This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 10 images chosen by readers from my photo files including some oldies because I asked for low numbers. This is Geogypsy’s 2000th post. Thank you all for following along.
Jim and Diana chose #365, “as that’s the distance (in millions of miles) that Jupiter is from Earth at its closest. It is currently really bright in the evening sky.” And I’ve seen that brightness of Jupiter yet wonder if its volcanic moon looks anything like the amazing lava flow landscape at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument.
Diane and Nigel chose #1407. I’m glad to have seen Rainbow Bridge National Monument but have no desire to return to Lake Powell, a reservoir that never should have been created.
Jeff chose #12, “the number of mountain passes in your 2013 South Africa mountain pass blog [post].” No mountains to be found when I visited Freeport, Bahama in December 1974. In fact I never saw anything but the beach for several days because the place was way too expensive for a 20-year old.
Pam and John chose #7141. The upper Buckskin Gulch should look familiar to them. I love the curves and fins of red rock found along this trail where we may have discovered Ed Meirs secret.
Jodee and Bill chose #53. From my first season at Mount St Helens on the crater hike with scientists. What a spectacular place to start my Ranger career in 1992 watching life return day by day.
Patti and Abi chose #370. Durng the summer of 2007 I was the camphostess at Caves Creek campground in the Siskiyou National Forest while leading cave tours at Oregon Caves National Monument.
Sherry and David chose #7555. I’m hoping their video will load of elephants at a waterhole in Addo Elephant National Park South Africa. I could watch them play and interact forever.
Sallie and Bill chose #721. The Colorado River has taken many boats for a hard ride, fortunately not the ones I was on during my 2011 rafting adventure. Here we stopped to see one the boats left behind, the Ross Wheeler, and hear the story of why.
Donna chose #58. Although not a wild animal, this Nubian goat was in the petting area at the California Living Museum where I volunteered as an animal keeper in Bakersfield, California during the late 1980s. Most of the animals were injured or imprinted wildlife.
Yogi chose #2. I’m not sure when this photo was taken of my Grandma Bea’s cabin on Enterprise Lake, Elcho, Wisconsin. I spent many happy times swimming in the lake even though Grandma had to greet me with a salt shaker to remove the leaches when I came out of the water. I picked blueberries in the woods for pancakes. Made card houses during the rain with Grandma’s pinochle decks while listening to the plinks, plops, and drips of water in pans and bowls because the roof leaked. Many wonderful memories.
My choice a Colorado River view from Moran Point on the South Rim Grand Canyon National Park. So I’m way behind on sharing travels and life adventures. Went to the South Rim briefly last week. Honest, I’ll try to post soon.
Thank you for playing along with Foto Friday Fun which allows me to share these photographs and memories. Please join in next week by leaving a number between 1 and 2000 in your comment below.
Do you have a favorite this week?
Yet another set of amazing photos. I just envy you your ever changing views of the canyon, so beautiful. Hope that all is well there. N is in the wars at the moment, shoulder trouble, knee and continuing problem with bites since the spider bite in RSA. It has obviously left some infection that keeps returning but the GP here is at a loss! 207 for next week please. Diane and Nigel
Thank you Diane. Monsoon is a bringing on some exciting and changing looks at the canyon.
So sorry to hear Nigel is unwell. Give him a hug, and maybe some chicken soup for the soul.
Have you down for #207.
Awesome Gaelyn…2,000 posts, pretty amazing for sure and even more mind boggling is how many thousands of photos you use. We love that spot at Moran Point, just beautiful.
It’s hard to believe I made it to 2000, the number you’ll get next week.
Not sure what Jupiter looks like under all that atmosphere, but Mars has some amazing hiking! Seeing that we’ve been also pulling in great views of Saturn this summer in the telescope, lets go with 746, as that is how far (in millions of miles) it is to Earth at its closest approach.
I’ll have to take your word for the hiking on Mars. You get #746 for next week.
I loved the story about you Grandma Bea’s house except for the part about the leaches. You lived to tell the tale though.
I am going with 3 for next week.
Congrats on your 2000th post!!
Thank you Yogi. Grandma Bea’s was a special place to be and she taught me much. Like stay out of a lake with leaches. #3 for you next week.
Today’s photo certainly lead to some interesting stories. I can’t believe that the Ross Wheeler even floated. All that metal makes it look so heavy. Too bad people can’t just leave things be. Fun to stop along the river to hear a story. Yes, we did that Upper Buckskin Trail but never found Ed’s Secret even with Suzanne’s helpful hints. But it was still a nice day. Loved taking the boat trip out to hike to Rainbow Bridge. Such a beauty. Great video of the elephants. Such a wonderful creature. Salt and leaches…not for me! But you made memories that last a life time at Grandma Bea’s.
#3542
I’m surprised any of the early boats made it on the Colorado River. I want to return to Ed’s Secret and spend some quality time but will have to wait a few more months when it’s cooler. #3542 for you.
Aw,goats are so cute.
Next week: #637
#637 for you.
Love the picture of the 1974 you in the Bahamas. Couldn’t agree more with you about Lake Powell, never been there, will never go. I owe it to Ed Abbey. But that’s a lovely picture of the arch. What a fantastic cabin for wonderful childhood memories. Loved hearing about them – leaches – yuck! And that Colorado River picture is stunning. The perspective, the colors, just beautiful. But the video of the elephants is my very favorite. Can’t believe you saw something so cool live and in person and in the wild. It just doesn’t get better than that. I’ll take number 7 for next week. Don’t think I’ve ever taken a single digit.
Hard to believe I didn’t mind the leaches as a kid because I wouldn’t now. But Grandma’s was a special place. And so is South Africa, where I could watch the elephants forever. #7 for you next week.
👍👍👍👍👍
As always.
Nice to know you’re hanging around Ed.
oops…. forgot to put up next week’s number, It’s gotta be #2000 in honor of your blog.
We’ve been to the Oregon Caves, years (and years) ago. Such beautiful country in Oregon.
I think my favorite photo this week is your pick, the last one. There is something about the light and color that just speaks to me.
It didn’t bother you to have leeches on you while you played in the water?! Ugh…
#380 for next week, please.
Funny as a kid the leeches didn’t bother me but they would now. #380 for next week.
Dang, I almost missed this one!! What a great selection. Love our Mt St Helens dramatic shot. What an experience you must have had among all the devastation. Your aunt’s little cabin looks like a piece of heaven. I’m glad you have it in your collection :-))) #232 for next week please.
I’m so thankful that relatives took photos and shared them. All part of the memories. You get #232 next week.
Love all the memories …. you were so very young when you started your travel and life adventures… I ‘m more than a bit envious , (but I do love my middle-aged kids and their kids … who I guess wouldn’t be here if I’d taken a different path in my 20s! ). One of the most fun parts of blogging to me is learning about different ways we all live …and yet how we share a lot of similar values (as do the bloggers I keep on my ‘must never miss a post’ list.
Forgot to say on your latest post that I wish all 4th of July celebrations involved water instead of noise and fire.
Pretty much been a gypsy all my life. I too like to read and get to know people from all walks of life, similar and different to my own.
I really don’t miss the fireworks.
