This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 10 images chosen by readers from my photo files including wildlife and some history that shouldn’t be repeated.
Diane and Nigel chose #1108. A foggy Oregon day along the Columbia River Gorge still allowed a slight view from Crown Point looking up river, including a barge, along the Historic Columbia River Highway.
Donna chose #667. This clay hand-print on the sandstone wall of Buckskin Gulch slot canyon looked too fresh to be from ancient native people.
Jim and Diana chose #821, “the date of the eclipse with preparations at a fever pitch in central Oregon!” I’ll be watching at 74% eclipse at a hopefully uncrowded Marble View overlook near the North Rim in Arizona. But here I was watching birds, long-billed curlews, in southern Texas while packing Mom for the move to Arizona in 2011.
Pam and John chose #1711. A little different kind of wildlife watching happened in Kruger National Park, South Africa, when these hyenas came walking towards us on the road.
Sallie and Bill chose #1. One of the oldest photos I have, my dad during the 1940s and WWII, a war against Nazism. I hope that no one has to fight against that again. I still have his Ike jacket.
Sherry and David chose #1127. From the same November 2014 trip to the Pacific North West as the first photo. Latourell Falls framed by fall colors in Guy W Talbot State Park along the Columbia River Highway, Oregon.
Patti and Abi chose #400. Those tiny dots are mule deer on one of the many meadows you drive through on Highway 67 to the North Rim Grand Canyon.
Yogi chose #4999. Looking into the inner canyon from the Hermit Road on the South Rim Grand Canyon. Do you see the Colorado River?
Jodee and Bill chose #2484. Not all zebras look alike. Each individual has different markings and then there’s Burchell’s and Mountain Zebras which are different too. Plus young ones like this often take a while to turn black.
Jeff chose #1862, “the year President Lincoln signed both the Homestead Act and the Emaciation Proclamation.” Originally built in 1862, the Alonzo Russell home, severely damaged by years of vandalism and weather, was restored in 2004. Don’t know if it was part of the Homestead Act, but it along with a few other buildings can be seen in historic Grafton with Zion National Park in the background.
My choice taken during last week’s Native American Heritage Days when the rain quit just in time for dancing activities and a rainbow gift blessed the festivities.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 9999 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Love our shot, mist always has a spooky side to it which interests me. The photo of your father is a great memory, what a good looking man he was. The last shot with the rainbow is also fantastic, rainbows are always very special and even more so with this amazing background. You are so lucky to see this view so very often. Have a good weekend and take care, Diane and Nigel
Oops forgot – 1908 for next week. I changed to the 19th as it is my birthday :-)) Diane
Thanks Diane. Glad I don’t have to shoot in fog all the time but it does lend a moody feel.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Oh, and you get #1908 next week.
Love the photo of your dad, Gaelyn. We should all aspire to be as brave as that generation. Let’s do 812 next week for the woman who was this past week.
Thanks. I don’t want anyone to loose life fighting for freedom. As a species we should learn from historical mistakes. #812 it is.
Enjoyed the photos, as usual. Thought I would try one more time to comment. I haven’t been successful in a long time
Thanks Sue for trying again. I don’t know why comments sometimes works and others doesn’t.
Love our photo this week. Awesome shot of the hyena approaching you!! That young zebra…how adorable:)
#8081
How I long to return to South Africa for more wildlife. You get #8081 next week.
Love my falls picture and the one of your dad. It’s very sad that my hometown was the site of such awful violence. It’s just a sweet little college town now all over the news. What would its most famous citizen Thomas Jefferson have to say about all of this and our current president? I also really like the cute little zebra and the wonderful rainbow over the canyon for Heritage Days. How perfect. I’d like #1229 for next week please.
Thanks Sherry. It is sad that any town should experience such hate and violence. Have you down for #1229.
All beautiful photos, but our favorite is that awesome rainbow above the canyon…I like my favorite year 1953 (my birth year)…for next weeks Foto Friday.
Thanks. Can’t go wrong with a rainbow. #1953 for you next week.
I learned a lot from this collection, besides loving all the beauty as usual! I didn’t know all that about Zebras. And I’ve never visited the Talbott State park — even though I imagine we’ve driven the Columbia Gorge a thousand times (not much exaggeration — we lived in Oregon, all of our parents in Eastern Washington — it was the only way to get there). Special thanks for the picture of your Dad and your words; that’s my hope as well of course — my father also fought in that war and I know exactly how sad he would be with the situation we have now here in our own country. Let’s choose 1940 for next week (my birth year as well as from your memory of your dad ). I liked seeing the hyenas just wandering down the road — and thinking of you having to wait to proceed until they passed by at their own sweet time. It’s their road!
So much beauty along the Gorge would make even many drives good. I am appalled at the current state of affairs and know my father would be also. #1940 for next week.
A nice collection this week. I love our pick of the meadow because who doesn’t love a good meadow?
Also, like the photo of your father and your thoughts as the country sadly swirls.
Next week, #410
Thanks Patti. I do love the meadows up on the Kaibab. Sure hope this #45 idiot doesn’t start another war. Have you down for #410.
I like the little zebra. And, Dad was a handsome fella.
Next week: #677
Thanks Donna. I always thought my Dad looked like Gene Kelley, who I had a crush on forever. #677 for you next week.
OMG – what a cute little zebra! I am still in awe of all you’ve seen in your travels. How fun to see the gorge from Crown Point filled with fog after our just standing there a couple days ago. Gorgeous shot of the old home near Zion – looking forward to seeing the area this fall.
I thought of the fact that you’d just visited the Gorge when that foggy pic popped up. It’s so fun to share places with other travelers like you.
I like the coincidence of a cabin built in 1862 is your photo #1862, but my favorite is your rainbow picture over ‘your’ canyon, simply a tranquil moment in the turmoil. I’d like #108 next week, the length of totality seconds in Idaho Falls.
OK, so the photo wasn’t #1862, but that’s what came up when I searched your number. I am allowed to tweak it a bit after all. Rainbows are a special gift all the time. So, next week you get #108.
