This week’s Foto Friday Fun features 5 images chosen by readers from my photo archives. Our meme number for this week is 812. Please link in any day this week by digging into your archives and sharing a photo and story on your blog. Plus check out the other posts linked to the Foto Friday Fun meme.
Jodee chose #812 for her grandson’s birthday last week. He’s probably a nature boy like his grandma so ought to appreciate a Ground Hornbill, stands about 2 feet high and chases after bugs, lizards, snakes and small rodents. Saw these regularly when visiting Kruger National Park, South Africa in February 2013.
Diane chose #0037 and I know she’ll like to see this Lilac-breasted roller from Pilanesberg Game Reserve. Although not really a birder it’s delightful to see such a variety of almost exotic birds in South Africa.
Sherry chose #8405, a spectacular view across the landscape of Mountain Zebra National Park, South Africa. Been here twice now and love the combination of wildlife and scenery.
Shane chose #2989. Wonder if he’s ever seen a Warthog? They get kind of a bad rap for being ugly but are actually amusing to watch as they kneel on their front knees while grazing along and sometimes put on a show of vibrato snorting and swing their nasty looking teeth while challenging each other. This one, however, is lazily taking a nap at Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa.
Yogi chose #747, “just cuz.” And ‘just cuz’ he likes Grand Canyon I share the distant southeast view from the head of Crystal Creek drainage on the way to Point Sublime.
My choice this week from Wednesday’s hike into the Wave in Coyote Buttes North, Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness. It was a hot long hike over sand and slick rock and most certainly worth it.

Do you have a favorite from this week?
I’ve been so busy having fun that I’m way behind on posting plus the internet signal seems to be getting worse at the North Rim. Hope to catch up soon. So stay tuned for more exciting adventures.
OH yeahhhhhhhhh!!! The Ground Hornbill is one good looking bird….so is the Roller! Hope you have a great weekend! Hugs, Me:)
I figured you’d like these South African birds. I’m just teasing you, ya’ know.
I love lilac breasted rollers, they are so pretty. Wow the Wave in Coyote Buttes North is amazing, I have never seen anything quite like that. 0047for next week. Have a good weekend Diane
I too love the rollers brilliant colors. And have also never seen anything like Coyote Buttes North including the wave. Have you down for #0047.
Some really great photos.
Thanks Colleen.
Beautiful shots.
Thank you Patricia.
Oh the hornbill is awesome! Little Ezra’s nursery is all animals so he will fit in just perfectly with the bears and giraffe and penguins 🙂 He’s just nine days old now, so I’ll save this for him. Love the open spaces of the national park in Africa, what an amazing place to have spent so much time. There was a wonderful old building in Port Townsend, built in 1889, so I’ll have that for next week.
Sounds like the hornbill is perfect Ezra’s nursery room full of animals. I just love South Africa and even think of retiring there. Have you down for #1889.
Ha. The closest I’ve ever come to seeing a warthog in the wild is this feral pig crossing sign in Carmel ( http://thewildamericanwest.blogspot.com/2015/03/pig-crossing.html ). Not too close. 🙂
I’m looking forward to your post about hiking to The Wave. That’s someplace I’d really like to visit but I’m intimidated by the hike in (and out), especially after that couple wandered off the trail last year. I want to go back and spend a lot more time at that stretch between the North Rim and Monument Valley. Such an amazing landscape and we only got a glimpse of it on our road trip last month.
8505 for me this week.
Well they’re not quite feral pigs.
The Wave hike is a little more than 3 miles each way over sand and slick rock. Not really hard but in the heat was very tiring. So much to see along the AZ Strip and southern UT.
Have you down for #8505.
Beautiful photos all and I love especially the last one.
Hmmm, next week is 6060, cuz I’m 60 years old and repeat myself all the time.
Thanks Yogi. I’ve wanted to visit the Wave for a while.
Another year passes. Seems like I’ve known you since at least 50. Happy Birthday, for the next 59 days.
Have you down for #6060.
Wow! That last shot of the wave walls is beautiful!
Thanks Patti. The whole are is drop dead gorgeous!
That last photo is better than postcard perfect. Put some inspirational writing on it and let it go viral. I haven’t been participating in Foto Fridays lately cause I come around too late but this week I’ll throw in a number – 7654 thanks to random.com… Not really. Random dot I make it up
Thanks Jonker. Even without inspirational writing it went pretty far on FB. Glad to see you around again and have you down for #7654.
All so lovely; that wave hike — your choice — is my favorite for today (well for last Friday actually of course. I am pitifully behind time. My laptop was giving me so much trouble;; I tried to catch up on the IPad, but it is hard to type on.
Sorry to hear about your laptop problems. The Wave was awesome!! I’ll post about it soon.
I fell in love with the Lilac-breasted roller from Pilanesberg Game Reserve!! 8*)
I would love to see image number 906 please, it’s my birthday party this year! 8*)
That lilac-breasted guy is just the cutest!
