my old Canon PowerShot yet even post-processing can’t make a shitty picture good. After the 2009 road trip mentioned above, I settled in for the second season at the North Rim Grand Canyon and hiked rim to rim for the second time with staff. This shot from North Kaibab trail looking WAY down and across the canyon to Plateau Point and Bright Angel trails yet to hike to get out of this big ditch.
Donna chose #987. This is the camper and truck I moved to Utah in spring of 2009 parked at Crazy Horse RV Park in Kanab. Little did I know I’d live in this place in the 5th-wheel during winter 2015/2016.
Patti and Abi chose #700, one pic of four in a panorama. More 2009 explorations and my first visit to Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch slot canyons. Slot canyons change over time when water moves boulders, when you don’t want to be there. This obstacle was about 5 feet of scramble. Was fun to do in a skirt.
cropped for better look, pronounced who-poo
Yogi chose #3584. He liked last weeks wildlife so hope these African Hoopoes are OK. These two were hanging out near camp in Boesmans Caravan Park in Bushmans River Mouth, though I saw them in other South African locations as well.
Jodee and Bill chose #7490. During my third visit to Addo Elephant National Park in 2014, I discovered an underground bird-hide near camp and was treated to a different perspective of Zebras plus the bonus of the youngster suckling. [My favorite this week.]
Sallie and Bill chose #1404, “part of a random restaurant address I wrote down to enter it in our car’s GPS.” GPS isn’t usually reliable on the North Rim Grand Canyon National Park but also isn’t needed to find this tree framed view of the canyon complete with a bench along the Bright Angel Point trail. Of course fog sometimes obscures the view.
I’m still bird watching in Yarnell and always amused when a Gamble Quail is seen not looking all that stable on tree branches. The shape of the branch seemed to imitate the shape of the bird.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Good morning Gaelyn, I just love reading all about your adventures and you would not have to tease me into Africa I would gladly come, well maybe when I was much younger and not so far away from you. All this weeks photo’s are absolutely wonderful and I was so pleased I chose a Grand Canyon shot this time. I have no favourite this week because as I said, I love them all. No 638 for next weeks Foto Friday. Have a great week end.
Thanks so much Rita. Sometimes looking back makes life’s adventures more real. South Africa is an easy country to travel in. #638 for you next week.
Love the nursing baby zebra pic and those clouds in the canyons. What a great variety of pics.
Thanks Susie. Did you do anything different that you got to log in. Other people have problems too.
Wow! It finally let me post a comment after trying for several years!!!! Persistence paid off!
Yes, you are teasing me with lions. Sometime I will need to pick your brain about the logistics, costs and how you “did” South Africa. Or at least how you did it sometimes, or one of the times or something or other. Erin gave me information about some safaris, and I won’t be doing that any time soon with my retirement income. LOL
South Africa is easily doable on your own without the over priced safari packages. It’s the flight that’s killer long and around $1000/RT. Can stay with auto visa up to 3 months. I’d gladly help you make a plan, and go along to guide.
Wow, Just Wow. Going to have to think about this one Gaelyn, except we are making plans for 2019 right now so it would have to be 2020. It is costing me that much to fly to Italy!
Hope you’re collecting air miles.
How about #65 as I will be finally on Medicare soon. 😀
Looking forward to your North Rim posts from Grand Canyon this summer. Always a delight to read.
Thanks!
Thanks for stopping by Gumo. One more year for me to #65.
I do believe this is my favorite week of photos so far. What amazing scenery and wildlife in every shot:) Our photo this week couldn’t be more perfect. We were just back to drive up Kolab Terrace a couple weeks ago and just saw seven sheep on our hike the other day. We’ve never seen any sheep in any part of Zion, just Elk and Mule Deer.
Love the Zebra photo and those cute little Hoopoes. We are enjoying the quail running around on the desert bank behind our new house. I love the sound they make.
#8325
Thanks. As the photos get more recent I think they improve in quality. I’ve seen sheep on the east side of Zion several times. I too like to hear the quail. #8325 for you.
Still unable to comment on the computer!! Great selection of photos no particular favourite but I have to say I am captivated by the slot canyons. 1904 for next week please. Happy weekend, Diane and Nigel
Thanks for your persistence. I could use a red rock fix soon. #1904 for you two.
How about that? It’s Friday and I remembered!
I’m wondering if the skinny canyon was claustrophobic at all?
Next week #710
This particular slot canyon never felt claustrophobic to me but I’ve seen some that might. #710 for you.
Yet again too many great shots. Love mine of the Wukoki Pueblo and the lions and the big horns and the zebras (great shot) any time anywhere. The Hoopoes are very unusual and interesting looking birds. The most striking picture this week is the clouds. What a gorgeous shot. Let me try 2750 for next week. We’ve had sustained winds today of 27 mph with gusts of over 50.
Thanks. I do like to photograph clouds. But I don’t like those high winds. Finally calmed down here after days of that. #2750 for you.
Feel like I won the jackpot with ‘my’ tree-framed canyon shot! It is a perfect picture. Wonderful crazy birds and how could you not fall in love with the mama and baby Zebra. What a great collection. (What about 6418 next time, just a coming date where I just entered something on the calendar).
Thanks. A favorite view of the canyon near the Lodge area. #6418 for you.
My favorites were the 1st photo, the Drakensburg mountains and the zebras.
Next week: #997
Thanks Donna. #997 for you.
You know the zebra pic is my favorite. Seeing the animals of Africa in their natural setting rather than an enclose would be wonderful.
I love the birds that you had for me. One of my instagram “friends” takes his “action camera” a Go Pro and puts it out on his bird feeder and gets some really great closeup photos and videos of both birds and squirrels. I thought of you. I am just letting you know that go pro clones, like mine, sell for 1/6th the price of go pros, in case you are interested but wonder about your budget. Just saying.
Have a great weekend!!
Oh yeah, my sister is going to work as a National Park Service seasonal employee this summer at Yellowstone Park working the the west entrance. She is all excited about not working for a concessinaire this year.
I can only dream about another camera as nothing is in my current budget. Congrats to your sis for getting onboard the NPS. Have you down for #5573.
And 5573 for next week from random dot org.
I agree with you the zebras this week, but my South Africa is ok too. Next week I’d like 865, the number of days NASA had to delay the Mars InSight launch. It is now scheduled for a May 5th launch from Vendenberg.
I think that zebra shot is destined for the photography website. Part of the fun going through these memories is discovering some real keepers missed before. #865 for you.
